Scandal: Obama Caught Spying On Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu And Members Of Congress

Spying - Photo by Pascal KirchmairIf you found out that one of your “friends” was secretly peeking in your windows at you and your family throughout the day, would that person continue to be your friend? Of course not. But that is exactly what Barack Obama has been doing to Israel. According to the Wall Street Journal, during Obama’s first term the decision was made to monitor the communications of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders. This represents an astounding betrayal of our closest ally in the Middle East, but the scandal doesn’t end there. In the process of monitoring Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders, the NSA also collected private conversations that they had with members of the U.S. Congress. So that means that Obama and the NSA were spying on Congress, which is a very serious violation of the law.

This wasn’t supposed to happen. Two years ago, Obama promised that he was going to quit spying on the leaders of other nations that we are allied with.

But just like most of Obama’s other promises, this one proved to be hollow as well. The following comes from the Wall Street Journal

President Barack Obama announced two years ago he would curtail eavesdropping on friendly heads of state after the world learned the reach of long-secret U.S. surveillance programs.

But behind the scenes, the White House decided to keep certain allies under close watch, current and former U.S. officials said. Topping the list was Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

So when did all of this spying on Israeli officials originally start happening?

Apparently, the surveillance of Netanyahu began “late in Obama’s first term in office”

The NSA began keeping tabs on the Israeli Prime Minister late in Obama’s first term in office. The surveillance was driven by fears that Israel was planning an attack on Iran.

The agency carried on with its spying operations, and discovered that Netanyahu had leaked details of the Iran negotiations – which could have jeopardized the deal – and had coordinated talks with American Jewish groups. He also asked undecided U.S.lawmakers what it would take to win their vote.

This scandal should be front page news all over the country, but this story is already starting to fade from the headlines.

The way that we are acting is absolutely disgraceful. The “good guys” do not spy on their friends. Personally, I can’t understand why the American people are not steaming mad about this.

No wonder the rest of the world is turning on us. We go around doing whatever we want and abusing our “friends”, and then we still expect everyone to love us.

Are we insane?

According to the Wall Street Journal, the NSA has “spent decades” building up the infrastructure to spy on other global leaders. Over the past couple of years spying on some allied leaders has stopped, but apparently that was never even a consideration when it came to Israel…

The NSA had, in some cases, spent decades placing electronic implants in networks around the world to collect phone calls, text messages and emails. Removing them or turning them off in the wake of the Snowden revelations would make it difficult, if not impossible, to re-establish access in the future, U.S. intelligence officials warned the White House.

Instead of removing the implants, Mr. Obama decided to shut off the NSA’s monitoring of phone numbers and email addresses of certain allied leaders—a move that could be reversed by the president or his successor.

There was little debate over Israel. “Going dark on Bibi? Of course we wouldn’t do that,” a senior U.S. official said, using Mr. Netanyahu’s nickname.

This is yet again another scandal which could bring down the Obama presidency. Of course the Republicans have never shown any willingness to stand up to Obama, but if they ever somehow did find enough courage to do so, they would certainly have all the ammunition that they would need. Because in the process of monitoring Israeli leaders, the NSA was also spying on the private conversations of members of Congress

The National Security Agency’s targeting of Israeli leaders and officials also swept up the contents of some of their private conversations with U.S. lawmakers and American-Jewish groups. That raised fears—an “Oh-s— moment,” one senior U.S. official said—that the executive branch would be accused of spying on Congress.

Many prominent voices are already using the phrase “abuse of power” in connection with this scandal. Just consider the words of former U.S. Representative Pete Hoekstra

Former Michigan Rep. Pete Hoekstra, who chaired the House intelligence panel from 2004 to 2007, called for a probe late Tuesday, remarking that the Obama administration had exhibited an “unprecedented abuse of power” if the allegations are true.

“WSJ report that [National Security Agency] spied on Congress and Israel communications very disturbing. Actually outrageous,” he tweeted. “Maybe unprecedented abuse of power.”

“NSA and Obama officials need to be investigated and prosecuted if any truth to WSJ reports,” he continued. “NSA loses all credibility. Scary.”

And Politico is reporting that the House Intelligence Committee is already looking into these allegations…

“The House Intelligence Committee is looking into allegations in the Wall Street Journal regarding possible Intelligence Community (IC) collection of communications between Israeli government officials and members of Congress,” Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) said in a statement. “The Committee has requested additional information from the IC to determine which, if any, of these allegations are true, and whether the IC followed all applicable laws, rules, and procedures.”

Regardless of what happens in Congress (which probably won’t be much), the big story is what this will do to our already damaged relationship with Israel.

By systematically conducting surveillance on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders, the Obama administration has shattered what little trust remained between the two governments.

During his first seven years in the White House, Obama has already proven to be the most anti-Israel president in modern times. Everyone already knew that he greatly disliked Netanyahu and that he even sent many of his top campaign officials over to Israel to try to help defeat Bibi during the last election.

But this scandal takes things to an entirely different level.

Barack Obama has greatly betrayed Israel, and he isn’t even sorry for doing it.

So how will the American people respond?

Will they express great outrage and demand Obama’s resignation?

Probably not.

In fact, this story will probably almost be entirely forgotten once the current 48 hour news cycle is over.

We have a population that is so far gone that they don’t even understand that spying on our allies is very, very wrong.

It isn’t just Obama – our entire nation is becoming a little bit more like Nazi Germany every single day, and hardly anyone even seems upset about the transition.

So is there any hope for us?

Please feel free to tell us what you think by posting a comment below…

  • K

Michael I am sorry to say it. But I doubt most American citizens, will remember this story 48 seconds after they hear it. So you can forget the 48 hour idea.

  • Imaplaneiac

So how will the American people respond?

Will they express great outrage and demand Obama’s resignation?

    Probably not.

I think that most readers of the blog will agree that CON-gress, LONG AGO, should have removed this lunatic from his throne; for his CRIMES against us; for his treason; for his perjury. So, did these oligarchs do ANYTHING to accomplish this for us; who they allegedly ” serve “?! So, what can we conclude about their NEGLIGENCE?!

  • VigilanteCaregiver

Congress won’t act. They enjoy the corruption too much. Israel will act on this; just don’t know how.

Here’s my problem with government spying. Every year, 6 months, or quarterly (depends on the agency) I have to submit a bible’s length of documents for the wife’s legally-mandated disability programs. This is time consuming and costs a lot in printer paper. The thickest stack was around 7 inches tall. Very annoying.

If they’re spying on us, then why bother with the paperwork requests!? They have a play-by-play record of everything I do, every transaction, every note and email: why do they need so much paperwork!? It’s like they don’t care about their precious environment! /sarc/

Allies do spy on each other. But the U.S. handed down an extremely harsh sentence to Jonathan Pollard, just served 30 years in prison for passing classified information:not to an enemy, but to our ally Israel. It seems kind of hypocritical to me: Friendly nations engage in mutual espionage, and it’s business as usual. But the US brought the hammer down on one of its citizens for playing their old game as if he were the most despicable of traitors.

    • iris

Agree, and it’s pretty naive to think it hasn’t always been so, in pretty much every country for thousands of years. Any leader who cares about their people’s security would do no less.

What concerns me is the spying on Congress and law abiding citizens.

  • GetReal4U2

God is very clear on how he views people who treat Israel badly…

    • Yeah, right!

      6 millions disagrees with you.

    • MaxRockatansky33

God has nothing to do with politics.

    • algol2000

Israel is a creation of the cabalist central bankers who hijacked the identity of the jews. It has nothing to do with God.

      • Sortinghat

I plan to go to hell then serve corrupt Israel if worse comes to worst at lest I and many others will get special protection which makes the devil the good guy who stood up to corporation monsters.

        . I won’t bow down to a monster

  • Tallkiwi

If you think the Republicans would have done anything differently you are sorely mistaken. Since the majority of both houses seems to be for the spying on Israel and the fact that Israel can be a loose canon PLUS the fact that I imagine it’s hard to just listen to ONE side of a conversation I’d say you’re over reacting and THATS why the story is dying….that is quite a bit different than purposely spying on Congress per se.

just like your beloved Bush, hypocrite.

No, Bush was a dimwit..Obama is evil. Either way, hohum, another Obama administration scandal, which begs the question: If nobody ever attempts to charge or stop abject corruption and destructive disregard for the constitution, is it even truly illegal? It appears we live in a land with 1,000’s of laws for the masses and free reign for the overlords.

        • Gay Veteran

great evil was done in the Bush years, just like now.

          and I fixed your sentence:
We live in a land with 1,000’s of laws for the masses and free reign for the overlords.

  • Gay Veteran

“…while Jonathan J. Pollard, one of the most notorious spies of the late Cold War, tried to stay out of sight after emerging from custody almost as if from a time machine, the United States and Israel hoped his release would finally heal a long-festering open wound in their partnership.

For 30 years, Mr. Pollard was at the center of a profound struggle between Washington and Jerusalem, one that shadowed American presidents and Israeli prime ministers since Ronald Reagan was in the White House. The Americans called him a traitor. The Israelis deemed him a soldier, to some a hero. At times, both made him a diplomatic bargaining chip.

The only American ever sentenced to life in prison for spying for an ally, Mr. Pollard was freed on parole to an uncertain future….”

    • Robinanna neibauer

Not every American, I actually want the guy to go to Israel! He isn’t a traitor, if Michael Swartz isn’t a traitor then Pollard definitely isn’t!

  • Gay Veteran

“…The NSA began keeping tabs on the Israeli Prime Minister late in Obama’s first term in office. The surveillance was driven by fears that Israel was planning an attack on Iran.

The SCANDAL here is a FOREIGNER trying to influence OUR congressmen.
The SCANDAL here is a psychopathic neo-con (BOTH Netanyahu and Obama)

  • Gay Veteran

“…During his first seven years in the White House, Obama has already proven to be the most anti-Israel president in modern times….”

and yet he continues to send BILLIONS of OUR tax dollars to that warmongering neo-con psychopath Netanyahu!

you want to support Israel? send YOUR money, send YOUR kids to fight for them, MOVE THERE, but leave the rest of us out of your psycho trip

    • afchief

      It is that simple!!!!

      • Gay Veteran

OR we should send all the billions we use for mental retardation research!!!!
unfortunately for you there is NO cure

        • Sortinghat

Now there’s a lot of money being wasted with no foresight.

  • Stan

When do the impeachment hearings begin?

If the turd POTUS is willing to spy on Congress just to eaves drop on Bebe, then certainly he is willing to spy on Republican leadership and the US Supreme Court members……

Kind of answers a lot of questions, doesn’t it…….

  • AzDi

Anyone who listened to Obama in the very beginning, and listened to people like Glen Beck who seems to be the only one who was telling the truth, would not be surprised about anything about obama. He is a crook, he is corruption plus 10, he “appears” to hate Americans and is a closet Muslim. Remember, Vallerie Jarret is Obama’s number one and she is from Iran. Everyone around Obama is liberal and supporters of Iran.

HOW people ever voted this guy in twice is beyond any understanding. But idiot liberals believed the “now dictator” instead of checking him and his history. Now look where we are…. very close to WWIII.

    • Valdemar II

What if there was a military confrontation with Iran, what would happen to Obama administration?

      • AzDi

Obama most likely will support them over Americans!

    • Gay Veteran

“…HOW people ever voted this guy in twice is beyond any understanding….”

why not, they voted in Bush twice

      • AzDi

I certainly don’t think Bush was as corrupt, or narcissistic or a dictator like Obama!! At least Bush didn’t sit back and let Al Quada go berserk like Obama has done with ISIS.

At least Bush was not making nice with Iran and all of our enemies. At least Bush believed in Americans rather than Obama giving jobs to outsiders instead of us. I could go on and on.

And by the way…. NO republican voted for Obama period!

        • Gay Veteran

ISIS is our creation, used to overthrow the Assad government in Syria.

“…At least Bush was not making nice with Iran and all of our enemies….”

no, Bush just got us into a war of aggression against Iraq.

and Iran is not our enemy.

“…At least Bush believed in Americans rather than Obama giving jobs to outsiders instead of us….”

not sure what you mean, BOTH favor shipping American jobs overseas.

“…And by the way…. NO republican voted for Obama period!”

          so what? republican = democrat

            What Reagan Signed

“The UN Convention on Torture, which Ronald Reagan signed and championed, is very clear and its definition of what torture is obviously broad and inclusive. There’s actually a good discussion of it at Hot Air, which reproduces the legal definition thus:

            Article 1.
            1. For the purposes of this Convention, torture means any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in or incidental to lawful sanctions…..”

          • afchief

Sorry Mr Packs the Fudge, but the CIA had as one of it’s SOPs that waterboarding was allowed.

oh, did they get that from a Na-zi lawyer?

You are correct in your assumption that nothing will happen about the spying.
With less than a year to go President Obama has little to fear.
The cost of impeaching him just isn’t worth it.
Of more concern is the Democrat candidates up for election to become our next President. Will it be Hillary Clinton? Will it be Bill Clinton in as Vice President? I believe the language key here is “consecutive” meaning that Bill could actually end up as President if anything happened to his wife. Or is this a chess move?
In chess one hides bishops behind knights and pawns. When the knights and pawns move the bishops are free to attack.
Sometimes even more pieces are hidden in this way.
My point being that Mrs. Clinton may have no intention of running at all. She may be the piece in front of a more powerful piece that runs in her place if she is unable to.
Mr. Sanders would be that piece and he is socialist.
IN the other camp we have Donald Trump. But if he cannot become President? Then who amongst the many candidates will he become king-maker for?
It is beginning to look like Ted Cruz.
To the point of spying? Loads of money rides on the winner of this election. And that cannot be separated from the world politic.
There are Jews and then there are very influential people who also happen to control powerful lobbies that just happened to be Jewish. Are they influential in the picking of a President?
    I think so.
Is all of this necessary for a President to know?
I think Obama is not playing a local political game here. He is playing a world game in which our “allies” are often not our friends. So is it wrong for him to keep a close eye on our “allies” in this case? If I were President and I never will be, I would in this case do just about the same thing. I would want to know every detail of what is going on in a place in which we could possibly lose a lot of lives.

Truthfully, the spying has gone on longer than this says. It seems that even with Watergate there was spying. Does anyone really believe that since Bush Sr, Clinton and Bush Jr. there was not any spying on Israel or other nations?

What a hypocrite, we spy on Israel and refuse to let Pollard go to Israel! LET HIM GO! #J4JP!
