Now That The Election Is Over, Will Republicans And Democrats Learn How To Love One Another?

arguing-public-domainThe 2016 election will be remembered as perhaps the most contentious election in modern American history, and things often got extremely angry and bitter on a personal level. If you spend much time on Facebook or Twitter you know exactly what I am talking about. The vitriol on social media has been off the charts, and there are some people that are actually unfriending anyone that supported the candidate that they were against. This election has also torn apart families, friends and even entire churches. Relationships that took decades to build in some cases are now permanently shattered because of fighting over Trump and Clinton.

Personally, I couldn’t imagine choosing never to talk to a family member or a close friend ever again because of a political disagreement. Trump and Clinton are only temporary, but your family will always be your family. Sadly, we live in a nation where strife, discord, bitterness and resentment are all running rampant, and unforgiveness has become a national pastime.

As a nation, we are extremely divided. In fact, at this moment we are more divided than we have ever been in my entire lifetime. A house divided against itself will surely fall, and if we don’t learn how to love one another I don’t see any reason to be optimistic about the future of this country.

If you are a Republican, can you honestly say that you love Democrats?

If you are a Democrat, can you honestly say that you love Trump supporters?

If this nation is ever going to heal, we have got to learn how to forgive, and we have got to learn how to love others that see things differently than we do.

I know what many of you are thinking at this point. Many of you are wondering if I have gone soft, and many of you are wondering how we are supposed to forgive people that believe some of the most horrible things imaginable.

I didn’t say that it would be easy.

And it is certainly not necessary to agree with someone or even acknowledge that their viewpoints are legitimate in order to love, forgive and value that person.

Let’s take abortion as an example. Most Democrats and many Republicans believe that we should continue to murder babies on an industrial scale in our abortion mills all over the country. In fact, many of them want to make it even easier and want to shower organizations such as Planned Parenthood with even more government money.

This is evil on a level that is difficult to put into words, and what we are doing to those precious little children is on par with what the Nazis did to Jewish people and other minorities in their concentration camps during World War II. And if we do not stop slaughtering babies, the judgment of God is going to absolutely devastate this nation.

According to Gallup, 79 percent of all Americans believe that abortion should be legal under at least some circumstances, and so unfortunately that is not likely to happen any time soon.

But just because someone believes in killing babies does not mean that we should hate that person.

On the contrary, every single individual is of immense value. Whenever you are tempted to hate someone, just remember that Jesus valued that person so much that He was willing to go to the cross to pay for that person’s sins. No matter what someone looks like, no matter where someone is from, and no matter how much money they have, each and every person is greatly loved in the Father’s eyes, and we are commanded to love them too.

We are to love all people at all times and in all ways. Christian maturity is far more about how much you love than it is about how much you know. Unfortunately, most people don’t seem to understand this simple truth.

These days a lot of people are running around touting how self-righteous they are, but most of those same people seem to be quite lacking in real love.

If you really want to be someone that “keeps the commandments”, you should start by getting your heart right. In Matthew 22, Jesus told us which commandments are the most important of all. The following is what Matthew 22:36-40 says in the Modern English Version

36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?”

37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

We should all constantly endeavor to become people of great love.

Once again, that does not mean that you have to accept or approve of what others are saying or doing. In fact, often the loving thing is to point out that someone you love is being destructive to themselves or others.

And as a nation, we are being self-destructive on a scale that is almost unimaginable. We are literally committing national suicide, and until we start radically changing our behavior it isn’t going to matter much who is in the White House.

If you want to get your heart right on a personal level, a good place to start is by forgiving those that have hurt you or offended you. And that would include our politicians. I am certainly not saying that you should vote for anyone that stands for positions that are extremely offensive, but we can definitely forgive them and pray for them.

In addition, if you have had relationships that have been broken during this election season, perhaps now is a good time to reach out in a spirit of love and forgiveness.

Life is too short to go around holding grudges, and those that choose to forgive often find that they are the ones that are truly being set free.

I hear a song on my Christian radio station a lot that goes “every time I look into the eyes of my enemy, I see my brother…” That is my prayer to God, that I might have a heart like that. After all, no matter how “bad” you think someone is, he or she is God’s lost coin.

While it’s true that God is not willing that any should perish, He is aware that many will. No one can come to Jesus unless the Father draws him. Unfortunate.

And no doubt that this is going to be the worst holiday season in many years. Christmas without certain relatives. That’s no fun at all. I’m so depressed I’m contemplating on running away soon.

    • Jim Davis

“Christmas without certain relatives.” That sounds wonderful!

  • watchmannonthewall

Michael, you are writing about a very difficult subject. If we accept scripture as being directly from God, and especially so the words of Jesus, we seem to find a dichotomy there. But is it really?
On the one hand, in Matthew 23 Jesus refers to he Pharisees as “hypocrites, blind guides, fools and blind men, you…who strain at a gnat and swallow a camel, you are like white washed tombs which on he outside appear beautiful, but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones, and all uncleanness, inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness, you bear winess of yourselves that you are the the sons of those who murdered the prophets, you serpents, you brood of vipers”, and so on.
Jesus had some pretty tough things to say to the religious leaders of His day. And yet we know that everything He said TO them about themselves was true!
On the other hand, He came to die for them and others. On the cross, looking at those whom He had spoken to, as above, just a few days before but who now were viciously screaming for His life, He cried out, “Father, forgve them for they do not know what they are doing.” Honestly, the lost really don’t know what they are doing.
In BOTH of the above situations He was loving those around Him. Love corrects. Love rebukes. This nation has forgotten this! The problem today is too many people don’t know how to accept correction or rebuke but these are reasons why Paul tells us the Word of God was given for, “doctrine, correction, rebuke, and instruction in righteousness.” “The commandment is a lamp, and the Law is a light, and REPROOFS of instruction ARE the way of life.”
When we speak the Word about the murder of babies and sexual sin, about placing liars and evil people in positons of authority over us, we should expect those who are like the Pharisees, haters of righteousness, self righteous, to respond in exactly the same way the Pharisees did to Jesus. The only way we can get along with them is to bite the tongue and let our souls be vexed as was Lot’s, and even this will only placate them for a while. Recall even how the men of Sodom attacked Lot for being righteous, just like Jesus! “As it was in the days of Lot…”
We don’t have to get in people’s faces, but we do have to speak up and stand for what is righteous when unrighteousness comes before us. If we don’t, we are partaking of their sins. God is making a clean break in this day between His good grain and the enemy’s fake grain. The conflict is here until Messiah comes! I certainly agree the nation is destroying itself. But even if all the followers of God left, the path of destruction would still be its end. Next year in Jerusalem!

Thanks…one of the best comments I’ve ever read on this site.

Liberals are the most fascist, hate-filled, mooching off others, mean-spirited, envious, resentful, vicious, close-minded, violent, murdering, amoral, stupid, censoring, horse-punching, book-burning, ignorant, uneducated, unskilled, childish, prejudiced, racist, women-hating, man-hating, perverted, thieving, destructive, American-hating, Christian-hating, muslim-loving, communist, vulgar, dirty, smelly, regressive, restrictive, prohibitive, bed-wetting, cop-killing, and scared little lying thumb-sucking people God has ever created.

But will still must love them as Christians as hard as that is.

There’s good & bad on both sides and each side has good and bad qualities. I listen to liberal radio and conservative stations in the car (unfortunately MSM).

    • shot injured eunuch

There’s good & bad in both groups. Soros pays for some of the anti-Trump protests so its a job.

    • RageHard84

I agree. Those gay people will call you idiot or moron simply for disagreeing with them. They are just as bad as white supremacists. I will never attend a gay wedding. Gay weddings are morally equivalent to KKK rallies.

  • Alan

Everybody has value especially those little babies. Except , of course, if one of those “sweet little babies” through their god given DNA, by the way, is in your words “homosexual”. Then they are a sad, sinful pervert awaiting god’s wrath. Your logic is zero and your hypocrisy is sickening.
(Oh, that’s right, it’s their choice.) Better not hope karma is real.

There’s a lot of people who used to be gay but no longer are which shows they aren’t born that way. There’s even a site filled with ex-gay stories but I can’t remember it. It’s a spirit.
No, I’m not a gay hater. I still let the gay girl at work feel how soft/smooth my arm is (I lack T but of course didn’t tell her why).

The hard thing about Christianity is wearing pants when working & in summer if u live in a very hot place. I’m a 3unuch and pants make even more h flashes. The menopause is much worse than females. Everyone in my job function wearing sweater/jacket but me most of time. Luckily the main phase hit last winter & not summer.
The flashes never completely go away.

I disagree with born gay. Some become gay later in life & some quit. I’m a 3unuch not taking hormone replacement & I’m still some percent attracted to a few female faces like a few whites around age 20 if perfect (but usually not even then).

Could the “contentious” nature and tone be because one side had been referring to EVERY candidate of the opposing party with the same nasty tone and words for three decades?
And each new candidate worse than the last.
I will love the left when (and if) they stop loathing me because I don’t agree with them.
I can forgive them for their stupidity, but I’m not obliged to roll over.

    • Wow, I am happily surprised to see someone on this site openly refer to how atrociously Barack Obama, Al Gore, and Hillary Clinton have “been referred to by the opposing party with the same nasty tone and words for three decades”. Even John Kerry and other “nobodies” on the left have received this awful, anti-Biblical treatment from supposed Bible-believers. Heck, they still get that sinful treatment from the Right.

Kudos to letting some truth out. May it set us all free.

My thoughts on the aboved mentioned satanists.
If we do not try and convict them of treason, the least we should do is strap them face up in public outhouses so that we the people can give back to them what they have given to us.
        BEST ELECTION EVER !!!!!!!!!!

        God bless Donald John Trump.

      • RageHard84

Carrie, don’t forget about the awful, anti-Biblical treatment from supposed Bible-believers on the Left. They’ll call you stupid simply for disagreeing with them. Just like those awful, horrible, arrogant, cruel white supremacists.

White supremacists and leftists: The same people, just with different agendas.

        • pubpubpub

What have “White Supremacists” ever done to you?

          • RageHard84

They tend to be jerks online.

And by white supremacist, I refer to someone who believes the white race to be superior. I reject the liberal BS that all conservatives are racist.

  • Ray S.

Rep. and Dem. are just labels. What we really have now are Dems. who are actually Marxists and Reps. who are really Dems. The policies they now stand for have shifted in the last two decades but they still want to be called Rep. and Dem. when in reality they are neither.

  • DJohn1

This world is full of liars, thieves, murderers, and of course, various types of sexually oriented individuals.
Most of which congregate in the Democrat Party. So the answer is no. We do not love them.
What we want is to not have a target on our backs because we do not condone much of what has been said in paragraph 1.
The question is what will the Republican majority now do next?
Because that party appears to be owned, body and soul, by the rich.
Until such time as candidates for office are required to be clean individuals and not involved in dirty activities this country is going down fast.
None of us are perfect. But a lot of us want clean individuals working for the common good in office. The current situation is a next of vipers and it hasn’t changed in a very long time.
Trump is hopelessly outnumbered by this lot.
Only time will tell if he can straighten out this mess of influences.
Or if he will live long enough to do it. Past history indicates that is a real problem and a real possibility that some hate-filled individual might actually take him out.
So most of us wait and see.

    • “This world is full of liars, thieves, murderers, and of course, various types of sexually oriented individuals.
Most of which congregate in the Democrat Party.”

Ahem. Crime blotters illustrate that the above sinners are very highly represented in the Republican party, as well as the Church. If your G-d is a bigot, then switch religions. Try the Bible for instance, and you’ll never spout off like you did again.

Also, Donald is a sinner of the worst degree. On top of that he seems incapable of rational or intelligent thought. If he is allowed to stay in Office (semi-unlikely, considering he has no less than 75 current lawsuits he’d hoped would go away if he became President, sadly, he does not get immunity with the Presidency), we’d better hope that the people pulling his strings and telling him what to do are considerably less stupid than he is.

People who helped that pig into the Office of the Presidency cannot live long enough to repent well enough. patheos (dot) com/blogs/godisnotarepublican/2016/10/theres-no-way-in-hell-jesus-would-vote-for-donald-trump

  • SurrealReality

I’ll learn to love Democrats when they stop “booing” the Name of God, stop promoting abortion, stop promoting homosexuality, stop trying to remove Jesus Christ from society and adopt free market capitalism.

Until then they’re my adversaries and I’ll treat them as such.

    • And THIS is exactly why people are leaving the Church in droves. What kind of awful person would want to affiliate with any so-called G-d Who would count you among His acolytes?

When the Church was perceived to be good, and its followers were perceived to be intent upon doing G-d’s good work is when the Church was most successful (by successful, I mean had good numbers of good people). Now what’s left to a great degree are the ones who only claim to be Christian so they can feel holier than everyone else and to have exclusive rights to “hate” whomever they want.

THAT is never under any circumstance what G-d of the Bible wanted for His creation. It seems that your “adversaries” are more godly than your ilk are.

      • SurrealReality

In my opinion people hate the Church because of sour old bitches like yourself.

It looks like the Hitlary youth are not into peace, love, and understanding!

    • And the Trumpjungen are??

I’d rather have my local freeway off ramp clogged with sign-waving idealists than have my children/neighbors/friends beaten, choked, or threatened like Dachau Donald’s armband-wearing followers are doing to innocent people.

It’s the KKK-approved candidate (that would be Donald) whose followers refuse to learn anything about “peace”, “love”, or “understanding”. If you church has taught you any differently, you’ve been swallowing the lies of a false prophet.

      • Abe

You know Hitliary was the only candidate that took money from the KKK.

I’m into peace, love, and understanding. I’ve been called every name in the book. Most I don’t even know what there talking about with out a dictionary.

I’ve not been going to church for over 40 years now. But I do have my faith. So you say that God is love, and love conquers all is a lie?

strife, bitterness, resentment, grudges are for the most part caused by androgens in males. I can’t speak for males who’ve lost their androgens early in life because their brain might be wired differently?
I don’t feel like wasting time explaining now (need to live in the real world instead of internet) but generally strong negative thoughts / emotions / especially aggressions r caused by androgens

I could still be faux mad but in reality it’s not really there.

Christians are NOT called to clean up the world. Their obligation is to proclaim the gospel and to also care for the least among us. No politics involved with that.

Republicans and Democrats love each other. It’s about money. Forget gay marriages, abortion, legalization of cannabis. They are different about details which the masses are obsessed about. They are for your money and big businesses! Republicans are for military and petroleum industry mostly. Democrats are about banks. We’ve been all duped.

  • RageHard84

Donald Trump had white supremacists on his side. Hillary Clinton had the LGBT movement on her side. Both groups are equally disgusting. Both are cruel, arrogant people who will insult you simply for disagreeing with them. I think both groups are hard for me to love.

  • pubpubpub

Never. We need to split the country.
