Drugged Into Oblivion: Nearly 60 Percent Of All U.S. Adults Are On Prescription Drugs

Pill Bottle - Public DomainIf you have a health problem, even if it is just an imaginary one, some giant pharmaceutical company out there is probably making a pill for it.  According to shocking new research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 59 percent of all U.S. adults are on at least one prescription drug, and 15 percent of all U.S. adults are on at least five prescription drugs.  These numbers have never been higher, and they tell us that the United States is the most drugged nation on the entire planet.  And it turns out that pushing these drugs on the American people is extremely profitable.  For instance, Americans spent 100 billion dollars on cancer drugs alone last year.  That isn’t “million” with an “m” – that is “billion” with a “b”.  The profits that some of these pharmaceutical companies are making are absolutely obscene, and it is our pain and suffering that is making them rich.

So why is prescription drug use rising so rapidly?  As noted above, 15 percent of us are now taking 5 or more of these drugs on a regular basis, but back in 1999 that number was sitting at just 8.2 percent.

This newly released report blames much of the problem on obesity

The population is getting older, but that doesn’t explain it, Kantor said. The pattern looks more related to obesity, which is steadily rising, More than two-thirds of the adult U.S. population is overweight or obese, and many suffer the heart disease, diabetes and other metabolic disorders that go along with being too heavy.

And without a doubt, we have an epidemic of obesity in the United States.  The following facts on American obesity come from from my recent article entitled “America #1? 36 Facts That Prove That The United States Is An ‘Exceptional’ Nation“…

#1 According to a brand new report that was just released by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the United States has the fattest population in the entire industrialized world by a wide margin.

#2 That same report from the OECD also found that we are number one in child obesity.  In fact, at 38 percent our rate of childhood obesity is even higher than our overall rate of obesity.

#3 According to USA Today, the obesity rate in the United States has more than doubled over the past 25 years.

But the truth is that obesity is only part of the story.  Drug use of all types is soaring, and commercials for the latest and greatest drugs seem to run around the clock on virtually every television network.  Here are some more specific numbers from this newly released report

In the study, blood pressure drugs were among the most prescribed, increasing from 20% of adults in 1999-2000 to 27% in 2011-2012.

Statins increased from 6.9% to 17%; antidepressants increased from 6.8% 13%; antidiabetic drugs increased from 4.6% to 8.2%;and tranquilizers and sedatives increased from 4.2% to 6.1%.

The increase in the use of antidepressants really disturbs me.  They are often prescribed needlessly, and they can have some extremely negative side effects.

In particular, I think that it is important to mention that nearly every single mass shooter in the United States in recent years has been on antidepressants.  The mainstream media never talks about this connection because the pharmaceutical companies purchase gobs of advertising time from them.  But the reality of the matter is that these drugs can cause people to behave in extremely irrational ways.  Even the Mayo Clinic admits this

Most antidepressants are generally safe, but the Food and Drug Administration requires that all antidepressants carry black box warnings, the strictest warnings for prescriptions. In some cases, children, teenagers and young adults under 25 may have an increase in suicidal thoughts or behavior when taking antidepressants, especially in the first few weeks after starting or when the dose is changed.

Of course that is a very watered down version of the truth, and if you start seriously digging into this you will soon discover a whole host of absolutely horrifying stories.

But the pharmaceutical companies are never going to stop what they are doing, because it is making them exceedingly wealthy.  As I mentioned above, Americans spent 100 billion dollars on cancer drugs last year, and the big drug firms love milking cancer patients for all that they are worth.  According to NBC News, two of the latest cancer drugs that have been developed “are priced at $12,500 a month“.

How do executives at those companies sleep at night?

They are getting rich from price gouging cancer patients.

How disgraceful is that?

Here are some more statistics about the drugging of America that come from one of my previous articles

According to the CDC, approximately 9 out of every 10 Americans that are at least 60 years old say that they have taken at least one prescription drug within the last month.

There is an unintentional drug overdose death in the United States every 19 minutes.

In the United States today, prescription painkillers kill more Americans than heroin and cocaine combined.

According to the CDC, approximately three quarters of a million people a year are rushed to emergency rooms in the United States because of adverse reactions to pharmaceutical drugs.

The percentage of women taking antidepressants in America is higher than in any other country in the world.

Children in the United States are three times more likely to be prescribed antidepressants as children in Europe are.

A shocking Government Accountability Office report discovered that approximately one-third of all foster children in the United States are on at least one psychiatric drug.

A survey conducted for the National Institute on Drug Abuse found that more than 15 percent of all U.S. high school seniors abuse prescription drugs.

Many of these antidepressants contain warnings that “suicidal thoughts” are one of the side effects that should be expected.  The suicide rate for Americans between the ages of 35 and 64 rose by close to 30 percent between 1999 and 2010.  The number of Americans that are killed by suicide now exceeds the number of Americans that die as a result of car accidents every year.

So what is your take on all of this?

Do you have any prescription drug horror stories to share?

The data you mentioned concerning foster children is heartbreaking, Michael.

Well with the amount of liberals and homosexuals we have in this country, they have to take something for their mental disorder.

I’m sure you spend quite a bit buying Preparation H for your mouth

I see Mr. Packs the fudge has not taken his meds today.

I think the gay condition could be part of the species-specific internal population control mechanism. There could be a thing built into the genome that causes conditions like his to increase once the population reaches a certain percentage of the total resources available.

Hormonal pill ……….. taken during pregnancy accidentally, yes, feminizes males. It does the same in waterways, where our urine gets dumped. turns all the fish female.

          Funnier :) :)

      • shots = autism

I’ve always thought that the gay condition could be part of the species-specific internal population control mechanism. There could be a code built into the genome that causes conditions like yours to increase once the population reaches a certain percentage of the total resources available. The purpose could be to slow down population growth so a specific species doesn’t completely use up the available resources which would increase the likelihood of extinction. As humans use up more and more resources, the number of gays increases as well, forming a sort of control to keep growth in check. Individual cells have a growth check mechanism and so maybe there’s one for entire species.

        Funny :)

Social conservatives think marijuana is evil but it’s one of the best cures for cancer ever. I’ve even had comments rejected on a Christian site after I added the leaf symbol.

  • William Lutz

I hate companies who profiteer off of people like this. Predatory capitalism at its finest.

  • William Lutz

    Capitalism can be evil.

A simple exercise in logic. GMO products are allowed in this Country, but banned in many other Countries. Food additives allowed in this Country, are banned in many other Countries. The side effects from this items, range from cancer, to obesity. How much might a drug company, pay a food company. If they were willing to add these products. Add to that the drug companies, seldom seek out cures to anything. The money is in treatments.

I think the garbage we eat has a lot to do with it. Also, perhaps, the constant chem trails being sprayed into the sky, which precipitates onto the land. The factors are probably multiple, but if we ate whole unprocessed foods, organic when possible, and cut out table sugar, we’d be a lot better off. The soil is so depleted, they have to supplement it and our food with more nutrients. A healthy, moderate lifestyle often goes a long way in fighting off diseases of all kinds, though.

      • Amber

I absolutely agree! The more ppl who eat that trash, which has little to no nutrience, deal with more and more cronic issues that in turn require RX drugs. Taking care of ourselves by putting in good could, in my opinion, fix so many of these dependencies on RX drugs. Our bodies are Are able to self heal when we treat them right. Chemtrails are one thing we don’t have control over but all the more reason to take control of what we can.

The entire medical profession will have to change over the next 10 years. That includes the drug sales staff that go around convincing doctors of their own free will that they have the perfect pill to resolve whatever issue you have.
Our pharmacy people in the drug trade are mostly to blame. A year ago one medicine cost 26 dollars a tube. It is now up to $75 a tube. Same medicine double the dose is $25 for a horse.
I can only conclude that the drug company thinks more of a fine breed horse than they ever did about me.
    $25-$75? Same medicine exactly?
I maintain that the cash cows of medicine will never change voluntarily. Those include all of the diabetic supplies. All of the heart medicines. All of the cancer surgeries. All of the cancer drugs they charge an arm and a leg for. No pun intended.
Other countries are negotiating a price on drugs for everyone.
It is much lower than the suckers in the United States pay for the same exact drug.
In Canada for instance it is much lower priced.
I maintain that diabetes will never be cured because there is far too much money being made on NOT curing it.
When you get a dollar a test strip, why change?
Even though a chip underneath the skin could give you 24/7 coverage of where your sugars are they will not do it.
Congress has designated one treatment for Cancer. It is a system that makes people far sicker than it is worth. Yet that is the only legal treatment a doctor can prescribe for Cancer.
In another time and another place, bleeding a patient would have been the only treatment authorized by the lawyers.
That is how ridiculous our laws and our medical professionals are.
Dentists for years have known that mercury compounds in the fillings of your teeth were bad.
50-60 years later they are finally getting around to using a different method of filling teeth.
By the way that mercury is likely to be a cause of Alzheimers.
Over the years the fillings get old and leech right into your blood stream as a small but steady poison in your body.
But lord knows, we cannot criticize the methods of our doctors . . .
We have the worst possible finance system in the world concerning medicine. It is likely to leave a lifetime’s worth of savings in the dust. And insurance companies gladly support such a system with 6,000 dollar deductables for retired people.

That is like stripping a person financially then giving them their undershorts back.
No other country I know of even supports such a scheme.
Thank the medical profession as the raid your bank account. Because they are the ones that do not want to change such a corrrupt system.

simple solution to the high price of medical care: have anti-monopoly laws apply to drug companies, insurance companies, hospitals, doctors, etc.

Karl Denninger has shown that prices would drop by up to 80%

      • Robert

I am thinking that there is no law or legislation that corporate lawyers cannot find a way around, over or through. The lobbyists control legislation. There are never enough competent govt investigators to cover the business world. Even if a corporation gets caught they pay a measly fine and go on. People who really need meds such as diabetics are screwed. Your solution is simple but there is no govt will to implement it.

        • Gay Veteran

“…Your solution is simple but there is no govt will to implement it.”

because the corporations OWN the government

Regarding your comment on mercury, I switched to a mercury free dentist years ago, and he’s the best dentist I’ve ever had. I got the amalgum fillings replaced with ceramic ones, as i could afford it, as it is a little more expensive to go ceramic. They put a plastic shield into my mouth each time so that I couldn’t swallow tiny particles of the amalgum as they removed the old filling. (Even gold fillings include mercury and other materials). His staff also gives much more thorough care, and some of the issues I had in the past are resolved, while others are being kept from worsening. They educated me on how to take care of my teeth, other than brushing and flossing, as well.

As far as mercury in dentistry goes, they have stringent ways they must dispose of amalgum fillings and mercury. Obviously, they don’t breathe it in, and they also wear masks for protection from patients’ germs and vice versa. The thing that clinched it for me, was when I read a dentist’s article describing how a female patient with breast cancer had several x rays taken to determine if the cancer had spread. On one of the x rays, a direct line was observed going from one of her amalgum fillings to the exact site of the tumor, because of leaching. I don’t remember his name now, and he has probably since passed away, but for many years one of the most successful oncologists in the world, in Brussels, i think, was treating even many stage 4 cancer patients successfully with alternative therapies, which sometimes included laetrile, under close supervision. But he refused to treat any patients with amalgum fillings until they had them replaced with ceramic ones.

  • Robert

What happened to personal responsibility? Simply DO NOT take the drugs. Is that not a basic freedom? Free to choose not to do something? People are always harping on loss of freedom. Everyone is essentially free to choose to follow a healthy lifestyle but they choose not to. What Michael is reporting here is that many Americans are horribly lazy and stupid. The worst thing that occurred was Geo Bush bringing us a Medicare prescription benefit. It deepened the trough for the pharma companies. Still, people can reject drugs and alcohol. Funny, you do not see many obese Moslems in various photos. Why is that?

    • Debra

You are correct on the lazy and stupid Americans. I used to think it was simple enough that a child could get it ….but then after 9 or so years of not owning a TV, and then seeing a recent ‘Reality’ show and the “Con–tent” of the show i know for sure that any one over the age of 5 or 6 and on “MEDS” already is LOST and will soon be Damned to the ‘Education System’ and be indoctrinated to the point of not being able to THINK CRITICALLY for THEMSELVES and TAUGHT to NOT BELIEVE THEIR OWN EYES, EARS, AND GOD FORBID THEIR OWN HEART!!!
Sadly, we are rarely taught any responsibility for your own selves and most of America runs from it like it’s the Ebola virus, Just like they run from GOD……….Never mind that the whole country was built upon HIS ROCK and that THEIR OWN CONSTITUTION DECLARES IT SO! YOUR IN-A-LIEN-ABLE RIGHTS WERE GIVEN BY GOD THEREFORE HE IS WHO NEEDS BE PETITIONED FOR A LIEN UPON YOUR RIGHTS!! REAL HARD, HUH?????? SO WHO’S GOT THE PAPERWORK WITH GOD’S SIGNATURE ON IT???

    • ang

We are actuallly lied to. The pharma drug trials are fraud, GSK just got fined 3 billion for a fraudulent drug, that has killed thousands, but they actually made a 14 billion profit from the fraud. Every big pharma company has been fined, some many times, all in the last 3 years………….

  • Charles Savoie

I got 100% positive resolution of three serious health issues for a total of under $300 and no pharmaceuticals. One, a subclavian artery aneurysm (age 53) using horse chestnut and butcher’s broom, herbs more well known in Europe, they have vasoconstrictive properties. It worked because I didn’t wait too late to take action. Two, along with the aneurysm, I had heavily calcified arteries, totally resolved with fresh lemon juice and plain water twice daily on empty stomach for six months. All symptoms resolved in both issues after 23 days, I remained on the daily discipline for over 5 more months and juice one lemon per week. Lemon is loaded with citric acid which is a calcium solvent and works faster than vitamin K-2 and pomegranate combined. Three, a bladder/prostate infection, 100% resolved in under 3 days with a $6.95 bottle of garlic tablets. Doctors can’t be totally replaced but they can sure be minimized by at least 80%.

    • oty

The feds are busy banning natural cures & blocking imports.

      • iris

yep. And even though great strides have been made technologically in medicine, our increasingly socialized form of medical treatment entails the most basic of services and often a long waiting list. Millionaires can afford the really good doctors most effective treatments and medicines, but some of them are retiring in disgust because of all of the narrow parameters and the end result of reduced pay which they now must deal with if they want to continue practicing.

        • iris

Because of the data I’ve seen, if i were diagnosed with cancer which couldn’t be cured with surgery, I really wouldn’t want to go with chemo or radiation as a form of treatment. True, although chemo and radiation can give remission for about 5 to 10 years if some malignant cancers are caught early enough, they’re so expensive and do so much damage to the body, and then, sometimes, the cancer recurs or another type of cancer occurs down the road, possibly caused by “the cures”. If it does recur, many times, they don’t advise further treatment other than to alleviate symptoms. I’d rather live as healthily as I can now, and if I get a malignant tumor, do what I can under the advice of a naturopathic doctor. Anyway, I’m looking forward to heaven, the ultimate healing!

        • desert nudist

Unless we put medical freedom into the Constitution the time will come when medicine will organize itself into an undercover dictatorship. To restrict the art of healing to doctors and deny equal privileges to others will constitute the Bastille of medical science. All such laws are un-American and despotic.

Benjamin Rush, Signer of the Declaration of Independence

          • iris

Ummm, good one, dn! But isn’t that exactly what we’re looking at, now? The government now controls or at least oversees medical practice, because they got jealous of the insurance companies controlling it?. Before the insurance companies got into the act, doctors charged their rates to patients directly, often made house calls or talked through problems with patients they knew via phone conversations. Before that, fees were often paid in trade, i.e., a chicken for the flu, work on the property for a while for something more serious.

  • desert nudist

I don’t take any drugs and I never get sick. If something ever went wrong I’d try natural stuff like colloidal silver first depending on what’s wrong.

  • HeisKingofKings

A Backwards pricing and product model. Take notice next time you are in a Grocery Store. The items that are really good for you are very expensive such as Non-GMO and Organic, whilst the food that is loaded with sugar, trans fats and sodium, are very unhealthy and they are cheap, cheap, cheap. So if a person is poor, they are forced to eat more garbage which makes them even sicker and sicker. How backwards is that? Big-Pharma really needs to be restrained, Big time, the sooner the better.

    • iris

Agreed! The conspiracy theorist in me (: has made me wonder about that before, is it another way to get rid of poor people? I.e., Margaret Sanger has been really successful curtailing the African American population, others were and are good at getting rid of Jews, etc. Horrible as the thought is, one theory involving the Vietnam War, was that it was a way to get rid of lower to lower middle class baby boomers, since there were so many people born from 1946-1961.

Louis Pasteur recanted his germ theory toward the end of his life, and admitted that a rival had gotten it right. He urged his fellow doctors and scientists to adopt the rival’s view, but had become so well accepted by then, that they refused to change. The rival’s theory was that it’s not the virulence of the diseases we encounter which cause us sickness, but the state of our existing health, which fights them off or not. (Of course, our bodies are made by God and under His ultimate control, and although they are indeed miraculous, sometimes the healthiest of people get sick). Anyway, because the ruling theory held sway, Western medicine now pushes pills and chemicals for anything and everything. We all know logically that we need to be preventative and individually accountable, but we’re so indoctrinated by the whole system and Big Pharma, of course, that we end up taking things into our bodies to fix problems instead of helping our bodies do the job they were designed to do in the first place.

      • iris

I’m not saying Western medicine’s views are all bunk, there have been amazing discoveries and treatments from it, but we need to get back to basics and natural remedies when possible.

    • and in wisconsin they just passed a law that people on food share or ebt cannot purcase organic items (due to cost) but of course they are welcome to to candy, soda, and gmo laden products.

I am thankful for the prescriptions I have taken, and for the medical professionals who prescribed them to treat the issues I was suffering from. I found this literary masterpiece disturbing in its obvious intent to scare the reader, particularly when there is so much deception and fear mongering going on in the media. As for me, I will continue to follow the lead of my trusted and qualified medical advisors.
