The Big Business Of Cancer: 100 BILLION Dollars Was Spent On Cancer Drugs Last Year Alone

Dollars - Public DomainIf you are an American, there is a 1 in 3 chance that you will get cancer during your lifetime.  If you are a man, the odds are closer to 1 in 2.  And almost everyone in America either knows someone who currently has cancer or who has already died from cancer.  But it wasn’t always this way.  Back in the 1940s, only one out of every sixteen Americans would develop cancer.  Something has happened that has caused the cancer rate in this nation to absolutely explode, and it is being projected that cancer will soon surpass heart disease and become the leading cause of death in the United States.  Overall, the World Health Organization says that approximately 14 million new cases of cancer are diagnosed around the globe each year, and the number of new cases is expected to increase by about 70 percent over the next 2 decades.  There are very few words in the English language that cause more fear than the word “cancer”, but despite billions spent on research and all of the technological progress we have made over the years this plague just continues to spiral wildly out of control.  Why is that?

In America today, more money is spent to treat cancer than to treat any other disease by far.  In fact, according to NBC News, 100 BILLION dollars was spent on cancer drugs just last year alone…

As drug prices continue to fall under ever-increasing scrutiny, spending on cancer medicines has hit a new milestone: $100 billion in 2014.

That’s up more than 10 percent from 2013, and up from $75 billion five years earlier, according to a report published Tuesday from the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics.

100 million dollars would be an astounding amount of money to spend on these drugs.  But 100 billion dollars is 1,000 times as much money as 100 million dollars.  And the IMS Institute for Healthcare Informatics is projecting that the amount of money spent on cancer drugs will continue to grow at a rate of 6 to 8 percent a year.

Needless to say, there are a lot of people out there that are becoming exceedingly wealthy treating this disease.

And the cost of some these drugs is absolutely absurd.  According to NBC News, two of the latest cancer drugs to be developed “are priced at $12,500 a month“…

Forty-five new drugs for cancer hit the market between 2010 and 2014, including 10 last year alone, IMS said. Two of those are so-called immunotherapies, a hot new class that harnesses the immune system to fight cancer. They are Opdivo from Bristol-Myers Squibb and Keytruda from Merck. Both are priced at $12,500 a month.

Yes, I understand that drug companies are in business to make a profit.

But how can anyone possibly justify charging cancer patients that much for their medicine?

If you are diagnosed with cancer in America today and you choose to trust the medical system with your treatment, you can say goodbye to your financial future.  Even if you have health insurance, you will probably end up flat broke one way or the other.  Either you will survive and be flat broke, or you will die flat broke.

And despite all of our ultra-expensive treatments, the survival rate for cancer is still not very good.  At this point, the five year survival rate for those diagnosed with cancer is just 65 percent.  That means that 35 percent of those diagnosed with cancer are going to end up dead within five years, and for certain forms of cancer that percentage is much, much higher.

Sadly, as I mentioned at the top of this article, the percentage of the population getting cancer just continues to go up

We have lost the war on cancer. At the beginning of the last century, one person in twenty would get cancer. In the 1940s it was one out of every sixteen people. In the 1970s it was one person out of ten. Today one person out of three gets cancer in the course of their life.

We live in a society that is highly toxic, and it is getting worse with each passing day.

And once you do develop cancer, doctors are not allowed to prescribe any “alternative treatments” for you.  They are only permitted to offer you the treatments that the system tells them that they must offer.

One of these is chemotherapy.  It is an absolutely nightmarish treatment that often kills the patient before it kills the cancer.  The following is how one woman described her experience with chemo

This highly toxic fluid was being injected into my veins. The nurse administering it was wearing protective gloves because it would burn her skin if just a tiny drip came into contact with it. I couldn’t help asking myself “If such precautions are needed to be taken on the outside, what is it doing to me on the inside?” From 7 pm that evening, I vomited solidly for two and a half days. During my treatment, I lost my hair by the handful, I lost my appetite, my skin colour, my zest for life. I was death on legs.

Many patients go through round after hellish round, hoping that it will do something about their cancer.  Have you ever known someone who has gone through this ordeal?  It can be absolutely heartbreaking.

But in the end, there is a tremendous amount of doubt regarding whether chemo does much good at all.  Just consider the words of Dr. Ralph Moss, the author of a book entitled “The Cancer Industry“…

In the end, there is no proof that chemotherapy actually extends life in the vast majority of cases, and this is the great lie about chemotherapy, that somehow there is a correlation between shrinking a tumour and extending the life of a patient.

So why do oncologists push chemo so hard?

Well, it is because they make a tremendous amount of money doing it

According to the research of Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner of Freakonomics fame, “Oncologists are some of the highest paid doctors, their average income is increasing faster than any other specialist  in the medical field, and more than half their income comes from selling and administering chemotherapy.”

Yes you read that right.  Oncologists make a huge profit, as much as two-thirds of their income in some cases, from chemotherapy drugs.

Their business model is very different from other doctors because you can’t buy chemotherapy drugs at your local pharmacy.

Oncologists buy these drugs direct at wholesale prices, then they mark them up and bill the insurance companies. This legal profiting on drugs by doctors is unique to the cancer treatment world. They’re making money off the drugs that they insist you take to save your life. That’s a HUGE conflict of interest. They’re selling you the drugs, and charging you for the privilege of putting them in your body. No other doctor can do that.

Our system is deeply corrupt and deeply broken.

But nothing is going to change any time soon because hundreds of billions of dollars are being made.

So what do you think?  Do you have an experience with the cancer industry that you would like to share?  Please feel free to add to the discussion by posting a comment below…

There was a governor of Georgia, Lester Maddox, who was an avowed segregationist. Lester was asked about the sorry state of prisons in GA. His response was, “if you want better prisons, get better inmates”. In other words, rotten people make things rotten wherever they are. We need better citizens and leaders. Our culture is dog eat dog. There is no level playing field and there has never been one despite the “good old days” myths. Corruption has always been with us. Corporations have never cared for the “little guy”. Don’t expect it ever. They care for the bottom line and for the salaries of their boards and their CEO and slew of VPs. They do not care about the nation. Study your history of WW II and you will find greed, corruption and graft in great abundance among companies and corporations as industry was gearing up to provide for the war effort—for profit. There was never any altruistic motivations despite all the Hollywood propaganda films and rah rah patriotic nonsense. People expect someone else to care and to be fair and just. Ain’t so, ain’t happening. Blacks have known that for several centuries. Poor whites have known it (personal experience) and now middle class white folks are experiencing betrayal, greed and guess what, they don’t like it but are helpless. Stop believing all these myths about the good old days that never were and never will be. Some will make it, most will not. The drug industry, medical industry, insurance industry, banking industry et al have only profits in mind which is the capitalist way and which has been embraced by most white folks–until now. Now my ox is being gored and I’m angry. Guess what, no one cares. If I lose my house, my job, it is on me. It is like coming up on a terrible accident. We think to ourselves, “thankfully that isn’t me” and drive on. Thirty minutes later we are eating a burger and wondering if our NFL team will win this week.
The only candidate so far who speaks the truth is Bernie Sanders running as a socialist. But people who read this excellent blog will hate him because he is, gasp, a socialist. We cannot have it both ways. In fact, I do not believe we will have anything by the time we have been fleeced by banks, government and industry.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery – Winston Churchill

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other peoples’ money. – Margaret Thatcher

unfortunately, most people get capitalism confused with crony capitalism. The latter is what we have today, and have had for a very long time.

  • K

I had to watch my Mother slowly die from cancer. What I got from that, was no checkups, and in general no doctors for me. Yes if I have an accident, I will let a doctor stitch me up. But that is all I use them for. I have not had a checkup, nor have I seen a doctor for any other reason, in 14 years. When it is my time, it is my time.

    • Robert

Much depends on the type of cancer. If surgery is an option then I will take the cutting but not chemo and radiation. Easy to say now but I hope to stick with what I think right now. Some cancers are curable if found early. Some are hopeless from the start.

    • babygirlway

Eerily, I could have written your post myself. The only difference is the time frame. 10 years for me.

      • MichaelfromTheEconomicCollapse

Watching a relative die from cancer has turned a lot of people off from the medical system. Thank you for sharing that with us K.

Watched the evening news one “World News Now” abc with anchor Peter Jennings. At one point he coughs. They go to commercial. Upon returning he apologizes for the interruption. Days later he announces he has lung cancer. Within six months he was dead. Shame we didn’t get to follow his “treatment progress” along the way.

  • Marijuana & turmeric (non-irradiated) are excellent cures for cancer. Marijuana also cures Lyme disease & treats epilepsy.

The problem is doctors for profit medicine and lawyers for profit legal systems. The two together are a deadly combination.
Basically we put the fox in charge of the hen house.
The federal agency in charge of this mess is the Federal Drug Administration. Just like in a poker game, you have to put a certain sum of money on the table before anyone even considers you a part of the game. Anyone not part of the game is shut down.
The “annie up” for medicine is in the millions of dollars per drug.
So any so called “cure” for cancer has to go through the FDA to be considered a treatment. We have many drugs on the market and I am no chemist. We have things that have not been “approved” to treat disease even though those drugs are effective in treatment. Why? The “annie” in this poker game is way too high to adjust rapidly to what a doctor needs to treat cancer effectively. Or any other disease.
The doctor is caught in the middle.

If this so called bureau had been in business in the 1900s or sooner then we would still be bleeding patients with leeches as the only effective treatment fro cancer. And spending billions on it besides.
And it would be the only legal way to treat cancer.
The lawyers in our system gleefully entered the game and wrote up rules so no one could interfere with treating cancer with multi-million dollar treatments. Even though one polish doctor found a much better treatment for certain kinds of cancer. He has been attacked by the FDA. They are tying him up with multiple lawsuits and threats to remove his license to practice medicine here. He has gone out of country to cure cancer!
The drug companies are part of the game. Part of the legal mess. Because it pays them big time to protect the way we do things over an effective cure for anything.
It is called the Cash Cow Business. It extends not only to cancer but to all forms of diabetes treatment. It is a multi-billion dollar business.
I think it resembles the Mafia in its outreach. I would not be surprised to pick up a paper someday and read all about a hit being put on someone that cured cancer.

    • I think I have seen stories of police raiding people who cure cancer. Also, on sites like medicalkidnap there’s articles about children / teens being kidnapped when they or the parents refuse chemotherapy.

The government even visited people for making ebola treatment claims.

  • donna

very definition of insanity. I have been actively involved in the care and support of more than a dozen people through this disease. I know my way around every hospital in NYC and some in NJ and have seen in addition hundreds more similarly situated. Years ago at Sloane kettering patients were generally old. no more. How the medical profession can sit smugly by and watch the catastrophic increase in cases and deterioration in morbidity continue recommending these treatments defies both decency and sanity.

    • MichaelfromTheEconomicCollapse

      Very well said Donna.

While I’m sure there are ethical doctors out there, I have met and been treated by doctors that just cared about me showing up for my appointments and new prescriptions. That’s the ticket, let’s try this drug and see if it works. It’s quite frustrating until you meet a doctor that finally cares about your condition. “There’s no money to be made from healthy people.”

    • MichaelfromTheEconomicCollapse

Indeed – our medical system is a giant money making racket.

Why more moderation? Just because of a name this time since i didn’t say anything bad (so i changed it). I’m tired of commenting but I originally just thought to paste the Beetles quote since it fit the article. In a few days i’ll be getting disqus for my own website so I can learn it’s moderation: ip address (yes), email (yes), username???, account (yes), literacy comparison program???, browser configuration matching???, operating system details???

I took programming in college so i know how software checks work; computers are my job.

sorry for commenting just delete this

I actually take Turmeric regularly myself. It has a whole host of benefits.

      • Kim

Make sure u take it with a bit of fat (coconut oil or coconut milk) or take it with some black pepper– maybe in a smoothie. It increases the bio-availability several fold! :)))).

Did u read that consuming turmeric in this way is as effective in neutralizing cancer cells as some chemotherapy drugs?

“despite billions spent on research and all of the technological progress we have made over the years this plague just continues to spiral wildly out of control. Why is that?”

Monsanto’s GMO foods = death on a plate

What does the Bible say about God after He created our food? “… and God saw that it was GOOD.” Genesis 1:12

What does Monsanto have to say about that? I imagine something like this: ‘good huh? Well God, you did OK… unfortunately, we need to tweek the genetic structure of the food you designed just a little bit. We’re sorry, but we just don’t think you got it quite right.’

I believe Monsanto’s tampering with the genetic makeup of our food- from a Christian perspective- is a form of blasphemy- and even if I believed in evolution (and I don’t) I would still think it’s madness to tamper with the natural order of things.

    • MichaelfromTheEconomicCollapse

Without a doubt, Monsanto is one of the most evil corporations in existence today.

The oleocanthal in extra-virgin olive oil kills cancer cells in 30 to 60 minutes. Colavita brand, made exclusively from olives grown in Italy, has a comparatively high oleocanthal content. Oleocanthal, the “stinging aldehyde from olives”, will cause a stinging sensation in the back of your throat when you swallow it. And it may make you cough several times.

This is the basic SCIENCE of the medicinal value of CANNABIS OIL [the ESSENTIAL OIL] as it relates to cancer: The CANNABINOIDs [the main constituents in cannabis, e.g. THC and CBD] are the counterparts to the ENDOCANNABINOIDs [just like morphine is the counterpart to our endorphins] produced naturally in our bodies [such as ANANDOMIDE]. When these cannabinoids link up with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in our body’s ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM, a substance called CERAMIDE is released. It is the CERAMIDE that seeks out cancerous cells, destroys the mitochondria [the energy-producing organelles], and thus kills the malignant cells, while leaving healthy cells intact. There has been plenty of research on the relationship between CANNABINOIDs and CANCER. These studies show that not only do CANNABINOIDS inhibit tumor growth, but also that they INDUCE CELL APOPTOSIS [programmed cell death]. This is a fact that even the US GOV’T admits on their own website cancerDOTgov [linked below]. Furthermore, Dr. Manuel Guzman [Complutense U. of Madrid] conducted a landmark study that showed: “Cannabinoids are selective antitumour compounds, as they can KILL TUMOUR CELLS without affecting their non-transformed counterparts.” Also, research shows that CANNABINOIDs PROTECT the brain against neurodegeneration. We all know how SMOKING cannabis is therapeutic in certain ways, but the HIDDEN SECRET [thanks to RICK SIMPSON and his film: “RUN FROM THE CURE.”] is that the REAL MEDICINE is in extracting the ESSENTIAL OIL [this is NOT the seed oil found in health stores] and using it topically on skin cancer, burns, rashes,… or ingesting it for internal cancers and other ailments. Check out the links to the scientific research. Also, check out the clip of the PBS special “Clearing the Smoke.” In it, Dr. Donald Abrams [professor at UCSF & oncologist at SF Gen. Hosptital] & Dr. Prakash Nagarkatti [U. of South Carolina] explain the human body’s ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM and a study that shows that CANNABINOIDs KILL CANCER CELLS in test tubes and in mice. Lastly, DENNIS HILL [biochemist, formerly of MD Anderson Cancer Center-Houston–one of the top-ranked cancer facilities in the world] most eloquently explains for the layperson how CANNABINOIDS KILL CANCER CELLS, and how he cured his STAGE 4 prostate cancer in 6 months, without chemo or radiation therapy.

Cannabinoids can be used to treat cancer:

“…Here, we report that cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabinoid with a low-toxicity profile, could down-regulate Id-1 expression in aggressive human breast cancer cells. The CBD concentrations effective at inhibiting Id-1 expression correlated with those used to inhibit the proliferative and invasive phenotype of breast cancer cells”

I was diagnosed w/ two separate, primary cancers in September 2014. I immediately started on medical cannabis, natural supplements, organic fruits and vegetables, etc., and cut out all processed foods and sugar. I focused on nutrition, detoxing, exercise, faith, de-stressing. My thought was, “You medical doctors have surgery, chemo, and radiation, but if I don’t get a handle on my systemic problem, it’s all just going to come back . . . ” Eight months later, I’m still doing great! My thyroid doctor (one of the cancers is metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma) is not sure what to make of it all, because “nothing is growing and cancer grows.” I still have a way to go, but I am confident I am on the right track. No chemo, no radiation. I am relying on my body’s God-given ability to heal itself through proper, natural modalities. It has not been easy, but I have no regrets.

Has anyone heard of ‘antineoplaston’ cancer therapy? Well, the highly effective protocol has been used to arrest and even reverse the results of different cancers- some even considered terminal. He has had to fight the FDA & American Cancer Institute, primarily because of what this current article reveals.

Why has this been suppressed and criminally prosecuted multiple times?
For comprehensive data including videos and testimonials, please do study the historic and current work of Dr. Stanislav Burzynski: Our nation is in the hands of those seeking to do us all harm!

Cell phone and other forms of power emissions and radio waves are taking their toll. Radiation from Fukushima is also falling on us. Our food, due to GMOs and soil depletion is also not as healthy as it once was. Throw in that many people have parasites who are depriving them of nutrients and it’s a recipe for disaster.

  • piccadillybabe

After all that has been revealed about pharmaceuticals and how harmful they are and people are still buying into it, I guess you might say they deserve to suffer. Cancer is a chronic disease and to impede what little immune system you have left with horrible drugs is just plain stupid. There are alternative therapies but doctors working in clinics and hospitals are not allowed to prescribe them. They are bound, gagged and tied to therapies which carry high profit margins but no benefit to their patients. How can you trust the medical community to do the right thing? You can’t!

    Well said Bill.

My father died a slow, painful death from colon cancer. He basically just wasted away. He also did chemo treatments. I am a firm believer that most cancers are caused by all the toxic foods out there. If you can’t pronounce the ingredient on the food label, then how can it possibly be good for you? I also think it would be wonderful if a cure for cancer would be found. If that were the case, the American Cancer Society and all the pharmaceutical companies and oncologists would be out of business. I don’t see that happening any time soon, too much money to be made.

  • Bustr

The reason there is more cancer is that, compared to the early 20th century, people aren’t dying early from infectious diseases. Antibiotics and vaccinations prevent people from an early death so they live longer and get cancer and cardiovascular disease, instead. Nobody gets out of here alive.

  • bluesuede

Up to the 1950’s, TB had been a common and feared disease and treated with clinics and doctors and medicines everywhere.
    Then came the cure.
The clinics, doctors, medicine and everything dried up.
    Cancer is very profitable.

Why don’t we hear about cures anymore?

  • OldUncleDave

“Back in the 1940s, only one out of every sixteen
    Americans would develop cancer.”

Then came the nuclear age, with massive amounts of radioactive particles released into the atmosphere from hundreds of bomb tests. Coincidentally, that’s when the gov’t started the campaign to blame cigarettes for lung cancer. But even as smoking rates have declined, lung cancer rates have increased. You can quit smoking, but you can’t quit breathing the air.

I was my mother’s caregiver from January 2012 up until her death from cancer August 2013. She had tumors in her right lung and was given 3 months. I took her to one of the best cancer treatment facilities in the US. She was retired and had her Medicare and excellent insurance and that is why at 74 years of age they treated her. Every time she sat in the chemotherapy chair it was $32,000 and that did not include the costs for all the proton therapy she received. She and her body could not handle the chemo treatments, it lower her white/red blood cells and made havoc on her immune system. After she had passed and I was presented with the final billings, so in the time frame of 1 year 7 months of her treatments her insurance had paid a total of 2.5Million for cancer treatment. In the end the cancer had traveled to her left lung, liver, pancreas and brain. She had remained very optimistic but she knew in her heart that her time was short on this earth and had excepted the outcome of death and made peace with God. There was a drug that she had to take daily and for a 20 day supply it was $8,000. I had donated the unopened medicine to the cancer center to donate to others that could not afford that particular medicine. Cancer is a big money industry, no doubt.

This is because people are tired of the scamming companies with
holding the cures to keep treating the symptoms to rake in trillions at
the expense of our health.–People are finally waking up and
realizing there are real cures that work out there that are natural with
no side effects that the FDA, US Government and these companies do now
want people to know about and are turning to these proven and effective cures.

  • Frank K Ani

My wife diagnosed with so-called Stage 4 terminal cancer. I started researching because I had read so were a few years ago that cancer is curable.

I finally found what I was looking for. Dr. Otto Heinrich Warburg, who had a doctorate of chemistry, and a second doctorate in medicine, he was a physiologist and noted biochemist born in 1883 in Freiburg, Baden, Germany. Dr. Warburg won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1931 “The Prime Cause, Cure and Prevention of Cancer!” Yes you read that right.

I am not talking about “survival rate” that current Doctors push when you ask them how man people they have cured.

His research and findings have never been disputed but the AMA and Big Pharma have hidden and buried his research and findings as deep as they could.

The reason is that the cure for cancer requires no drugs and is relatively simple and once you are cured and realize how easy the prevention is you will have no need for their services.

The sad part of my story is the doctors and her family have her convinced that chemo is the only way to go. Our two daughters, her nephew, and I have tried to get her to give it a try but she is afraid.

  • Frank K Ani

Cannabis oil will stop the growth but along with that you need to bring your body pH to 7.36 based on Dr. Warburg’s Noble prize winning research cancer can NO longer grow in your body.
