55 Things About America You May Not Know

American Flag 2014 - Photo by HARRIS NewsIs America the greatest nation on the planet?  Before you answer that question, you might want to check out the statistics that I have shared in this article first.  The reality is that the United States is in a deep state of decline, and it is getting harder to deny that fact with each passing day.  Mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually and financially we are a train wreck.  Many that are “patriotic” attempt to put a happy face on our growing problems, but the truly patriotic thing to do is to admit just how bad things have gotten so that we can start finding solutions.  If you truly love this country, then you should know that this nation needs a huge wake up call.  We have abandoned the values and the principles that early Americans held so dear, and as a result our society is a giant mess.  The following are 55 things about America that you may not know…

#1 We are supposed to have a government “of the people, by the people, for the people”, but only 25 percent of all Americans know how long U.S. Senators are elected for (6 years), and only 20 percent of all Americans know how many U.S. senators there are.

#2 Americans spend more on health care per capita than anyone else in the world by far, and yet we only rank 35th in life expectancy.

#3 Only one state in the entire country has an obesity rate of under 20 percent.  11 states have an obesity rate of over 30 percent.

#4 Of all the major industrialized nations, America is the most obese.  Mexico is #2.

#5 Back in 1962, only 13 percent of all Americans were obese, but it is being projected that 42 percent of all Americans could be obese by the year 2030.

#6 According to a new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 31 percent of all food in the United States gets wasted.  In case you were wondering, that amounts to approximately 133 billion pounds of food a year.

#7 America has the highest incarceration rate and the largest total prison population in the entire world by a wide margin.

#8 In America, we even put 81-year-old women in prison for feeding the birds.

#9 According to a Newsweek survey taken a few years ago, 29 percent of all Americans could not even name the vice president.

#10 Americans spend more time sitting in traffic than anyone else in the world.

#11 60 percent of Americans report feeling “angry or irritable”.  Two years ago that number was at 50 percent.

#12 36 percent of Americans admit that they have yelled at a customer service agent during the past year.

#13 Incredibly, one survey found that 30 percent of all Americans cannot remember in what year the 9/11 attacks happened.

#14 There are more “deaths by reptile” in America than anywhere else in the world.

#15 Right now, 29 percent of all Americans under the age of 35 are living with their parents.

#16 Average SAT scores have been falling for years, and the level of education that our kids are receiving in most of our public schools is a total joke.

#17 According to a study conducted by the Mayo Clinic, nearly 70 percent of all Americans are on at least one prescription drug.  An astounding 20 percent of all Americans are on at least five prescription drugs.

#18 Americans spend more than 280 billion dollars on prescription drugs each year.

#19 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, doctors in the United States write more than 250 million prescriptions for antidepressants each year.

#20 Children in the United States are three times more likely to be prescribed antidepressants than children in Europe are.

#21 In the United States today, prescription painkillers kill more Americans than heroin and cocaine combined.

#22 America has the highest rate of illegal drug use on the entire planet.

#23 According to the federal government, the number of heroin addicts in the United States has more than doubled since 2002.

#24 It is hard to believe, but 56 percent of all Americans now have “subprime credit”.

#25 America exports more weapons to other countries than anyone else in the world.

#26 The United States has the most complicated tax system on the entire planet.

#27 Corruption is rampant throughout our society.  In fact, America leads the world in money given to fake charities.

#28 America leads the world in soft drink consumption by a wide margin.  Today, the average American drinks more than 600 sodas a year.

#29 In 2008, 53 percent of all Americans considered themselves to be “middle class”.  In 2014, only 44 percent of all Americans consider themselves to be “middle class”.

#30 70 percent of Americans do not “feel engaged or inspired at their jobs”.

#31 40 percent of all workers in the United States actually make less than what a full-time minimum wage worker made back in 1968 after you account for inflation.

#32 Back in the 1970s, about one out of every 50 Americans was on food stamps.  Today, about one out of every 6 Americans is on food stamps.

#33 The marriage rate in the United States has fallen to an all-time low.  Right now it is sitting at a yearly rate of 6.8 marriages per 1000 people.

#34 In the United States today, more than half of all couples “move in together” before they get married.

#35 America has the highest divorce rate in the world by a good margin.

#36 America has the highest percentage of one person households on the entire planet.

#37 100 years ago, 4.52 were living in the average U.S. household, but now the average U.S. household only consists of 2.59 people.

#38 According to the Pew Research Center, only 51 percent of all American adults are currently married.  Back in 1960, 72 percent of all adults in the United States were married.

#39 For women under the age of 30 in the United States, more than half of all babies are being born out of wedlock.

#40 At this point, approximately one out of every three children in the United States lives in a home without a father.

#41 In 1970, the average woman had her first child when she was 21.4 years old.  Now the average woman has her first child when she is 25.6 years old.

#42 America has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the world by a very wide margin.

#43 Approximately one out of every four teen girls in the United States has at least one sexually transmitted disease.

#44 America has the highest STD infection rate in the entire industrialized world.

#45 According to the latest figures released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, there are 20 million new sexually-transmitted infections in the United States every single year, and Americans in the 15 to 24-year-old age range account for approximately 50 percent of those new sexually-transmitted infections.

#46 As I wrote about recently, there are 747,408 registered sex offenders in the U.S. according to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

#47 America produces more pornography than any other nation in the world.

#48 America has the most lawyers per capita in the entire world.

#49 If you choose to be a “Constitutionalist” in America today, you may get labeled as a potential terrorist by the U.S. government.

#50 America has the largest national debt in the history of the world.  Back in 1980, the U.S. national debt was less than one trillion dollars.  Today, it is over 17 trillion dollars.

#51 According to the Congressional Budget Office, interest payments on the national debt will nearly quadruple over the next ten years.

#52 Americans spend more money on elections than anyone else does in the world by a very wide margin.

#53 65 percent of Americans are dissatisfied “with the U.S. system of government and its effectiveness”.  That is the highest level of dissatisfaction that Gallup has ever recorded.

#54 Only 8 percent of Americans believe that Congress is doing a “good” or “excellent” job.

#55 70 percent of Americans do not have confidence that the federal government will “make progress on the important problems and issues facing the country in 2014.”

#13 Only 30 percent of all Americans can tell you in what year the 9/11 attacks happened.

I have been reading these sites for over a year now. Almost nothing surprises me, and yet when I read this I audibly yelled “WHAT???” Then I clicked and found out that it was actually 30% of Americans that couldn’t remember the year, meaning that 70% could remember. In addition, the study was done in 2006, and most of the 30% that didn’t remember the year were elderly. I was 12 when the attacks happened and I didn’t think the World Trade Center had actually fallen down at first. After all, “that just doesn’t happen in America right?”

    • MichaelfromTheEconomicCollapse

Ooops – thanks for point that out.

“#48 America has the most lawyers per capita in the entire world”

Michael don’t you have a law degree. Were you a lawyer? I agree many lawyers are bad but if you left your practice what made you leave the profession? Great article this one just caught my eye.

    • JustMyOpinion

I am an American. Therefore, I have knowledge about being an American, and that puts one in an excellent position to speak on the topic. I appreciate that he acknowledged that fact.

    • MichaelfromTheEconomicCollapse

Yes, I was a lawyer. And I saw firsthand that we have way too many law schools pumping out way too many useless lawyers.

I greatly prefer what I am doing now, and I am glad that I escaped that rat race.

#32 Back in the 1970s, about one out of every 50 Americans was on food stamps. Today, about one out of every 6 Americans is on food stamps.

Boy, that socialist War on Poverty, which started a couple years earlier and has spent ~20 billion, was a real BARGAIN, wasn’t it!!

    • Gay Veteran

uh, the big increase in Americans on food stamps has happened since 2008.
and of course there wouldn’t be so many people on food stamps if the corporations hadn’t shipped millions of good American jobs to China, India, Mexico, etc.

  • we_have_one_that_can_see

i refuse to believe that the highest obesity rate is 30 percent, fat chance

    • Piglet

A couple of years ago my wife and I went down to Gatlinburg, TN, to visit the Great Smoky Mountains. My most vivid memory of the trip was how everyone, and I mean EVERY LAST PERSON, was at least obese, if not morbidly obese. A 30% obesity rate would have looked good there. Unfortunately that place is by no means unique and I see plenty of hog-bodies every day.

  • Eric Quintero

#36 America has the highest percentage of one person households on the entire planet.

We are a nation that is divided and compartmentalized. The war against the family unit has been a successful one it seems.

    • JustMyOpinion

By the time Americans work long hours and/or multiple jobs just to pay bills, then go to school in order to be considered “worthy” by society and employers, is there any time left for family?

      • MichaelfromTheEconomicCollapse

That is one of the great tragedies in America today.

        Michael

    • MichaelfromTheEconomicCollapse

It is true – the war on the family has been going on for a very long time and it has been very successful.

      Michael

      • Twisk

Michael, if I may, you forget the latest scandal brought about by the American tendency to the commodification of human relations (of everything, in fact), ie, the surrogacy that’s gaining ground in the country. The very worst thing about it is that the people are so narcissistic, so wrapped up in themselves, so degraded they can’t see anymore what’s wrong with the buying and selling of humans.
The last time America was that low was the slavery period!
Out of anencephalic progressivism and the cult of money-making, this country is on a staggering, unheard-of regressive slope.

#2-Is it possible that this is due to so many Americans being miserable and stressed as a result of extrememly demanding work and school schedules?

#3-Is this connected to Americans being miserable and unhealthy? How many Americans are so busy and tired that there is no time to grow or cook healthy foods? Also, what effect do GMO foods, food additives, food preservatives, etc. have on the American waistline?

    • laura m.

Agree, esp last comment. Men and women today would be best off not breeding, as America has no future anyway, high divorce rates now for decades and no time to devote to family or community as most have to work maybe two jobs, cook and clean, etc Men are better off not being tied to kids and finding a partner that wants to work and not stay home. Men get the short end of the stick in a divorce. Young people have no future unless they are born into wealth and given a good job..

    • wisefool

All throughout history those who want positions of power are those who prefer unrighteousness. A new nation is like a container of oil and water shaken up. The oil represents those who cling to evil. Eventually the oil will surface to the top, and that’s when it all falls apart.

    • alissa30

profiting off other’s misfortune is so totally American, complete loss of identity and family, tradition, values in this country and we are suffering bc of it. no one values anything of important now, just materialism greed fame wealth. It’s not who you are as a person it’s what you drive, what you wear, who you listen to, all these things shape our sad culture.

  • DJohn1

People in this country are all about the worship of money to the disregard of everything else.
Without money, people have to cope.
Our education system is supposed to prepare children for life. That means finding a job to support themselves. They have gotten an “F” in accomplishing that goal. They could not go out and find a job themselves, so how could they prepare our youth to find a job.
Our colleges prepare children by offering them credit to get an education that still doesn’t prepare them for life.
Our lawyers have set up a system where unmarried children have the advantage over wedded couples so you have a huge number of children without two parent households.
They penalise children that do marry the wrong person. It is an almost automatic bankruptcy if you need to get divorced from a person that makes your entire life a “hell on earth” situation.
The same rules penalise working people. Bums get alimony and child support without having to go to work for it. It works both ways.
Though the rules of the divorce court discriminate against men big time. As a result a lot of men gave up and do not work at all. If 75% of what you make goes to a woman that does not work and stays home to raise children then there is no real good answer because that is slavery for the male side of things. So they go on welfare and unemployment for long periods of time. That is a harsh judgement because no one wins. The woman, the children, the man are all left with nothing. The only real winner here is a judge and a lawyer or two have a job.
Our medical society is totally messed up. It is a worship of money plain and simple. The research against cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and many other conditions is all aimed at making cash cows of us for the rest of our lives.
No one can judge a situation from the outside because these people are intelligent, smart people, and they realised long ago that they do not make money curing disease. They make money by keeping people on a leash of drugs. I fully expect someone to kill anyone that disturbs that situation either in the courts or on the street.
Cancer is often lethal. It can go from a small tumor to a fatal disease in weeks. The drug companies have legalized the “cure” in chemotherapy as the only answer acceptable. They are worshipping money. It is the money that keeps it from being cured and a 50 billion dollar industry becoming unnecessary.
Chemo is equivalent to using leaches to draw blood to “cure” a problem. About 6% of advanced cancers are ever cured.
Yet we know of different methods. One being utilizing the immune system to target the tumors and get rid of them on a microscopic level. Cancer cells differ from normal cells in important ways.
That is common knowledge. Yet it does take a doctor to connect the dots and come up with cures. Most are penalized in the courts and attempts made to take away their licenses to practice medicine. So It is no wonder we have a mess in the medical practices of this country.
The penalty for research finding a cure is you put them out of a job if they succeed.
Our legal system is responsible for the large number of people in prisons. It basically penalizes people with no money to defend themselves with adequate lawyers in a court. It is a system based on how well off you are. Again this is worship of money.
Recently Rape cases have been in the news because we have a lot of innocent people convicted of rape in our jails that have been released on the basis of DNA evidence that they could not possibly have been guilty. Many of these people have spent years in jail and they were not guilty of anything except being in the wrong place at the right time. Often it is a matter of what color your skin is. Appearance being everything in a court of law. The average settlement is likely to be in the millions against the state courts that convicted them and the prosecutors that often with held evidence so they looked good in a court of law. It is a mess and I do not see it being resolved anywhere soon.
Misconduct by prosecuting attorneys is not brought to court and these people kicked out of the profession very often.
I agree with most of the article. I think it needed individual articles instead of a broad band of many subjects.
Medical malpractice is a subject all by itself worthy of an article.
    Legal malpractice is another one.
Our education system needs a complete overhaul. That is another subject that needs attention.

In Canada if one says homosexuality is a sin or Jesus is the only way to salvation the Human Rights Commission comes after them will full force, shuts them down, and seizes their assets. This is a thing that not even Hitler and the Nazis dared do. I’ll take everything on this list as long as I can openly share and learn the gospel. It is not that hard to move a little bit and avoid most sections of the grocery store.

      • John

My Hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness, I dare not trust the sweetest frame but WHOly trust in Jesus name Christ alone cornerstone, weak made strong in the saviors love, through the Storm he is Lord! Lord of All!!!
    God, Jesus LOVES YOU!!!!♥
Most assuredly I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. God loves us more than we can know, for this is the very reason Jesus came to die to take your place and die in your place, on the cross to take your sin upon himself and through his shed blood find life, forgiveness, and hope In Christ. For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. For He made him who knew no sin to be sin for us that through HIM we may become the righteousness of God. we must Repent ( turn away from have a change of mind about) of our sins, and put or full trust in what Jesus did for us on the Cross for our salvation. Paul wrote in Romans 10 That if you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart God raised him from the dead YOU WILL BE SAVED! For it is with the heart one believes unto righteousness and with the mouth one confesses unto salvation. For if anyone be in Christ he is a new creation old things have passed! Behold all things have become new!! For i am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of salvation for everyone who BELIEVES, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
For as in Adam all die, even so IN CHRIST all shall be made alive. TIME IS GETTING SHORT!!!! Please read your Bibles for Jesus said his coming would be as a snare upon all this world, and the signs of his coming are screaming at us today!!

    • Crysta

#37 100 years ago, 4.52 were living in the average U.S. household, but now the average U.S. household only consists of 2.59 people.

    • FirstGarden

The Naked Communist – a 1958 book by an ex FBI agent, United States author and faith-based political theorist Cleon Skousen.

The author posits and seeks to describe a geopolitical strategy by which the Marxist–Leninist Soviet Union was attempting to overcome and control all the governments of the world that were not members of the Communist bloc.

The list of communist goals contained in the book was read into the Congressional Record by U.S. Congressman Albert S. Herlong, Jr. of Florida, on January 10, 1963.

      • Gay Veteran

“…If Romney hasn’t read Skousen’s political philosophy, that’s probably for the best. His professor’s grand theory of American history was founded on a set of beliefs that had little to no basis in reality. He believed that the Founding Fathers were directly direct descendants of the Lost Tribes of Israel, whom he said had migrated to the British Isles—and that by extension, the Constitution was the direct descendant of the ruling system of the ancient Israelites. In Making of America, the textbook that Mickelson referenced in his conversation with Romney, Skousen quotes from an essay which argues that “one of the blessings of slavery” was that slaves’ marriages were fleeting, and suggests that being bought at auction improved slaves’ self worth. The real victims of slavery, the author suggested, were the white owners. The book also referred to black children as “pickaninnies”—which prompted lawmakers in California to block the text from being used in classrooms….”

        • FirstGarden

I agree with you that much of what appears above is ridiculous. The Boston tea was brewed too strongly. For instance, “the Constitution was the direct descendant of the ruling system of the ancient Israelites.”

In truth, the Constitution was the product of Christians, and some Freemasons, virtually all who were fed up with statist, elitist British rule.

But, having said that, let me point out that these positions, in and of themselves, do not make his 45 goals of Communism automatically untrue. Refuting the goals specifically would be far more credible than just using other things he said. Merely discrediting the messenger does not invalidate his message, in its entirety.
          Peace.

          • Gay Veteran

“…Refuting the goals specifically would be far more credible than just using other things he said….”

No, not a symmetrical one. Neither could they. But remember, this was in 1958 when a first strike on their installations might have taken out their ability to retaliate.. well, so the thinking goes. Patton wanted to keep on marching. It’s a very different situation today with the massive arsenals, ICBMs, nuke ships & subs.

actually the out of wedlock birth increase is a good sign, it means these women weren’t getting abortions, and regardless of why they were pregnant, they weren’t willing to make an asshole be a parent to their child, just to be technically proper. kid doesn’t have a father? hey, I would have been better off without the mother I had, and there are worse contexts than single parent families. step fathers are also more likely to molest or beat the kids, and if he is criminal subculture guess what the kid is going to be when he or she grows up?

Grow as much of your own food as possible, homeschool or do a homeschool co-op, look up and print out herb remedies (as the medical practice used to be before the AMA)…did anyone know the herb thyme has anti-bacterial properties? Grow some in an herb garden, when feeling ill put some thyme leaves in hot water and sip like a tea. Or rub a leaf on the skin for skin infections (works wonderful on acne). And that is just one herb! You can also put thyme essential oil in the little cup on top of a vaporizer, fill the bottom with water and breathe the steam for bronchial/lung infections.

We must use our smarts to find solutions. I hope I have provided a little info that will help someone. If you cant homeschool, at least have history “class” at home. You dont have to scare the children but they need to know history so they know what is going on in the world!

A lot of this is very tracable…

The Defunding of education, with the intent to “prove that public education doesnt work, and needs to be privatized” (Hint, private is codeword for unregulated)

Privatization of prisons, which are done UNDER CONTRACT (Hint, those contracts state that prisons will be kept 80-95% full AT ALL TIMES or the govt will incur penalties…) They build them, get them filled (illegally) and then use that to convince the people that we need more prisons, which just makes the problems bigger!

Income Inequality, this little bugger is one hell of a doozy… This can factor in VERY heavily in more than half the list… When you watch your paycheck mostly remain the same, as your costs rise, and of course watch the extravagance of the super wealthy, whos wealth just seems to keep skyrocketing up, of course you are going to be stressed, depressed, and looking for an out…

The fact remains, that decades ago, EVERY JOB (even the piss poor ones like fast food, menial labor, and office staff) paid a decent wage, often enough to supply an entire small family, and even enough to sometimes save up for a vacation, or a nice gift… Today however, those same low end jobs, are barely enough to even keep a family afloat, even if 3 or 4 jobs are worked! And good luck finding time or money for vacations, or leisure purchases!

The bulk of our money, has been scarfed up by the super rich, and squirreled away, and this leaves us with considerably less to be spread around, which just causes the US to print more, to make up the lack, which the rich just suck up again, and the problems just get worse and worse as “technically” there is a lot more money out there, so prices keep going higher and higher, but the actual money in the local economy remains much the same, so what little money the masses get, gets them less and less…

Add to this, the fact that food companies advertise and push heavily (especially price wise) the cheap bad for you food, which they push at you in larger and larger quantities, with less and less actual food content all the time, this is much of the source of “obesity”…

And back to money (goddess but this is taking a lot of the space…) guess where a lot of that stored cash goes? Thats right, politics! They use the money they pilfered from the American workers, to turn around and buy American politics, which they then turn around and use to further their own causes, AT OUR EXPENSE!
