America Has Shifted To The Left And The Culture War Is Over

Election day 2012 showed once again that America is moving steadily to the left.  Yes, Barack Obama defeated Mitt Romney, but the underlying dynamics run much deeper than that – especially when you take a look at social issues.  Older voters are more conservative when it comes to social issues, but they are slowly dying off and being replaced by younger voters that tend to be much more liberal.  So on a whole host of controversial social issues including gay marriage, abortion, immigration and drug legalization we are seeing a dramatic shift take place.  The American people as a whole are rejecting traditional values and are embracing a more “progressive” view of morality that is being promoted by our education system, the entertainment industry and the federal government.  Those that want to cling to the morality of the past are being told that they “are on the wrong side of history” and that they need to come into the 21st century.  On election night I spent a lot of time watching CNN, and even their “conservative pundits” were trashing those that still believe in traditional values.  Sadly, it is likely that those that believe in traditional values are going to have a harder and harder time trying to win national elections.  It is much easier to get people to change their minds about economic issues or foreign policy issues than it is about fundamental questions of right and wrong.  The demographic tidal wave that is pushing America to the left is not going to stop, and it would literally take a miracle to see this country start to move back in the direction of traditional values.

Twenty or thirty years ago, someone like Barack Obama would not have had a prayer of getting elected.  But now, he is considered to be “moderate” and someone like Mitt Romney is considered to be “conservative”.  That is how far this country has shifted to the left.  The mainstream media likes to talk about how this is a “center-right” nation, but that is just because the mainstream media is always more liberal than the rest of the country is.  The mainstream media is always eager for the rest of the nation to “catch up” to where they are already at.

But the shift to the left is not just reflected in our presidential politics.  In fact, on election day 2012 it was most clearly seen in the results of some of the ballot initiatives and referendums held across the country.

For example, prior to 2012 gay marriage had been voted down every single time when it had been put on the ballot in any state.

However, on election day 2012 gay marriage was made legal by the voters in Maine, Maryland and Washington state.  This represented a huge victory for gay marriage advocates.

We also saw the election of the first openly lesbian U.S. Senator up in Wisconsin.  Adding her and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts to the mix is going to push the U.S. Senate even farther to the left.

Down in Florida, voters decided to reject a proposal to prohibit the use of public funds for abortion.  This is just another in a string of pro-life ballot initiatives that have been defeated in recent elections.

Meanwhile, those that are promoting the legalization of drugs have some stunning victories to celebrate.  Both Colorado and Washington legalized marijuana.  This would have never happened 20 years ago.  But times have changed.

There has also been a dramatic shift when it comes to illegal immigration.  CNN exit polls found that a solid majority of American voters want immigrants that are in this country illegally to be given a chance to stay and be given a legal path to citizenship.  This is a huge change compared to what we saw even just five or ten years ago.

And this fundamental shift to the left will be felt in some of the highest institutions in the land.  Quite a few Supreme Court justices are in their seventies, and it is quite likely that Barack Obama will get the opportunity to nominate several new justices to the court before the end of his next term.

That means that all of the conservative hopes for the Supreme Court are probably dead in the water at this point.  It appears extremely unlikely that Roe v. Wade will ever be overturned, and the court is probably only going to get even more liberal from this point forward.

So what does all of this mean?

Well, it essentially means that the culture war is over and the social conservatives lost.  Obviously I would consider this to be a bad thing, because I am someone who believes deeply in traditional values.

The American people have chosen a direction, and the path that they have chosen is the path of “progressive” morality.  We are already seeing the consequences of this kind of morality play out all around us, and those consequences are only going to get worse.

But to stop the monumental cultural shift that is taking place right now in this country would take a miracle of epic proportions.  Older voters that tend to be more socially conservative will continue to die off, and they will continue to be replaced by younger voters that tend to be more socially liberal.

The American people have made their choices, and those choices will continue to be reinforced by the education system, by the mainstream media, by the entertainment industry and by the federal government.

America has changed, and things will never be the same again.

So what do you think about all of this?

Do you believe that the culture war is over?

Will the conservative culture values continue to decline? Maybe, maybe not. Sometimes its best for a child to get what they want to see the consequences of their decisions. A learning lesson. But, we will have to see what happens.

With SHTF under the Obama presidency, progressivism may take a major blow.

There will be no “taking back America”. USA will go the route of USSR, and after a long period of turmoil, we will be better off for it, just like the remnants of USSR. I don’t want to be part of the same country as Kalifornia or New England as they are presently configured. If I survive the death of the beast, I will migrate to any new nation that does not join the UN. Let the likes of Gary2 reap what they have sown.

It is a scientific (and indisputable) fact that Americans are a bunch of stupid animals easy to manipulate and subdue; these slobs are extremely gullible and incapable to think for themselves. Moreover, these brutes are lovers of wealth and pleasure; they are selfish, slothful, indolent and can be inspired to raise above their brutish existence only by fear of impending death or catastrophe.

Our great nation was founded on Christianity. We prospered greatly and became the world’s superpower or hegemony. Once we forgot about God, our morals decay into nothingness and our protection from evil is vanishing. We will have lots of death in the immediate future. “The wages of sin is death.”

Yo gay vet…. Try the U S Constitution again. Or how about the Declaration of Independence. You can forget about ever going to a muslim country because they’d make short work of you. If you really REALLY think this country wasn’t founded on Christian (basic) principles, you are lost homosexual veteran.

It now looks like more and more americans are beginning to understand what freedom really means. Freedom to marry the partner of your choice (gay or straight), freedom to consume marijuana, freedom to even not be part of any organized religion (if one so chooses). But wasn’t this always a “traditional” constitutional ideal? People seem to finally be shifting away from a “restrictive” past.

No doubt, feeedom needs responsibility to control the consequence of freedom. But I have always felt that this was best left up to the individual. And isn’t this really the “traditional value” of America?

Long may authoritarianism die and, hopefully and eventually, stay dead.

Understand what true freedom really means, folks!

All throughout this campaign, I watched the politicians closely. What I saw on one side was a political hack job. How many dishonest decisions in the Republican Conventions do we have to put up with before we say enough is enough? Even so, Mr. Romney was right about a number of things. Which made the decision on which way to vote even more difficult. Iowa, Nevada, Florida, all smelled to high heaven in this election of candidates. Maine wasn’t far behind them. We may never know just how corrupt this process has become on the Republican side of the fence. I’ll probably never vote for some of them ever again based on only one fact. It was dishonest. It was allowed. So might makes right?
Then we have the background check. Give me a break. You want to put a man in the White House with that kind of business record behind him? All those people out of work because of his decisions in business. What kind of President would that make? Well, if you want someone that is totally ruthless in business, then He is your man. I don’t.
Democrats I have come to see as crooks right from the start. I have a love/hate relationship with this party. They are more honest than their opponents. Not sure why. President Obama was constantly tripped up by the fact finders after his wonderful speeches. The problem was a lot of what he said just wasn’t true. It was lies and partial lies throughout the entire campaign. I personally do not care if he is black, white, or in between. What I do care about is a strict policy of honest facts. I want to be able to give a certain amount of trust based on an honest name that has been earned. His speech writers obviously were not that concerned with fact finders. They were interested in getting elected at any cost.
I honestly believe that both parties are going to have to clean up their act. Or get unelected at the next opportunity.
So what we have is a decision that most people found difficult at best. Do we continue with the current devil in chief, or do we put an equally bad devil in the white house? And that is what I think decided Ohio.
My message to the Republican Party is get a life. I mean by that, start living life honestly and do so with your backers. Next time, do your homework just a little bit better and give us a person with a good background. The last two defeated Presidential Candidates were not acceptable to me. As an average Ohioan, I represent a lot of people because I am average. That doesn’t make me right all the time either. It means I represent what people want to see in their candidates.
Those that do not learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them. I am no different.
If you want my vote in the next election, you better have the “Appearance of Honesty” in everything you touch and everything you do. If I see political shenigans like we saw in the last election process you won’t have my vote. Or my wife’s vote, or my children’s votes, or my friends.
Based on that statement, try putting together candidates we can say, “This is the best person for the job.”
I really do not care which party they represent. What I do care about is their personal integrity and the integrity of the people under their command. If someone under you is dishonest. Get rid of them. You are judged by the people you have around you.
You mentioned things that have passed into law. Only time will tell if they were right or wrong. I suggest that our God will judge them one way or the other. Some things are beyond our capabilities to correct.
I saw a lot of things I didn’t like in the last election. I say clean up your acts in the political parties. Even the strangle hold these parties have on our electorate process is not enough to keep them in office if people know what they do.
So keep exposing the dishonest actions of both parties.

    • Justa Guy

Good post Dave. I think voters need to start looking at the election process as a job interview, which is what it really is. The people we elect are supposed to work for us. If I am running a business, and a prospective employee came to the interview giving double-talk and lies, I wouldn’t even consider hiring them. And yet, the American people keep voting for these frauds. Why would anyone who wants job creation in America even consider hiring Romney, the guy who sold a bunch of American jobs away for higher profits? How did he even get to be a top contender? And Obama? The guy who said he was going to bring jobs back to America during his first election campaign. Where are all of those jobs? Yet he signs more free trade treaties that will take more jobs away from us. Americans really need to stop buying into the “you have to vote D or R” brainwashing, because those are the people who sell out the people every time. That’s the job the people that fund them expect them to do.

And as for the election being a hiring process-if you had a company and needed to fill a position, would you limit yourself to just 2 candidates (that aren’t even qualified for the position, I might add)? Or would you want numerous qualified candidates, that you might get the best possible individual to perform the job?

  • El Pollo de Oro

The late Barry Goldwater (who absolutely hated Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson) believed that the culture war crap was terrible for the Republican Party, and he was absolutely right. The GOP used to believe in staying out of your wallet and out of your bedroom, but not anymore. The GOP is now a big government party. Republicans spend like drunken sailors, and they love to lecture you on morality while they’re doing all the things they preach against (Newt Gingrich, Jimmy Swaggert, Larry Craig, drug addict Limbaugh–the list goes on and on). As a result, many fiscal conservatives who are socially moderate have defected to the Libertarian Party. Look at Gary Johnson: he’s a true capitalist and a fiscal conservative (unlike the corporatist Republi-Cons and corporatist Democraps) who favors legalized marijuana and same-sex marriage. Gary Johnson gets high marks from both the ACLU and the NRA, as does Ron Paul. Libertarianism is the way to go. Stay out of my wallet, stay out of my bedroom, end the War on Drugs, abolish the Prison/Industrial Complex, stop the imperialist nation-building crap, end corporate bailouts, repeal the Patriot Act and the NDAA, abolish the IRS, and please, please audit that abomination known as the Federal Reserve.

Republi-cons are licking their wounds because corporatist Marack “Goldman Sachs” Robama defeated fellow corporatist Bitt “Wall Street” Omney. Boo hoo hoo! They’re saying things like, “We lost our country forever on Tuesday night.” Please! The Banana Republic of America (formerly the USA) was lost when the Democraps and Republicons embraced globalism, bailed out the criminal banksters and turned us into a fascist, corrupt Third World hellhole. And the BRA’s decline will only get worse as long as this wretched two-party system is in place.

  • Kevin

Why would one believe that everything that shifts left is bad? I’m much more of a libertarian with a pro labor tilt than a conservative.

Why is a Lesbian US Senator an issue? A Senator feeding from the Wall Streets table should be an issue. Should we continue to arrest people for marijuana?

The left picks through the Bill of Rights choosing what they like and discarding the rest. They love free speech providing you agree with them. They supposedly distrust the influence of big money upon the government but then choose to disarm the “little guy” and accept that big money while dolling out favors. They believe you shouldn’t have any religious activities in public least it offend someone unless of course it’s not Christian.

The right picks through the Bill of Rights quite thoroughly too. They love the police state and see no reason why more authority should not be in law enforcements hands. They have no problem sending a young person to jail for life on a three strikes and your out final charge of pot possession but couldn’t effectively prosecute Wall Street Crimes (which they are like minded with the Democrats). Their coddling with the Religious Right in would turn us into a theocracy if it wasn’t for the left.

Both sides pick through the Bill of Rights often attacking the same Amendments but for a different justification.

“America has changed, and things will never be the same again.”

    Ditto.

Unfortunately, America lost this election and the America it had been decades ago. For decades now, immigrants(legal and illegal); have been coming to America but did not become Americans and were not pushed to do so and the social views on things like entitlements are different in central and south america and asia than they were under American of 30 years ago.
In a same manner, parents and authorities allowed the US to drift socially so far left that is hurts the future of America. For instance, Europe has had declining birth rates for decades and now face real problems of having productive people to keep their economies growing.

Expect an Amrica like Canada I imagine, more fiscally responsible than Europe; but it’s going to shrink from the world stage.

It is with extreme sadness that I realize this and know that just 70 years ago, America put its life and lives of many soldiers on the line for freedom and liberty and know it’s over and it happened on my watch. If I do meet US WW2 veterans after i’m dead, i do not think i will be able to look them in the eye; for how little i did to stop this.

Look at the bright side Michael. You will have lots and lots of material to write about in the future on both The End of the American Dream and The Economic Collapse Blog.

  • Larry

I could not agree more with your assessment. We have been conducting a morality experiment for the better part of the past 70 years. Slowly our conservative values have been eroded, diminished, or simply conceded to the interests of liberal ideals. Every civilized empire has either collapsed or imploded from external forces or internal degradation. I’m not sure this country is worth fighting over any longer. It definitely won’t be in four more years of flawed leadership.

  • Paul

The people made their bed and now they can lay in it.

  • Logan

The only thing that I fear from this is that most of those who do believe in legalization of marijuana and gay marriage are quite liberal and believe in a substantially bigger government; myself, I think that marijuana should be legalized — why not? It is much less harmful than tobacco and alcohol and will take out the black market in the said states (for marijuana sales anyway).

Gay marriage — well, why is it any of the governments business who we marry? The government should stay out of it and let the individual churches decide.

Anyway, I am a bit weary of the direction this country is going to take within the next four years.

  • Michael

    Turn to Amos chapter 4.

I sent you Hurricane Sandy, and still you would not return to me.

“So on a whole host of controversial social issues including gay marriage, abortion, immigration and drug legalization we are seeing a dramatic shift take place.”

3 of the 4 (gay marriage, abortion, and drug legalization) concern personal freedom. If YOU do not control YOUR body then you are not free. And regarding immigration, there are a lot of liberals who support secure borders.

“Twenty or thirty years ago, someone like Barack Obama would not have had a prayer of getting elected.”

    Primarily because of race.

“…on election day 2012 gay marriage was made legal by the voters in Maine, Maryland and Washington state. This represented a huge victory for gay marriage advocates.”

It is also a huge victory for those who believe government needs to get out of our bedrooms.

“We also saw the election of the first openly lesbian U.S. Senator up in Wisconsin.”

And she won on the merits, not on her sexual orientation.

“Meanwhile, those that are promoting the legalization of drugs have some stunning victories to celebrate. Both Colorado and Washington legalized marijuana. This would have never happened 20 years ago. But times have changed.”

Prohibition (as with alcohol) has been a TOTAL failure. Portugal decriminazied their drug laws and saw NO increase in drug usage.

This is expected to happen ……. the country kicked GOD out of their lives and replaced GOD with Jesus Christ as their pagan god

  • jaxon64

So very, very torn. I grieve for mankind. His foolish and depravity appears to have no bounds.

From my Christian perspective I am at peace. This is not my home and I knew that these things would come to pass. I also am torn between exaltation at the hour and times in which we live and yet so many blinded and lost.

How strange to see the 100% accuracy with which events are unfolding–for good will be called evil and evil good.

Laziness is rewarded, hard work and self reliance are punished. Commitment, loyalty and monogamy are mocked–virginity until marriage is ridiculed….single motherhood, multiple daddy’s for multi-kids, sexual promiscuity, homosexual perversions and even beastiality are promoted if not lauded.

If you’re honest you are a sucker….if you are a cheat, liar or dishonest then you are clever or business savvy.

If you invent your own god, play at spiritism or spirituality or claim godhood then you are enlightened…if you humble yourself before the God of Creation then you’re stodgy and possibly dangerous.

Effeminate men are popularized as well as brutish and manly, strong women…feminine women and strong men are a few rungs down on the “evolutionary” ladder

Drug addled, boozing party animals are fun and exciting…sober, practical and in-control individuals are boring.

Spend thrifts and materialistic lifestyles are envied and showcased… frugality, savers living within their means are taken advantage of if not openly called greedy..

As a society in America and western culture as a whole, we have come full circle again. Our bastion of culture and enlightenment is ready to collapse again as it did before. Who will strike the death blow? Will it be the hordes from the east (like the mongols did in the 1200′s-1300′s) will it be the minions of the great moon god allah who destroy in the name of Islam or will it be inward implosion of civil unrest as moral decay ALWAYS leads to society collapse–100% of the time and counting.

Personally I believe that we are seeing events unfold that were foretold in the Bible with inerrancy 2000+ years ago. There is no place in the foretold events for a moral, strong, wealthy or super=power America–and there won’t be one in a short while. Not only is the culture war over..so is the America founded by our forefathers and the Constitution.

look a little closer at the voting totals… you are telling me that Romney got 2 mil votes LESS than McCain did in 2008… and Obama got 9 million less? and our total voting population has increased…. and yet… less votes by nearly 11 million?

the numbers do. it add up. something is rotten… stinks to high heaven… just saying. there are whispers around the net… might put your ear to the ground!

the culture war is not over, the demographics and values of America have not shifted this dramatically in 4 years. we were fired up and ready to go, this was a watershed election and by all the numbers, it should have been. but something “strange” happened, strange indeed!

    • Sd

      Agreed.
I cannot reconcile how The pre-election Romney rallies were said to have 30K plus fired up supporters while Obama was in front of half empty rallies (that were filled in 08). Doesn’t add up.
I wish we would go back to paper balloting, but I know better. Electronic voting is ripe for manipulation (from either party).

Say it, massive electoral fraud won these elections for the affirmative action president and only just.

Personally I believe that we can no longer call this the USA, it is now a twisted remnant of what it started at. the USA is still the global melting pot, but it now a pot of all the evil in the world represented in one place. I love the USA, but I despise this country. God will judge, and I will try to figure out a way to get the hell out of here in the meantime.

  • Earl

God seems to be satisfied with
    sparing a remnant. Make sure
your’re a part of it. Those
that are not — are “history”.

  • http://socialrebirth.org Stuart Dobson

Sorry could you elaborate on why this is a bad thing? The world is becoming more caring and tolerant. People who force their opinions on others are dying out. We’re starting to recognise that we’re all in this together. Time to celebrate!

    • DownWithLibs

Celebrate…until you have to face your maker. Good luck with that, fool!

      • Mister Alighieri

If he existed I’d be happy to meet him and tell him that a 2000 year old book, cobbled together by several councils, from letters written 60 years after the events in question was insufficient as a guide to believe in him. Not to mention a piss poor way for an almighty being to communicate with his “loved ones.” God is the worst deadbeat dad ever. No child support and no communication, only the promise of a treat or brutal punishment when he returns.

    • ScoutMotto

Stuart, I must disagree about the “world becoming more caring and tolerant.” I see the so-called tolerant ones on Yahoo articles, and their comments towards, Christians, towards republicans, towards anyone who disagrees with their extreme left views are anything but tolerant. I see insults, name-calling, everything that demonstrates intolerance in all directions. Unless an individual is liberal and loves Obama, that person is the scum of the earth to liberals. They maintain no room for opposing views, and have no concept of what “taking the high road” is. I cannot celebrate such leftist hatred.

      • Gay Veteran

sorry ScoutMotto, but using the power of the state to impose your religious views is not merely maintaining room for “opposing views”

  • Colin

    Michael, from the Bible,

Matthew 25:34-36: “Then the king will say to those on his right: “Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the beginning of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you took me in naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.”

Can you please identify for me those principles in the Republican Party platform that respect the words of our Lord and Savior?

There is another teaching from our God that for myself helps me when I am angry at others and have a desire to heap scorn on them.

Matthew 7:5: “Hypocrite, take out first the beam from your eye, and then you can see to take out the speck from the eye of your brother.”

President Obama is a true Christian. He lives his life according to the precepts of Jesus.

The issue with traditional values is that they aren’t fixed in stone. They change with the times. Thousands of years ago, the traditional value of wedding is that marriage was arranged by families. Then, people began to marry for love, and this value changed. Then, in the 20th century, people began marrying people outside their race and community for love, and this value changed. Now, people are marrying people who are of their same sex for love, and this value is changing.

    • DownWithLibs

Gods word NEVER changes, only human words change meaning. I love you enough to tell you to dig deeper in your Bible and learn the truth of what God really thinks of gay relationships. (Hint- Not a good thing.)

  • Dan

It was on June the 17th, 1963 when we lost the culture war. That was the day the US Spreme Court ruled that there could no longer be prayer and Bible reading in our schools. Since then the “wall of seperation” that was established then has grown taller and thicker.

    • Gay Veteran

Dan, there will be prayer in school as long as their are algebra classes. Oh! You meant state-sponsored prayer. Yeah, that’s over. And why is your religion so weak that you need the state to support it?

      • DownWithLibs

Instead of mocking believers, why don’t you crack open a Bible yourself and care enough about yourself to learn a few Truths.

        • Gay Veteran

sorry DownWithLib, I was raised in a Southern Baptist family. finally wised up

you have a brain, USE IT

Gay Vet, I could ask the same question to homosexuals. Why is their idealogly so weak that they need the state to support it?

        • BamBam

Um, they don’t? Acquiring the exact same benefits as straights isn’t special privilege or state support.

        • Gay Veteran

ScoutMotto, first of all, homosexuality is not an ideology.

second, just how are Gays using the state to support their “ideology”?

    • Alexander Smith

Dan, don’t you just love the way you get bashed here?

I can feel the tolerance and love coming from the haters.

second that sentiment. almost wish i was 80, so i didn’t have to live thru what i think the US will be in 20 years.

just curious, and this might be a great new topic micheal; if anyone thinks we are now on a road to collapse with no outlet and are picking up speed.

i look at the drudge report and it seems that there are now daily stories of layoffs, business closings, shortages and brutal robberies and murders. i don’t remember these occuring at this rate on drudge 5 years ago.

    Wow;

I just had an epiphany; I know whose shores are burning at which the merchants of the world will weep as Revelation 18 reveals. Huh… But until that occurs, I believe we are still engaged until the Captain tells us we are relieved. It is not over until the Lord says it’s over; period. Imagine the First Century Christians had they looked at their adversity and simply quit. Not hardly. Even on our worst day we have it far better than they did. Mahatma Gandhi said a very powerful thing, “Be the change in the world you wish to see.” Words to live by.

El Pollo de Oro, re: “The late Barry Goldwater (who absolutely hated Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson) believed that the culture war crap was terrible for the Republican Party, and he was absolutely right. The GOP used to believe in staying out of your wallet and out of your bedroom, but not anymore. The GOP is now a big government party.” Oh, and the Democrats aren’t “the party of big government”? Give me a break. The truth of the matter is we have a one-party system disguised to look like a two-party system. All of that “blue” versus “red” stuff is just a distraction designed to keep us proles occupied while the elites empty our wallets and bank accounts. I, too, miss the great Barry Goldwater, but please do not pretend he would in any way approve of what the left and the Democrats have become.

  • Georgiaboy61

What to call conservatives now, as there is nothing left to “conserve”? I now prefer the term traditionalist or constitutionalist. Popular culture is now irredeemably corrupt, and beyond saving. Instead, we must preserve the values and traditions in which we still believe, for a better day when they can again be honored in the light of day. It is a task not unlike that undertaken by the monks who preserved civilization during the Dark Ages. The values we hold dear may be driven underground, but we can still honor them in the privacy of our own lives and in our hearts and minds. We can also “go Galt” by withdrawing our support in any way possible from the burgeoning Marxist state. In certain ways, we may be compelled to support the “USSA,” but there are many ways to resist; let’s employ them.

    • Gary2

      I would call conservatives finished

I am overjoyed that America is moving left. Its about damn time! The conservatives have caused enough damage to this country with their immoral tax cuts for the rich crap at the expense of the poor.

Next stop—single payer healthcare and cap gains taxed as the ordinary income they are.

Elizabeth Warren and Tammy Baldwin are 100% for the 99% and not the 1%. Tax the rich and spread the wealth!

A wonderful day. Face it conservatives America rejects your way of doing things. I just pray that conservatism is gone for good.

Well Gary, after a few more of your stops, then comes the police state in full force. Will you be in uniform as you progresives goose step through the town square.

      • Colin

Hans Slump, a political scientist, had identified Fascism as both Authoritarian and Conservative. In other words, a police state would exist under a right-leaning state. I am not denying that lefts don’t have an authoritarian side. We have communism according to the same scholar.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_spectrum

      • Kevin

Why do you believe that the left has a monopoly on a police state? The Neo-con “conservative” fascists that we have had in office with rare exception respect the US Constitution no more than the liberal progressive communists.

    • ScoutMotto

Gary2, I hope you enjoy your police state, since that is what’s waiting for you now. Get used to the idea of government sticking their nose into everything you do. It’s scary how many of these have been accomplished. They’re too long to post here but look up Communist Goals (1963) Congressional Record–Appendix, pp. A34-A35 January 10, 1963

Current Communist Goals EXTENSION OF REMARKS OF HON. A. S. HERLONG, JR. OF FLORIDA IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Thursday, January 10, 1963 .

Also, keep in mind the Supreme Court decisions in 1962 and 1963 regarding prayer and the Bible in schools.

“The American people as a whole are rejecting traditional values and are embracing a more “progressive” view of morality that is being promoted by our education system, the entertainment industry and the federal government. Those that want to cling to the morality of the past are being told that they “are on the wrong side of history” and that they need to come into the 21st century. On election night I spent a lot of time watching CNN, and even their “conservative pundits” were trashing those that still believe in traditional values. Sadly, it is likely that those that believe in traditional values are going to have a harder and harder time trying to win national elections.”

Well, the educational system makes it seem normal, and the way it should be.
The entertainment industry makes it seem cool and sexy even the popular thing to be.
The government wants to ensure that the people continue to believe this is normal, and how it should be while it also gains centralized power as a result.

Historically, this doesn’t bode well as a whole, and it doesn’t look like history will look kindly on some of the future actions increasingly becoming acceptable again and with much more fever this time around too.

  • Witness-311

    I beg to differ,

Obama only won thanks to industrial-scale electoral fraud, systematic at the base and encouraged at the top.
Yes, both parties have comitted electoral fraud but the democrats have the lead by far, multiple vote, the vote from the grave, the illegal vote, some districts had 99% of the population voting for him (while 65% for Putin in Russia is considered an electoral fraud).

Obummer lost in every state with photo ID laws.

He would still have lost against Ron Paul.
He would still have lost if he wasn´t (half) black.
He would still have lost if the military vote had not been deliberately bungled.
He would still have lost if he wasn´t wrongly perceived as the candidate taht would avoid an open war with Iran and Syria.

20 years ago, Clinton won the elections and he got 8 years too, yet 8 years of republicanism followed.

  • john e

I fear for the jews. History repeats itself and soon this country wil have extermination camps just like Nazi Germany. Liberlism is fun until someones rights gets trampled on. That’s when liberals turn into winney three year old.

  • Witness-311

    I beg to differ Michael,

20 years ago, clinton the pervert and possible rapist won too, he got an 8 year presidency that was followed by 8 years of republican rule.

Obama only won thanks to massive electoral fraud (the only large-scale industry not yet shipped to China), many of his supporters voting multiple times each, the beyond the grave vote, the pet vote, the illegal vote etc.
Yes, the republicans comitted some voting fraud too but the democrats had by far the largest lead, democrate fraud was sanctionned at the top and systematic at the base.

Obummer is weak and when 2012 becomes known as a golden age of prosperity and security, he and his cronies will be even weaker and even les credible.

He would still have lost without being (half) black.
He would still have lost if he hadn´t asked for the rich to be taxed more.
He would still had lost if the economic statistics had not been systematically fudged.
He would have still lost if he had been seen as a president who would start a war with Iran (the Obama presidency is the worst thing that happened to the anti-war movements).
He would still have lost if he had taken austerity measures in response to rising debt, like european leaders did.
He would still have lost against Cain or Ron Paul.
He would still have lost if the military vote had not been deliberately bungled (see IhatetheMedia.com ).

His supporters voted themselves a pay rise but there is only that much more that the USA can borrow, when the Chinese gov throws the towel, the parasites, be it in the governement, “green” corporate interests and in the “defavorized” ghettos would be cut-off.

They can´t invade China so they´ll demand that you, dear citizens, shares your wealth with them. I am a democrate, I am the 99%, I support the minority struggle against the white racist power structure, I am not rich, I am an undercover black panther or I am 1/32 cherokee isn´t going to convince them.

    Great Article!

I immigrated to this country 8 years ago with hope of American dream. Now I feel depressed seeing that the American dream is gone. I am not an american born but I love and gretful for this country. It’s too sad to see the direction that it is heading to. You’re right that it would take a miracle to turn the country back, the demographic changed but I believe God won’t let us down and we MUST NOT give up on him. Christianity has survived for over 2000 years and it will continue for many more centuries to come!!! God bless us all!!

Conservative values. Gimme that old time religion, eh?

As a student of history, the two most manipulative and ultimately venal institutions have been the organized church and conservative governments. To declare Barack Obama a leftist shows the author is profoundly ill-informed about what a leftist is.

Emma Goldman was a leftist. The Black Panthers were leftists. The IWW was a leftist organization. Naomi Klein and Noam Chomsky are leftists. Each supported/supports an egalitarian society that challenges the presumptions of a capitalist culture based on racist and sexist domination by a small plutocratic class. Barack Obama has no ambitions whatsoever to disrupt the existing hegemony of this society. In fact, he has bent over backwards to accommodate them and assure their ongoing domination paradigm. Leftists are perceived as dangerous because historically only they have had the personal courage to take on the institutions that have perpetuated these evil characteristics. Mitt Romney was so transparently a mouthpiece for that segment of our society that it’s truly amazing he received the nomination.

The most conservative governments have historically been the most repressive and violent. Just survey the last hundred years in Europe, Latin America, and Africa for your proof. The history of organized religion is an ongoing study in brutality. These are historical facts. Why then, do so many readers of this site embrace a societal model that has failed again and again and again and again? Why are you scared of something different? Why does diversity so upset you? Do you have the ability to think critically, or do you simply accept the orthodoxy of dogma — historically failed dogma — to inform your world view?

To make a better world, which we all presumably want, it takes imagination and ambition and a long-term wherewithal to make decisions based on objective facts, not fallacies propagated by magical thinking, religious bias, or what mainstream media feeds you.

Please educate yourself. Please leave your preconceptions at the door. Imagine a new world where your thinking is liberated beyond the tired and painful rote conservative posture. It’s a bankrupt set of presumptions.

    • Idaho Bob

Jeff, you said, “Barack Obama has no ambitions whatsoever to disrupt the existing hegemony of this society”. What alternate universe have you been living in?
Don’ ask don’t tell – Abolished
Defense of Marriage Act – Unlawfully ignored
Homosexual marriage – Praised and supported
      Killing of babies – Celebrated
Energy independence – Crony wastefulness or companies that never could or would produce
      Israel – Condemned
      Islam – Applauded
Jeff, to say that he has no ambition to disrupt our nation’s power and sovereignty is one of the most dishonest intellectual statements that anyone could make, and you made it. In my book that makes you ignorant of the truth or a purposeful dupe. Lenin coined a phrase for such people many years ago, “Useful Idiots”.

      • Gay Veteran

Idaho Bob, you’re part of the problem.

“Don’ ask don’t tell – Abolished.” what does that have to do with the banksters ripping everybody off?

“Defense of Marriage Act – Unlawfully ignored” what does that have to do with a politcal system that now claims the power to kill anyone, anywhere, at any time?

“Homosexual marriage – Praised and supported” what does that have to do with wars of aggression in Iraq that benefits the military-industial complex

“Killing of babies – Celebrated” not sure where you came up with that one

“Energy independence – Crony wastefulness or companies that never could or would produce” as if Big Oil is going to let that happen

“Israel – Condemned” again, not sure where you came up with that one. But what does that have to do with neo-conservatives in Israel and America lusting for war with Iran?

“Islam – Applauded” what does that have to do with America using drones to kills 1000s of innocent people?

“Jeff, to say that he has no ambition to disrupt our nation’s power and sovereignty is one of the most dishonest intellectual statements that anyone could make, and you made it. In my book that makes you ignorant of the truth or a purposeful dupe. Lenin coined a phrase for such people many years ago, “Useful Idiots”.”

I’m amazed at how people like you (and the ones crying over Romney) STILL DON’T GET IT. Obama and Romney are 2 sides of the same coin! Democrats and Republicans are 2 sides of the same coin! WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!

        Idaho Bob

“Don’ ask don’t tell – Abolished” you do understand that in your beloved Israel that Gays can openly serve in the military?

“Defense of Marriage Act – Unlawfully ignored” unfortunately the misnamed “defense” of marriage act remains enforced, but the Supreme Court will overturn it

“Homosexual marriage – Praised and supported” Marriage EQUALITY approved by voters in 3 states. Like those who opposed interracial marriage, opponents of marriage equality will end up on the dung heap of history.

“Killing of babies – Celebrated” by who??? and btw, how many unwanted babies have YOU adopted?

“Israel – Condemned” when? though it should be condemned

“Islam – Applauded” LOL, right, that’s why the Nobel Peace Prize winner continues to kill innocents with drones

      A student of history?

Guess you just forgot the part about the tens and tens of millions murdered by the godless regimes of Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao Zedong, Idi Amin Dada, to mention a few. In fact, if you actually go and do your history, you will find that the number of deaths resulting from atheist godless governments during the 20th century will amount to more than the prior 19 centuries combined. Based on the numbers, these atheist governments epitomize – venal. Don’t ask me for references; I don’t do research for free as a senior philosophy student. I have serious difficulties with the historical revisionist tendencies of left-wing post-modernists to tell us that it’s all relative as if history is some sort of subjective cyclic reciprocity. Skip the grand-meta-narratives please.

EVERYONE IS WRONG. the fact is, the best truth is from the youth. Those who are not corrupted from religion or government. They see the fairness in life. From how I see it, gays are human, so why not treat them like humans? Why don’t you Christians stop trying to force you ideals on others, while refusing to be changed yourselves? Your hypocrites. Just live and let live. If gays get married, how will it harm YOU and your marriage. Simple, it won’t. The only difference is that you just be more angry. If the youth want to be liberal, what the hell are you going to do about it? You can’t, youth are the future, whether you like it or not.

      • Mister Alighieri

This is a fallacy. The governments you mentioned didn’t do the evils they did BECAUSE they were godless. They were simply evil. And if you still choose to conflate atheism with those atrocities be willing to agree that xians and muslims have been killing each other for 1000′s of years because of their religions. It’s the same flawed logic.

Liberal values. Gimme that old time secularism, eh?
To bring up the often exaggerated crimes of religious fanatics and in the process neglect the vastly greater crimes by secular and atheist fanatics obviously shows your secular humanist bias toward history. The truth is that the world has gone down the secular humanist utopia road before and what we got in return were abortions, gulags, eugenics, communism, the Holocaust, & world war.

As you can tell, it is the far left who are obsessed with racism, class, sexism, population control, tyranny, absolute power and ultimately death.

If you really want to find an answer to our current struggle don’t go to the failed left for answers, humanity has already traveled down that ugly road and it’s not pretty. The current secular movement is just the secular humanism of the past craftily repackaged to make you think we are “evolving” into a highly educated, enlightened society. Instead, read who our founders turned to at the crossroads when they needed help in building a new nation:

The founders “Imagined a new world” and convened for the construction of the constitution they did not seek out progressivism, the vain philosophers of the past, the failures of European governments, nor even the fundamentals of science! They sought after the God of the Bible for help in their deliberations in establishing the greatest constitution ever built.

“I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth, that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without His notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings, that “except the Lord build the House, they labor in vain that build it.” I firmly believe this; and I also believe that without His concurring aid we shall succeed in this political building no better, than the Builders of Babel: We shall be divided by our partial local interests; our projects will be confounded, and we ourselves shall become a reproach and bye word down to future ages. And what is worse, mankind may hereafter from this unfortunate instance, despair of establishing governments by human wisdom and leave it to chance, war and conquest.

I therefore beg leave to move, that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessings on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning before we proceed to business, and that one or more of the Clergy of the City be requested to officiate in that service.”

      ~Benjamin Franklin

Don’t be duped by the left and their seemingly “great” victory. The road that they are traveling only leads to destruction as it always has but sadly after sifting through the ashes of their man made utopia they still will believe in the filth of secularism because they ultimately have a never ending quench for their beloved religion: Secular Humanism.

Let me rephrase things so the low to no information conservatives can understand things:

As stated in the book of ezra: I saw a vision of the lord who rose up and smites the evil conservatives who have been corrupting his world. Who have been giving to the rich and hurting the poor. Yea I tell you that no conservative will enter the kingdom of heaven unless they repent of their sins and become liberal. I tell you the truth unless a person becomes a progressive liberal and turns their back on the evil of conservatism they will not sit at my throne in my fathers kingdom but they will be weeping and nashing their teeth in the lake of fire.

The culture war has been over, at least, since we the people allowed Bill Clinton to remain in office after Lewinski gate. To further illustrate the culture war being lost, we only need to look back to the 2000 election cycle to see that our nation began to demonstrate a serious divide. Hanging “chads” and all the hoopla that went with that election was clearly a turning point, an end of an age, in our nation’s history. Since then we have been focused on economic issues while ignoring moral issues. We have applauded Islam and condemned Israel. We have been a murderous nation killing millions of babies. We have been a deviant people praising homosexuality. We have been a godless bunch booing God. We are lovers of self …., lovers of pleasure ….. and haters of God. We are in the latter days living out 2 Timothy Chapter 3. We have brighter days ahead, come quickly Lord Jesus!

Typical response and to no surprise. Let me have a try, Gay Vet.

“We have applauded Islam and condemned Israel.” Israel condemned? when? by who?

        >> I think current articles on Obama not supporting Israel.

“We have been a murderous nation killing millions of babies.” and how many unwanted babies have YOU adopted?

        >> You didn’t address Bob’s statement. Whether Bob adopted or not is irrelevant.

“We have been a deviant people praising homosexuality.” gee, sounds

        >> Doesn’t Saudi Arabia kill homosexuals. If so, and you went to Saudi Arabia and if they found out that you were gay you would be beaten and killed. I don’t get sense of that from Bob’s post. I’m not sure if you’ve been paying attention to the mainstream media, but it’s practically “Gay is the new normal.” Which is a fallacy in it of itself since gays make up less than 5% of the US population.

Fail on your part, Gay Vet. It seems you got a huge chip on your shoulder.

    THE FIRST WORLD EMPIRE

There is an interesting feature of Moses’ treatments of these descendants of Ham that is at once recognizable to one who reads this chapter. It is the parenthesis that fills verses 8-12. It comes in the middle of the table of nations and, in a sense, interrupts it. These verses deal, not with the general movements of peoples and nations, but with one particular descendant of Cush, Nimrod, who is said to have been the founder of the first world empire. Here is the first place in the Bible where the word “kingdom” occurs. Significantly, it is used, not of God’s kingdom (as it is later), but of this first rival kingdom of Nimrod. This matter was obviously of great importance to Moses, for a related parenthesis occurs in the first nine verses of chapter 11, in the story of the tower of Babel.

What is so significant about Nimrod? The fact that he established cities and built a kingdom is important, of course. But there is much more that can be said.

Nimrod was the first person to become a “mighty” man. Our text calls attention to this by using the adjective “mighty” three times in describing him: “Nimrod … grew to be a mighty warrior on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; that is why it is said, ‘Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD’” (vv. 8, 9). The adjective also occurs in a similar way in 1 Chronicles 1:10. Why is this emphasized? Is it good or bad? A little thought will show that it is bad. The empire of Babylon under Nimrod was an affront both to God and man, an affront to God in that it sought to do without God (Gen. 11:1-9) and an affront to man in that it sought to rule over other people tyrannically. Martin Luther was on the right track when he suggested that this is the way the word “hunter” should be interpreted. This is not talking about Nimrod’s ability to hunt wild game. He was not a hunter of animals. He was a hunter of men–a warrior. It was through his ability to fight and kill and rule ruthlessly that his kingdom of Euphrates valley city states was consolidated.

One commentator renders this paragraph: “Cush begat Nimrod; he began to be a mighty despot in the land. He was an arrogant tyrant, defiant before the face of the Lord; wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod, the mighty despot, haughty before the face of the Lord. And the homeland of his empire was Babel, then Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. From this base he invaded the kingdom of Asshur, and built Nineveh, and Rehoboth-Ir, and Calah, and Resin between Nineveh and Calah. These make up one great City. (Barnhouse, The Invisible War)

Here we have a great city. But it is great, not as Jerusalem is great (as God’s city), but great in its defiance of God. This is man’s city, the secular city. It is of man, by man, and for man’s glory.

The later Babylon of Nebuchadnezzar is the clearest biblical illustration of these elements. It is about Nebuchadnezzar, who embodies the secular city, and God, who operates through Daniel and his friends. The key to the Book of Daniel is in the opening verses which say that after Nebuchadnezzar had besieged and conquered Jerusalem (though it was “the Lord [who] gave Jehoaikim. king of Judah into his hand”), he took some of the sacred vessels of the temple treasury, brought them to Babylon and there “put the vessels [in the treasury] house of his god” (Dan. 1:2). This was Nebuchadnezzar’s way of saying that his gods were stronger than Jehovah. And so it seemed! God had certainly permitted Nebuchadnezzar to triumph over his own people in punishment for their sins.

One evening Nebuchadnezzar had a dream that involved a great image. It was of gold, silver, brass, and iron. The head was of gold. This represented the kingdom of Nebuchadnezzar and was God’s way of acknowledging that Babylon was indeed magnificent. But, as God went on to point out, Babylon would be succeeded by another kingdom represented by the silver arms and chest of the figure, that kingdom by another represented by the figure’s brass middle portions, and then that by a kingdom represented by the legs of iron. It was only at the end of this period that the eternal kingdom of God in Christ would come and overthrow all others, grow and fill the earth. In this vision God was telling Nebuchadnezzar that he was not as important as he thought he was and that it was God Himself who rules history.

In the next chapter Nebuchadnezzar sets up a gold statue on the plain of Dura. On the surface this seems to be only the foolish gesture of a vain monarch who insists that the statue be worshiped as a symbol of the unity of the empire. However, when the story is read with the vision of the statue of chapter 2 in view, one realizes that the later episode actually shows Nebuchadnezzar rebelling against God’s decree. God had said, “Your kingdom will be succeeded by other kingdoms, kingdoms of silver, brass and iron.” Nebuchadnezzar replied, “No, my kingdom will endure; it will always be glorious–I will create a statue of which not only the head will be of gold, but the shoulders, thighs and legs also. It will all be of gold, for it will represent me and my descendants forever.” This personal involvement with the statue explains the king’s violent reaction when the three Jewish men refused to bow down to it.

It also explains the violent reaction of the secular mind to Christian claims today. It is not just a question of the Christian God versus other gods, each one presumably thinking that his or her god is the true one. It is the rebellion of man against God, period. God is He to whom we are responsible. But fallen men and women do not want to be responsible to anyone. They want to rule themselves. They want to exclude God from His own universe. at the secular city is also by man for man comes out in the remainder of Nebuchadnezzar’s story. One day, a or more after the earlier incident, Nebuchadnezzar was walking on the roof of his palace in Babylon and he looked out over the city. He was impressed with its magnificence. Judging himself to be responsible for this, he took to himself the glory that should have been given to God, saying, “Is not the great Babylon I have built as the royal residence, by my mighty power for the glory of my majesty?” (Dan. 4:30). It was a claim that the earthly city been constructed by man and for man’s glory.

In one sense this was true. Nebuchadnezzar had constructed the city, and his conquests had brought it to great architectural splendor. Again, he had undoubtedly constructed it for his glory, Nimrod had constructed the first Babylon for his glory. What both had forgotten is that ultimately it is God who in the affairs of men and that the achievements of a secular ruler are made possible only through the common gifts of God to humanity.

So God promises to bring the secular city down. Nebuchadnezzar had judged himself superior to those around him because of his political achievements, so superior that he had no need of God. God speaks to show how mistaken Nebuchadnezzar was. God says, “This is what is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar: Your royal authority has been taken from you. You will be driven away from people and will live the wild animals; you will eat grass like cattle. Seven times will pass by for until you acknowledge that the Most is sovereign over the kingdoms of and gives them to anyone he pleases” (Dan. 4:31, 32). The judgment is to effect immediately. Nebuchadnezzar’s mind goes from him, and he is driven from the city. The text says, “He was driven away from people and ate grass like cattle. His body was drenched with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like the feathers of an eagle and his nails like the claws of a bird” (v. 33). Eventually Babylon itself fell, never to rise again.

It is interesting that in this particular branch of Ham’s family we have a reversal (probably deliberate) of God’s judgment on Canaan for Ham’s sin in ridiculing Noah. God had pronounced a curse on Canaan through Noah, saying, “Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers” (Gen. 9:25). But so far as we know, in these early days God did not put this prophecy into effect by subjecting Canaan, his descendants, his brothers, or any of their descendants to Shem or Japheth. This happened later through Israel’s invasion of the Promised Land, but it did not happen in these early days. Instead, it is the brother of Canaan, Cush, and his descendants who determine to enslave the others.

I say this may be deliberate, for I can imagine Nimrod to have thought in this manner. He may have said, “I don’t know about the others, but I regard this matter of the curse of God on Canaan as a major disgrace on my family, one that needs to be erased. Did God say that my uncle Canaan would be a slave? I’ll fight that judgment. I’ll never be a slave! What’s more, I’ll be the exact opposite. I’ll be so strong that others will become slaves to me. Instead of ‘slave,’ I’ll make them say, ‘Here comes Nimrod, the mightiest man on earth.”‘

This is the normal reaction of the human spirit when faced with God’s curse. It says, “I’ll defy it. I’ll take care of my own problems.” So it creates the arts, raises an army, builds its cities, and marches out to make a name for itself in defiance of God’s decrees.

But God’s decrees are not overturned this way. God’s curse is not successfully defied. There is only one Way we can escape God’s curse, and that is at the point where God takes the curse on Himself. There is no reason why He should do this. But He does. He comes in the person of Jesus Christ “taking the very nature of a servant Christ [a slave], being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-even death on a cross!” (Phil. 2:7,8). Thus “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us” (Gal. 3:13). And what happens? Having thus subjected Himself, He is given a name that is “above every name” (Phil. 2:9) and declared to be the ruler of heaven and earth. That is our pattern: to come to Christ where the curse of God against sin is poured out, to be clothed in His righteousness, and then to learn that path of humble service to others within the human family which is the true and only road to real greatness….

    The Tower of Babel

The tenth and eleventh chapters of Genesis are composed of genealogies of nations and peoples designed to link the story of Noah and the Flood, which fills chapters 6 through 9, with the story of Abraham and his descendants, which fills the remainder of the book. The genealogies begin with Noah’s three sons-Shem, Ham, and Japheth-and move eventually to Terah from whom Abraham is born. At two points there are parentheses dealing with the founding of the first world empire under Nimrod. The first parenthesis is 10:8-12. The second is 11:1-9.

These two go together. The first tells of Nimrod’s exploits. The second does not mention Nimrod but speaks rather of an attempt to build the city of Babylon, a central feature of which was to be a great tower. On the surface these seem to be accounts of two quite separate incidents. But this is not the case. The second does indeed tell of the founding of Babylon, but we learn from the first that Babylon was the initial city of Nimrod’s city-building empire. Moreover, as we study them we see that the founding of Babylon and the building of the tower of Babel in chapter 11 are an elaboration of the earlier narrative. In the first we have an emphasis on Nimrod–what he was like, what he did, what his goals were. In the second we have a treatment of the same theme but from the perspective of the people who worked with him. In each case there is a desire to build a civilization without God.

    THE FIRST “COME”

The account of the building of Babylon begins by saying that the world had one common language (as would be expected due to the people’s common descent from Noah) and since part of the world’s people moved eastward, some settled on the plain of Shinar or Babylonia. So far, so good. God had told the descendants of Noah to “increase in number and fill the earth” (Gen. 9:1), a reiteration of the command originally given to Adam and Eve in Paradise (Gen. 1:28). The settlement of Shinar could be construed as a partial fulfillment of that command. Yet as we read we find that the goal of this particular settlement was not to fulfill God’s command but to defy it. From the beginning, Babylon’s goal was to resist any further scattering of the peoples over the earth and instead to create a city where the achievements of a united and integrated people would be centralized.

The Bible reports this desire as an invitation to “come” together to work on this great project. It is the first important “come” of the story. “They said to each other, ‘Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.’ They used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of mortar. Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth”‘ (Gen. 3,4).

Three things are involved in this invitation: 1) a vision for the city, 2) a desire for a name or reputation, and 3) a plan for a new religion. The plan for a city does not need to be examined at length; we have already discussed it in our study of Nimrod. The important point is that it was not God’s city, as Jerusalem was. It was man’s city, the secular city. As such it was constructed man for man’s glory. The last of these desires–to construct a place for man’s glory–is involved in the word “name”: Come, let us…make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” It was the desire for reputation but, more than that, also a desire for independence from God. This reputation was to be earned by man apart from God. It was to be his alone.

We cannot forget that one characteristic of the God of the Bible is that He names people. He gives them names symbolic of what He is going to do with them or make of them. God named Adam (Gen. 5:2), Abraham (Gen. 17:5), Israel (Gen. 32:28), even Jesus (Matt. 1:21). In each case, the names point to what God has done or will yet do. The people of Babylon wanted none of this. They wanted to establish their own reputation and eliminate God entirely.

    REACHING FOR THE STARS

Thus far in our study of Babylon the one element that has been missing is religion. But that is where the famed tower of Babel comes in, in my judgment. I say “in my judgment,” but I must add that most commentators sense this truth, even though they interpret the tower in different ways. Luther says that the words “reaches to the heavens” should not be applied to the height alone but rather should be seen as denoting “that this was to be a place of worship. Candlish says, “The building of the tower ‘unto heaven’ had undoubtedly a religions meaning. Morris writes that in his desire to build a great empire Nimrod realized that the people needed a religious motivation strong enough to overcome their knowledge that God had commanded them to scatter abroad on the earth. He feels that the tower satisfied that need and was therefore “dedicated to heaven and its angelic host. Let me tell you what I think the tower means.

First, it should be regarded as having a religious end because the Bible traces all false religions to Babylon and this is the only element in the description of early Babylon that can have this meaning. We would expect something like this from the nature of Babylon and its culture and from what is told us of all cultures that turn away from God. Romans says that when people reject the knowledge of God they inevitably turn to false gods, making them like “mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles” (Rom. 1:23). The citizens of Babylon had rejected the knowledge of the true God. Therefore, we should expect the creation of a false religion as part of their dubious cultural achievements. Again, the Bible speaks of “mystery Babylon,” that is, of the reality symbolized by the earthly city, saying that it is “the mother of prostitutes and of the abominations of the earth” (Rev. 17:5). This refers, as do the ideas of prostitution and abomination throughout the Bible, to false religion.

There is evidence that this was the case historically. Morris notes, “The essential identity of the various gods and goddesses of Rome, Greece, India, Egypt, and other nations with the original pantheon of the Babylonians is well established. [In fact], Nimrod himself was apparently later deified as the chief god (‘Merodach’ or ‘Marduk’) of Babylon.

Second, there is the description of the tower. Most of our translations speak of a tower that should “reach” to the heavens, but it is hard to think that even these people could have been foolish enough to suppose that they could do this literally. Or even if they did, it is hard to think of them as being foolish enough to build their tower on the plain of Shinar, that is, almost at sea level, when they could equally well have built it on the top of a nearby mountain and thus have begun with a few thousand feet head start. Actually, this is probably not at all what was involved. In the Hebrew text the words “to reach” do not occur. The text speaks of the top of the tower as “in,” “on,” “with,” or “by” the heavens (all four being possible translations of the one Hebrew preposition). This could mean that the top was dedicated to the heavens as a place of worship (the view of Morris) or even that it had a representation of the heavens (a zodiac) upon it.

I think this last possibility is the real meaning, for the reason that astrology, which focuses on a study of the zodiac, originated in Babylon. Turn to any book on astrology and you will find that it was the Chaldeans (another name for the inhabitants of Babylon) who first developed the zodiac by dividing the sky into sections and giving meanings to each on the basis of the stars that are found there. A person’s destiny is said to be determined by whatever section or “sign” he is born under. From Babylon, astrology passed to the empire of ancient Egypt where it mingled with the native animism and polytheism of the Nile. The pyramids were constructed with certain mathematical relationships to the stars. The Sphinx has astrological significance. It has the head of a woman, symbolizing Virgo, the virgin, and the body of a lion, symbolizing Leo. Virgo is the first sign of the zodiac, Leo the last. So the Sphinx (which incidentally means “joining” in Greek) is the meeting point of the zodiac, indicating that the Egyptian priests believed the starting point of the earth in relation to the zodiac lay in Egypt, on the banks of the Nile.

By the time the Jews left Egypt for Canaan, astrology had infected the population there. Hence, some of the strictest warnings in the Bible against astrology date from this period (Lev. 19:31; Deut. 18). Still later, astrology entered the religious life of Rome.

The interesting thing about these biblical denunciations of astrology is that astrology is identified with demonism or Satanism in the sense that Satan and his hosts were actually being worshiped in the guise of the signs or planets. This is the reason for the Bible’s denunciation of these practices. Are we to think, then, that Satan was entirely absent from the original attempt build a civilization without God? Was sent from the formation of this first biblical religion? I don’t think so. If as, then the religion of the tower actually a satanic attempt to direct worship of the human race to himself those former angels who, having rebelled against God, were now already demons. No doubt, as Morris suggests, “This project was originally presented to people in the guise of true spirit. The tower in its lofty grandeur d symbolize the might and majesty of the true God of heaven. A great temple at its apex would provide a center and an altar where men could offer their sacrifices and worship God. The signs of zodiac would be emblazoned on the ornate ceiling and walls of the temple, signifying the great story of creation and redemption, as told by the antediluvian patriarchs.” But God was not in this worship. Satan was. Thus, the forms of religion became increasingly debased, the worship of the devil and his became more noticeable. “From such beginning soon emerged the complex of human ‘religion’–an evolutionary pantheism, promulgated system of astrology and idolatrous polytheism, empowered by occultism and demonism. Satan is a great corrupter, so it is even possible that this system of religion was version of an earlier, true revelation heavens of God’s plan of redemption has been suggested seriously and considerable evidence that the formations of stars were originally named by God (or the godly patriarchs) as a reminder of godly things, perhaps to the point of forecasting the coming of the great Deliverer who would crush the head of Satan.

    THE SECOND “COME”

The time when the Lord Jesus Christ was to crush Satan’s head was still far off, but in the meantime God was going to crush this first attempt at Satanism. He was not going to do it with flood or fire or some other fierce manifestation of His invincible wrath. He was going to do it in an entirely unlooked-for manner. Instead of destruction, God performed a miracle in the minds and vocal cords of the builders. He confused their language so that now, instead of speaking together and working together, their words brought confusion and an inevitable (because it was divinely appointed) scattering of these people over the earth.

There are several interesting features of this part of the story. The first is a second use of the word “come.” Earlier the builders had used this word for the calling of their council: “Come, let’s make bricks…. Come, let us build ourselves a city” (vv. 3, 4). But now God uses the word as He assembles His heavenly council and moves to confuse their language: “Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other” (v. 7). It is a way of saying that God always has the last word. Like Jonah, we can say “but” to God (Jonah 1:3), although God always has the last “but” (Jonah 1:4, KJV). We can assemble our councils; but God will assemble His council, and the decree of God’s council will prevail. It follows that those who choose to go their own way will always end up frustrated. The prize so earnestly sought after becomes a bubble that bursts at the first touch. The fruit of desire becomes like ashes in the mouth. We may chafe against this, but it will always be this way because we live in God’s world, not our own, and because God has determined to make bitter anything that is prized above Himself.

The second interesting feature of this part of the story is that God came down to see the tower the men of Babylon were building. This is an anthropomorphism, that is, God being described as if He were a man. (We are not to think that God actually had to get off the throne of the universe and come down to earth to determine what the builders were doing. All things are known to God always.) But it is not a “crude anthropomorphism,” as some have chosen to call it. It is used with effect. Here were men attempting to build a great tower. The top was to reach to the heavens. It was to be so great that it and the religion and defiance of God it represented would make a reputation for these citizens of Shinar. There it stood, lofty in its unequaled grandeur. But when God wants to look at it He comes down. He has to stoop low to see this puny extravagance.

It is always thus. When you stand on the ground and look up at the great pyramids of Egypt they seem immense. But when you fly over them in an airplane, even at a low altitude, they seem like pimples on the surface of the earth. The twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City look great. But from the air they look like miniature dominoes. The Eiffel Tower is a mere protuberance. So also with our intellectual or spiritual achievements. The greatest is nothing compared to the immensity of the universe, not to mention the universe’s Creator. The only truly significant accomplishments are God’s (sometimes in and through us), for only these partake of the nature of God and endure forever, as God does.

    INVITATIONS TO “COME”

We have seen two different uses of the word “come” in this story. The first was spoken by man to man against God. The second was spoken by God to God (another early intimation of the Trinity) against man. It would not be right to end without noting that the Bible also knows

a third use of the word “come” in which an invitation is extended by God to man for man’s benefit. God says, “Come now, let us reason together–Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be as wool” (Isa. 1:18). Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). “The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life” (Rev. 22:17).

What is the result when we who hear God’s invitation come to Him? It is just as He says! Our sins are washed away. Our burdens are lifted. Our spiritual thirst is quenched. Moreover, the effects of the curse are overturned and the proper desires of the human heart are provided for, not by man in rebellion against God, to be sure, but by the gracious and forgiving God Himself from whom all truly good gifts come. The curse was the confusion of languages, but God brings blessing from the curse. He gives understanding in spite of the language barrier and even promises (Pentecost is an earnest of the fulfillment) that the nations will worship together, presumably in one voice and with full understanding of each other. The Babylonians wanted a city. Their city could not stand. But God provides His people with a city with foundations that will endure forever. Nimrod’s people wanted a name. But to those who stand with God and who overcome, God promises: “Him who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will he leave it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churchesDO YOU GET IT??

As much as I don’t like drug addiction, I think legalizing smoking pot is a good thing. I just think that putting people to prison is far greater evil and this law will keep people away from prisons which is a very good thing.

    Mikey, Mikey, Mikey,

STILL ON YOUR RIGHTWING REPUBLICAN CONTROL FREAK SOAPBOX?

It has never occured to you why on earth you think the government can’t tell you how to run a business but you think that same government can tell everyone else whom they can or can not marry, if and when they can have an abortion (for rape, incest, and health concerns I support), they must worship the family unit as you and other republican rightwing frauds see fit, worship your god, etc.

Why not come out and honestly admit that you are a big government republican who wants to funnel wealth to the likes of Romney while at the same time telling everyone else how to live?

    —————————————————————
I AM NOT A REPUBLCAN, OR A DEMOCRAT, OR A LIBERAL, OR A CONSERVATIVE. THESE IDIOTIC LABELS MEAN NOTHING AND ARE THE PRIMARY REASON WHY PEOPLE DON’T THINK IN AMERIKA TODAY:

Either you are a closet republican fraud, (which I believe is very much the case), or you have the most serious case of schizophrenia ever recorded in human history. You whine, moan, and complain about the people and the politicians and how both the democrat and republican parties are bad, but in the next breath and out of the other side of your mouth you speak in the langauge which promotes its dangerous and destructive fake left vs right paradigm. You keep calling Obama and Romney “liberals” when in fact they are no such thing. Especially given the fact that Obama has carried out, and Mittens Romney agreed with, every murderous, economy busting and U.S. Constitution smashing Bush-era foreign policy known to man. And I can’t recall G W Bush ever being called a “liberal”.

If you truly wish to destroy the fake left vs right paradigm, you first must stop speaking in its langauge. Knowing that most people who vote for the two parties don’t have two brain cells to rub together, constantly throwing the words liberal, conservative, and other buzzwords and catchphrases only reinforces the straightjacket in the primitive minds of the people. Like a dog to a whistle, whenever they hear these buzzwords and catchphrases, they immediately flock toward the party that is most associated with this stuff.

It’s time for a new political langauge that speaks to the intellect and not the lizard brain in people. Until that happens, everyone will get more of the same until collapse. Or is that your goal, total collapse?

For me, I identity these blogs as right wing blogs. Michael is a white Christian conservative. He belongs to the 1/3 of the population that thinks and believes as he does. I tolerate his beliefs which he espouses in these blogs because I believe, and I have found this to be true, that sometimes he raises valid points. However, I have found that many of the respondents are too far gone in the ideology of the right to be reasoned with. I remember a skit in which Bill Maher is attempting to speak with a Republican. This Republican is sitting on a chair in a bubble. Whatever Maher says, the Republican doesn’t hear. This is the reality of our nation.

Bill Maher calls this the Bubble or Irreality.

I like a lot of Mike Snyder’s stuff as well, but when it comes to the kind of stuff that’s in articles like this, the so-called cultural stuff, that I, a strong Ron Paul supporter and Christian libertarian, must disagree with him. First, he hates Muslims though he’ll never admit it…that is, he hates a group of people. Aren’t “conservatives” supposed to look at folks as individuals? Mike doesn’t, and I can’t support his stand. Same goes for his hate of gays. Look, I cannot stand Islam (I’m a woman…how can ANY woman approve of Islam?), and I cannot stand homosexuality, lesbianism, bisexuality, transhumanism and the like. But God and Christ said “love your enemies” AND HE MEANT IT! thus, I cannot agree with Mike attitude with Muslims and gay and other similar “the other” type groups. As for legalizing pot, I’m all for that–I don’t do it, but for one thing legalizing pot would definitely curtail that ridiculous waste of money, the “war on drugs.” I DO strongly oppose abortion, but Ron Paul is right to call this a states-rights issue. The government has no business regulating what goes on in the bedroom anyway.

Mike, though I think you almost have to be a Christian Zionist (a doctrine I abhor big time), I DO hope you are not a closet or open Dominionist. If you arem no way are you forcing me to wear long skirts and button down blouses like the Amish, Hudderites, and Mennonites do! I will wear, modestly of course, what I want (jeans and tshirts) and wear my hair the way I want. I will fight Dominionism tooth and nail–the Kingdom of God is NOT, I repeat, NOT, of this Earth! Or this USA!

        • Michael

          DL:

Where in the world are you getting any of this stuff?

I do not hate Muslims at all. In fact, I pray for Muslims and I only wish the best for all of them.

However, I do believe that Islam is a totally false religion.

I dot not hate homosexuals are anyone else. I pray for them and I love them and I wish the best for them.

But I do very strongly believe in the standards of sexual morality set forth in the Bible.

I guess I need to make it even more abundantly clear that I love all people. In fact, the Scriptures command us to love others over and over and over.

But that does not mean that I agree with everyone. In fact, it is literally impossible to agree with everyone.

And I have no intention of forcing you to dress up like the Amish.

Honestly I do not have any idea where you are getting any of this.

          Michael

Do you usually get this much troll comments, Michael? Or do they just pop up on certain articles with certain themes (like culture war, abortion, homosexual “rights” and what not)?

So let’s break this down. Are American values changing? Yes they are. More people are accepting reality today than they have in the past. The fantasy of god is being taken to issue and removed from conversations. Drug awareness has gone up. The topic of gay marriage is only looked down upon in small cliques (usually rich white males). Americans are believing less and less of the lies the predominately white christian republican party is telling.

No, President Obama would not have had a chance of being elected twenty or thirty years ago. But then again, fifty years ago he would have run a chance of being killed due to his color if he even thought of running. That argument is invalid.

The gay marriage vote. Once again, people actually being able to get the facts. Damn technology is great. A dirt bag like gingrich can talk about how bad gay marriage is, but has been married three times. He does more damage to the tradition of marriage than any same sex couple that love each other. The information is out there and the people can read it.

And I haven’t figured out what sexual orientation has to do with how a person can perform their job in Washington. Congratulations Tammy Baldwin.

The marijuana initiatives are great. To bad for the big pharma companies that are trying to stop it. The facts are out there, it is a major benefit to patients with a host of problems. The only issue is the revenue loss to companies that can’t market it and control it like they do so many meds. Again, another step in the right direction.

For a party that believes in crap like ‘legitimate rape’, ‘easy rape’, ‘forced rape’, there is no justification to not allow abortions. Please find the nearest time machine and join us in the year 2012. A rich, white, christian male doesn’t have any right to have a vote on women’s rights.

And immigration reform needs to happen. It is unavoidable and just plain irresponsible to not come up with a solution.

So no, America will never be the same. We don’t need to go back to the past. We need to evolve. Yes evolution is a real thing with real data for even the stubborn to read. America voted, now it’s time to move forward.

      Are you serious?

No dear Mike, the real developments are precisely towards the opposite :

In fact, the American Popular “Values” Movement is just starting to emerge in History, (since 2004, 2008, 2010, and 2012, GOP Primaries included).

What has blatantly failed on Nov. 6, 2012, is the RINO’s betrayal !

From murdering millions of unborn babies and experimenting on their body parts, to putting Mugabe in power in Rhodesia, America has been on the path of evil for decades.

Individuals will turn to God and many will be purified, but the nation is finished.

Cruel, wicked, sick, sadistic, haters of God, haters of what is good, this nation will continue to be judged by God: lost wars, natural disasters, murder, gangs, rape, drugs, divorce and so forth.

All sins and all evil stem from the murder of the unborn babies.

You see the moral collapse? You see the financial collapse?

You see the moral wasteland? Soon you will see a nuclear wasteland as China and Russia unleash their new ICBM’s from subs, bombers and land based triads. They are preparing the nuclear fire that will judge America. They probe us even now, and test their attack plans. Studies have been done: stories of Chinese nuclear war plans (Georgetown University students) and reports of Russian subs off our coast and the Gulf.

The fruit of abortion is nuclear war.

Pray as never before, study the lives of Lot, Noah and Daniel. I think deep in the heart of any spiritually aware person they know we have crossed the Rubicon. The lost will laugh at this message and their stupid blindness is only confirmaiton that what is written here is true. Anyone who would promote killing unborn babies is truly lost, evil and sick. There is not hope without turning to Jesus Christ, today, now.

The world is run by Satanic trillionaires, but they have no power against God’s plans. There is a way out for all those who repent and turn to God. Do so before it is too late. America is dying before our very eyes. This should free us from any false idols of money or a career. God is calling His people. Seek His face.

We don’t need God to destroy ourselves. We are very capable of doing that to ourselves. We have been altering the landscape of our world for 10,000 years, and we are on the cusp of reaping what we sow. Our civilization won’t be the first to be destroyed by climate change. The latest confirmed casualty of climate change was the Mayans.

i usually dont write in comments but this article forced me to. im sorry for ruining this america your talking about. i am a 15 yr old and i read this article and got extremely angry and slightly disappointed. YOU CANNOT MIX RELIGION INTO POLITICS, which is what youre doing. I agree with you that the new generation is more conservative and some policies need to be taking some time in the courts. But as part of the younger generation i strongly disagree with you on matter of abortion, gay rights, and illegal immigration. Why cant the little girl thats been raped by her father get an abortion for the baby that most likely has a life threatening birth defect? How can you, the religious person you obviously are, say that God will not love any gay, lesbian, transgender person as much as he loves any straight person? Why cant the illegal immigrant, that wanted a better future for his kids, be able to get a citizenship? So please before you go and write something like this, look at both sides. I understand what your saying to me but i want you to know that there are two sides to this argument, so know them before you make a stand.

The country is shifting to the left because the middle class is being eradicated by the pro business anti worker right wing GOP. And people finally see it.

  • Another Disgruntled American

What do you mean American political culture has shifted to the left? What happened to the radical revolutions and civil rights movements of the 1960s? Or all of the socialist politicians that were elected over half a century ago? Or the New Deal for God’s sake? We live in a country of more bigotry, xenophobia, and right-wing backlash than ever before. This organization contradicts itself–you state that workers’ wages are at an all time low percentage of the national GDP, and why? Because of the neoliberal, imperialist, and at the same time anti-American economic practices of the past decade, we have lowered the quality of life of the average American and pitted ourselves against each other–the gays, the “illegals,” and any other undesirables we can use as a scapegoat. It must be so hard to be an evangelical Christian these days now that someone is calling them out on their bigotry…

The culture war is not over because it never started–it is nothing but a social construct used to defend so-called “traditional” values, White privilege, heterosexism, and racism. It’s no more real than the American Dream, which has time and time again been used to keep the average worker thinking that the layoffs at his/her factory are their fault, to make us forget about the glass ceiling, and to trick us into believing that capitalism gives us all of the opportunities and freedoms that we think it does. It’s sad that no one vouches for socialism these days, or any other alternative to the current corporatocracy that we have in place. There were myriad alternatives that people presented decades ago, but since our political culture has shifted to the RIGHT (not to the left, as you falsely suggest), we are nothing short of brainwashed that the American Dream really exists–there’s a reason why we just call it a dream.

Anyway, enough of my ranting. I’m going to smoke a jay this afternoon because it’s my God-given right to do so, and no government can impose its moral standards or “traditional” values on me.

  • Another Disgruntled American
