Another NFL Player, A Major Soccer Star And An Entire Church Join Colin Kaepernick’s National Anthem Protest

Colin Kaepernick - Photo by Mike Morbeck on WikipediaThanks to Colin Kaepernick, the playing of the national anthem before a sporting event is never going to be the same again. At first there was a vicious backlash against Kaepernick for refusing to stand for the national anthem, but now large segments of the population are enthusiastically embracing him and his cause. This week, Kaepernick’s jersey became the top selling jersey in the entire NFL. If it wasn’t for this controversy that would be very odd, because Kaepernick has played very, very poorly over the past couple of years.

But it isn’t just Kaepernick’s jersey sales that show how public opinion has shifted. One survey discovered that Democrats overall are in favor of Kaepernick’s protest by a 54 percent to 34 percent margin. That same survey found that Americans under the age of 30 support him by a 50 percent to 39 percent margin.

Overall, the general public disapproves of him choosing not to stand for the national anthem by a 57 percent to 32 percent margin, and you can include me in those that wish that he would not choose to use the national anthem to make a political statement.

But this just shows how divided America is these days. We can’t even agree on the national anthem. Millions of us are angry, frustrated, bitter and confused. All of these emotions have exploded in places such as Dallas, Baton Rouge, Milwaukee, Baltimore and Ferguson, but instead of coming together to work on solutions I only see division getting even worse.

Sadly, some other sports stars have been watching Kaepernick’s stand and have decided to join him in his protest. One of them is Seattle Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane. During the national anthem, he chose to sit on the bench during a recent preseason game in Oakland, and he intends to continue to do this as we head into the regular season.

Elsewhere, soccer star Megan Rapinoe said that she intended to make an “intentional” statement when she knelt while the national anthem was being played prior to a game between the Seattle Reign and the Chicago Red Stars…

“It was very intentional,” Rapinoe told American Soccer Now after Seattle’s 2-2 tie in the National Women’s Soccer League game. “It was a little nod to Kaepernick and everything that he’s standing for right now. I think it’s actually pretty disgusting the way he was treated and the way that a lot of the media has covered it and made it about something that it absolutely isn’t. We need to have a more thoughtful, two-sided conversation about racial issues in this country.

“Being a gay American, I know what it means to look at the flag and not have it protect all of your liberties. It was something small that I could do and something that I plan to keep doing in the future and hopefully spark some meaningful conversation around it. It’s important to have white people stand in support of people of color on this. We don’t need to be the leading voice, of course, but standing in support of them is something that’s really powerful.”

So you can probably guess what is going to happen next.

All over America, young athletes are going to start refusing to stand for the national anthem. They will think that they are being idealistic, but the truth is that this will just cause a huge mess. This will create huge controversies at colleges and in local communities all over the country, and it is not going to do anything productive to help us solve our very, very serious problems.

Incredibly, there is even an entire church in Baltimore that plans to participate in Kaepernick’s protest

Pastor Jamal Bryant is going above and beyond to show his support for NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick by not only wearing his jersey during a sermon on Sunday, but also by encouraging his entire congregation to remain seated during the national anthem.

Bryant, the pastor of Empowerment Temple AME Church in Baltimore, Maryland, said yesterday that he approves of the San Francisco 49ers’ backup quarterback’s protest after he announced two weeks ago that he plans to sit during every performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” at NFL games to represent “people that are being oppressed.”

On Sunday, Bryant shared a photo of himself wearing Kaepernick’s jersey on Instagram before revaling that he and his congregation would be joining the professional athlete’s protest by sitting down while the national anthem was played during the service.

Why do we have to make the national anthem a political issue?

It is very easy to see how this could become extremely divisive. Standing for the national anthem could soon come to mean that you are on one side of the fence, and refusing to stand for the anthem could soon come to represent that you are on the other side of the fence.

But why can’t we just come together and learn to love one another?

Unfortunately, Barack Obama is adding fuel to the fire by encouraging Kaepernick’s protest. The following is what he told reporters during a press conference in China

“[H]e’s following his constitutional right to make a statement,” Obama said at a press conference in Hangzhou, China, responding to a question about the quarterback. “I think there’s a long history of sports figures doing so.”

The president added, “I don’t doubt his sincerity. I think he cares about some real, legitimate issues that have to be talked about. And if nothing else, he’s generated some conversation around some topics that need to be talked about it.”

Look, I am all in favor of protesting. In fact, my writing is considered to be very anti-establishment. I criticize Democrats, I criticize Republicans and I point out evil and corruption wherever I find it in society.

But the national anthem is supposed to be one of the few things that we have left that we can all agree on.

One angle of this story that is not getting much attention from the mainstream media is the fact that Kaepernick only began publicly expressing these kinds of views after he started dating a radical Islamic activist and became a Muslim himself. At one time Kaepernick was known as a “Christian quarterback”, but those days are long gone. This is something that I discussed in the most recent episode of our television show

Would those supporting Kaepernick’s “protest” be so enthusiastic if they knew that his anti-American feelings were being fueled by a version of radical Islam that is antithetical to everything that America is supposed to stand for?

In the end, we have far, far bigger problems than what Colin Kaepernick chooses to do during the national anthem, and hopefully this controversy will blow over soon. But meanwhile America is becoming increasingly divided, and this is yet another symptom of a very deep societal sickness.

“Rome” is burning down around our heads and people are worked up over this? Nuts! I have seen many events where people continued to talk, drink their beer during the NA. There is little civic pride remaining. We are a nation of narcissists. We pay way too much attention to celebrities, politicians and athletes. What a giant waste of time.

    • Jim Davis

That’s why I find it absurd that we play the National Anthem before a game where sweaty men run into each other and people in the stands drink themselves silly while shouting vulgarities. It’s all mindless faux patriotism.

      • Paul Patriot

I wonder what the singing of the national anthem would look like…..say, in 1950? No political correctness, no anti-patriotism, no Muslim invaders shoving their America hating ideology in our faces……

An America where you would probably get dragged off the field by (ww2) veterans attending he game, if you tried such nonsense today……

oh, if I could just go back for one day…….

        • iris

(: But we can’t. BUT wait until the Lord returns! We certainly didn’t do everything right in the 50s, although a lot was still good. The late 1880s-early 1900s was a peak for our country in many ways, too, it seems, but again, there was much wrong present. God bless.

          • saul

” We certainly didn’t do everything right in the 50s, although a lot was still good.”

            Tell that to women.
            Tell that to blacks.

Things are only good if you are in the majority. When you are shuffled to the minority and treated poorly because of gender or race then you won’t say things were good.

No one likes it when the shoe is on the other foot. As long as their not the ones wearing the shoe.

What is there in this nation that is worth unifying around?

Frankly, I never thought I’d ever say something like that but when you look around and see the crony capitalism, but really it is just a replay of the client-patron relationship of ancient Rome, the corruption in the social media of using algorithims to help people find the propaganda the host business wants them to find rather than objective information, the constant missteps of the “experts” in the Oval Office that have wrecked havoc all over the world, all of them, the consistent wearing away of our constitutional rights by those charged with protecting them, the legislating of morality from the bench of the Supreme Court rather than simply interpreting the law as passed by Congress, the sleepiness of “the Church” and the silly doctrines being espoused there almost daily, a govenment that wants to indoctrinate our kids as soon as possible in public schools to remove parental influence, a media that is shoving political candidates down our throats rather than actually reporting facts and letting the people make a decision, ad nauseum, and on and on!

Really, what is there to rally around that will unify us?

There are sizable portions of this society that support one or more of every item mentioned above, though I support none of them. I am not into unity for the sake of unity! It actually appears most agree with this position! They are not planning to give up their support for the things I would point to as those things enhancing the tearing apart of the nation.

So a question: What is there in this entire world, or this nation, that is worth rallying around, in unity, that will result in a just government without a weakness to become corrupted, peace worldwide, equal opportunity for all, an objective standard of righteousness among all mankind, wisdom to handle problems equitably, and a justice sysem that maintains an objective yet disciplined approach to meeting out justice no matter what one’s station in life is, i.e., no privileged class?

Is there anyone that would oppose such a environment? Of course there is! But probably not the majority!

An “objective” system means such a system is outside of mankind’s ability to project influence upon these things. Where do we find that?

    • Paul Patriot

Well said. This talk of unity is a good thing, but we have to be careful at what it costs us for such “unity”

Can’t please everyone, and can’t cater to every ideology and philosophy that occurs in this great “melting pot”

We have to eventually draw the line and establish “absolutes” of what is tolerated regarding our laws, sovereignty, and heritage.

Everything done today seems to be done all under the cover of “freedom of speech” even if it is anti-American and a public venue and celebrity is used to make a statement.

All the while, gun owners are under attack, Christians cannot say a prayer (1st Amendment you know), and southerners are called haters for flying the flag of their heritage.

But, no one says a word if the atheists throw one lawsuit after another because someone offended them, Muslims are whining because OUR heritage offends them, on and on I can go.

In my opinion, all those who refuse to respect and stand during the national anthem of the nation that has allowed them such freedom (to do so), and has given them the opportunity to make lots of money wearing tights and chasing a ball around…….would be given a warning, and then fired immediately after a second “sit down” occurred.

I understand it is supposed to be about police abuse……what it really seems to be is another manifestation of “black lives matter”

    • Mistanick

Cain killed his brother. You speak of unity in a way that is admirable, but not reality. Choose your side, good vs. evil, and defend it. YOU be the one that is not prejudiced, who helps his brother regardless of color, who stands for life and not abortion. YOU be the one in your family to be a peace maker but also stand up for virtue. YOU be the one to give the needy a hand up. EACH of us has that ability.

Protest does nothing. Helping those who you see in need of help does something.

Don’t strive to see kumbiya. You love those whom God places around you. That is where you find “it”.

  • Sm

The story that Michael mentioned that ” Kaepernick only began publicly expressing these kinds of views after he started dating a radical Islamic activist and became a Muslim himself” is a baseless story from infowars (tabloid conspiracy theorist website) and breitbart (racist right wing website).

Kaepernick’s “anti-American feelings were not being fueled by a version of radical Islam” as he said that he refused to stand during the national anthem in protest for the black people!

Michael, you’re making a big deal about nothing. The people who refuse to stand have done so out of their own choice.

    • krinks

By their fruits ye shall know them a wise man once said. His fruits prove him a Muslim the same way Obama’s fruits prove him a Muslim as well.

  • greanfinisher .

For an American citizen to refuse to stand up during the National Anthem is an absolute disgrace, and a direct slap in the face to those who fought to preserve our liberties and freedoms.

  • JackerRaabit

    “Pastor Jamal…”

Stopped reading there. Just another racist black.

    • Jodie Lynn Gaeta

Who has no idea what “oppression” is.

  • Sorry Kaepernick is Jewish and its a staged agenda and no ..the jersey selling is all fake stats to divide us further

  • agnau

There are over three hundred million people in this country. Those named and not named above represent nothing. If you are so upset for your unfair treatment, then leave. I am quite certain the rich one will not help with your expenses. Please LEAVE!!

  • Mistanick

Should this football player play this season, his throwing arm will be broken.

Wanna protest? Go down to your local Planned Parenthood with your arm in a sling (oh how I hate that name) and protest there. They participate in killing 3000 babies a DAY and a lot of them are black, Kap! Where are you now?

  • Jim

I find this discussion to be overblown about nothing. I stopped doing the national anthem when it was government policy to torture people. I can not in good conscience believe in this corrupt government anymore.

    • Mistanick

Jim, what is worse? Killing a soldier on the battle field or taking him in and, yes, torturing him to get intelligence and letting him live?

When a man or I guess a woman is taken prisioner, that person a few seconds prior was in the sights of a rifle sight to be killed. War is hell, as the saying goes. It is not a diplomatic field. Nicey nice doesn’t win a war and we have thousands of dead men and women from the middle east to attest to that.

When you salute the flag, you are not giving the “government” anything, but you are saluting the country that it stands for. Don’t you see the difference?

      • iris

        True!!!!

      • K

Read this carefully as it may save your life or the life of a relative or
friend. In the next few days, some or all of the cities named on the
reverse side will be destroyed by American bombs. These cities contain
military installations and workshops or factories which produce military
goods. We are determined to destroy all of the tools of the military
clique which they are using to prolong this useless war. But,
unfortunately, bombs have no eyes. So, in accordance with America’s
humanitarian policies, the American Air Force, which does not wish to
injure innocent people, now gives you warning to evacuate the cities
named and save your lives. America is not fighting the Japanese people
but is fighting the military clique which has enslaved the Japanese
people. The peace which America will bring will free the people from the
oppression of the military clique and mean the emergence of a new and
better Japan. You can restore peace by demanding new and good leaders
who will end the war. We cannot promise that only these cities will be
among those attacked but some or all of them will be, so heed this
warning and evacuate these cities immediately.” These leaflets were dropped before Hiroshima, this is who we used to be. We held ourselves to a higher standard. And I loved this Country because of it. Now many of you only hold this Country to the same standard as everyone else. A standard I feel ashamed of. So I will stand for the National anthem, for what this Country once stood for. But unless my America someday returns. I will no longer do the pledge of allegiance.Because I owe no allegance to what America has become.

        • Mistanick

K, you cannot create your own conditions on this one. If you want to separate yourself from that country you once loved, you can do that just as Jim seems wont to do. Your freedom to do this is the same freedom you so eagerly seem willing to pay no allegiance toward.

Ashamed? Disappointed? Who has not “felt” this way from time to time. “Feelings” matter not here. Reality in that this great country affords you the ability to complain and be ashamed, disappointed and express your thoughts without reprisal. The USA still remains the greatest country on this sin filled Earth.

It lacks in many ways but do not hold the country up to a higher standard than you do yourself. Do you have mistakes in your past or current life? I do and so I can tell you that we cannot expect more from a country of men and women than we do ourselves. If you and I are flawed, the country certainly is too. The USA still is entitled to your allegiance and salute.

          • GV

you’re such a fool, the police state gets stronger every day, and our imperial wars continues

          • Mistanick

If you are ever taken prisoner by our enemies, I am sure your interrogators will treat you very kindly since you oppose torture. After you are held under water and your face slapped silly, you will talk like a big gossip.

      • GV

every president from Washington to Reagan opposed torture

      • Jim

America took the high moral ground by NOT TORTURING people that were prisoners for over 200 years. Now its government policy! This is totally wrong! I was in navy back in 80s so I do not say this as a flippant attitude. I am not pledge allegiance to this corrupt flag!

        • Mistanick

You have a right to say water boarding and other means of extracting military intelligence in war conditions is wrong. Others disagree including myself.

This is a day and age where normal life is threatened by terrorism around the world. The battlefield is now our cities and towns, places of public congregation, wherever the terror will have the most impact. Most of the soldiers killed in the Middle East have been from roadside bombs. Some planted by kids and women. The only way to fight this type of terrorist war activity is through aggressive interrogation. Call it torture, call whatever you want to call it. In this day, extracting information that will likely save further deaths should not be called “cruel and unusual”. The enemy comes to us in unusual ways now and our military must react in like manner.

The Geneva Convention should be abolished. It was created in a time of battlefield war typical of WWII. That day no longer exists. The war has been brought to our towns around the world and the killing field is our women, children, and men who are not soldiers. You favor killing an enemy soldier but not extracting information from him that would save the lives of perhaps thousands? Really?

Do what you want to Jim. Realize that the war is on your doorstep now. I support any means necessary to save the lives of the innocent in time of war, and make no mistake, we are in one now. If waterboarding a terrorist soldier would save the life of your wife or kids, what would your stand be then?

Right now, you are a man without a country of your own choosing. You have somehow made the USA out to be the bad guy. That is a tragic mistake and one that Tokyo Rose tried to conger to the soldiers in WWII. A tragic mistake to fall for it.

Is the USA perfect? Absolutely not, far from it. Can it be made better? You bet. This whole stand and salute the flag discussion was most currently activated by a football player making 19 million a year. He’s is half black and says the USA discriminates against blacks. He happens to have recently become romantically involved with a Muslim woman who seems to hate the USA, despite her own career made possible by the very freedom and country she seems to hate as not being good enough. Freakish really.

Be part of the solution and not the divisive problem. YOU have the ability to make a difference around you. The flag represents our country and I suppose the government is part of that. If you want to die an old and bitter old man, I guess you can do that. Alternatively, you can stand up and love the country that you have and take constructive action to make it better. Not saluting the flag and having bitterness in your heart will only separate you from that which affords you the protection to sit on your butt and complain.

          • GV

coward, you stand no risk of being tortured after being captured on the battlefield.

    • rawhunger .

Well said, Jim. I don’t stand for the anthem either anymore. The ideals that this country stood for were flushed down the toilet long ago. I’m not gonna pay lip service to what this country is now.

    • saul

Jim you are a lone voice of common sense and reason. Thank you.

  • MEP325

I don’t really care that he decided to sit for the anthem. However, he has shown himself to be a fool and an idiot for making the statements he did about “bodies in the street and people getting paid leave.” It’s clear this idiot buys into the “hands up, don’t shoot” lie and Black Lives Matter. This fool says America is oppressing minorities. Really? He’s making millions of dollars a year and about 70% of the NFL is black. Yea, that sounds real oppressive. Maybe he should quit the NFL and give his paycheck to Black Lives Matter or go to Chicago and see how black criminal thugs terrorize and oppress those communities.

  • Deborah

I ( and many, many, many people in my social circle will no longer stand during the national anthem for the following reasons:
*The anthem has a third verse that celebrates and takes great satisfaction in the death of slaves who were only fighting for their freedom it says” No refuge save the hireling and slave”
*Francis Scott Key hated African Americans and continually fought CHRISTIAN abolitionists in court cases when he was the U.S. Attorney for DC
    * Mr. Key, as U.S. Attorney for DC, ignored and failed to prosecute the murder of an African American woman who fell over a bridge trying to run away from White male attackers causing CHRISTIAN abolitionists to declare “There is neither mercy nor justice for colored people in this district”
    * Yes, there is racial division in America which will continue to get worse without a formal apology for slavery and the horrors that African Americans endured after…. and up until today; with reparations following the apology to all descendants of African American slaves. The truth will finally set us free!
    * For America to cover the sins of slavery and act like “that is in the past’. “get over it” is not the answer. We must deal truthfully with the horrors of slavery, with it’s continuing after effects, as evidenced by this conversation today, and make proper restitution to African Americans just as the Jews received from Nazi Germany.
This is the only way we can move forward as a nation and allow true racial healing to begin. He who covers his sins shall never prosper….

    • Jodie Lynn Gaeta

Utter nonsense! The United States owes nothing to the third, fourth and fifth generations who are the DESCENDANTS of slaves but never slaves themselves. An apology, and reparations will not heal racial divisions; they will only exacerbate them by justifiably angering non-black Americans and by feeding into the rampant self-pity that has infected the black community for the past 5 decades.

  • GV

“…But the national anthem is supposed to be one of the few things that we have left that we can all agree on….”
why? this country has become the biggest murderer on the planet with our imperial wars of aggression

  • Jack Fough

Obama has won the war on literally changing America. He promised us as much and a hell of a lot of so-called American’s fell for his snake oil sales pitch. So, thank you NOT to all you suckered morons who voted him in. America will never be the same. I am not convienced that even Mr. Trump can pull this one out of the fire. All those who gave their lives, their efforts, their best and their all, to preserve this once great nation, was likely in vain.

If that is not sickening enough, these same moronic saps who elected Obama are so brazen that they are slapping God in the face with abortion, marriage, homosexuality, sexual perversion of our children, promoting trans-sex-gender lifestyles, and many other sinful acts, all led by his Heinous Highness Obama the Pervert.

If you think things have EVER been bad before, you ain’t seen nothing yet. God’s retribution upon this land will be momentous beyond the capabilities of the human mind to even comprehend. Prepare physically if you think it will comfort you but prayer and repentance are our only hope. Pray that you may be saved and spared before the punishment for the lost begins.

Prepare to suffer the wrath of God. It is coming our way, very soon.

  • Tomer Devorah

” Standing for the national anthem could soon come to mean that you are on one side of the fence, and refusing to stand for the anthem could soon come to represent that you are on the other side of the fence.”

This is indicative of the spirit of the time we are living in. In Hebrew, it is called a birur – a selection or clarification. This is the call of the hour so to speak. It is spiritually inspired as the global population chooses sides in the final battle for hearts and minds. On the basis of the choices people make today, their future is being decided – whether they will merit to enter into the Messianic Era or be removed from the New Reality. Judgment Day for the whole world – Rosh Hashanah – is but 22 days away.

  • saul

“But the national anthem is supposed to be one of the few things that we have left that we can all agree on.”

Why? Wake up from your mind controlled induced slumber.

Who cares if a person stands or sits for the national anthem? I thought America was supposed to be for freedom. I guess you are only allowed your freedom when you are going along with the masses.

Patriotism is just another level of the matrix and a bunch of nonsense.

A favorite bible verse by many is that in the end times good will be called evil and evil good.

Yet many seem to forget that by being patriotic you are endorsing the evil actions committed by your very own government against innocent men, women and children.

Think about that the next time you want to get all feel good about singing the national anthem.

  • noldaa

Simple solution. Eliminate playing the Anthem at sporting events.
