24 Facts That Prove That America Is A Nation Of Slobs

What would our founders say if they could see us now?  Americans like to believe that the rest of the world looks up to us, but the truth is that the rest of the world is laughing at us.  It may be very difficult for us to admit, but the reality is that America has become a nation of slobs.  And I am not just talking about being overweight.  Today, Americans are physical, mental, emotional, moral, financial and political slobs.  We are addicted to entertainment, we are addicted to shopping, we are addicted to food, we are addicted to prescription drugs, and we are addicted to anything else that gives us the pleasure that we crave.  We allow our televisions to do our thinking for us and our families are falling apart.  Our lives center around pleasing ourselves, and we have become one of the most narcissistic societies in the history of the world.  We are like a middle-aged man that has totally let himself go.  You know the guy who shows up for an important event in sandals, sweatpants and a stained t-shirt?  That is us.  We are only a shadow of what we once were as a nation, and we desperately need to change course.

So what is the solution?

Well, just like any addict, the first thing that we need to do is to admit that there is  a problem.  Until we admit how dramatically we have fallen, we are never going to be ready to make the changes that are necessary.

And yes, we have fallen a long, long way as a country.

The following are 24 facts that prove that America is a nation of slobs….

#1 Right now, approximately 36 percent of all Americans are obese.  It is being projected that number will rise to 42 percent by 2030.

#2 Back in 1962, only 13 percent of all Americans were obese.

#3 Medical costs related to obesity in the United States are estimated to be approximately $147 billion a year.

#4 All over America, our infrastructure is crumbling.  For example, in the most populated county in Alabama potholes the size of pizzas now litter the roads.

#5 The average American family purchases 200 pounds of meat per family member each year.

#6 Large numbers of cows that are killed for hamburger meat in America stand ankle-deep in their own manure all day long.

#7 The average American watches 28 hours of television every week.

#8 U.S. corporations sell more fast food and more soda than anyone else in the world by a very wide margin.

#9 The average American drinks more than 600 sodas every single year.  That is by far the most in the world.

#10 Of all the major industrialized nations, America is the most obese.  Mexico is in second place.

#11 Americans take more prescription drugs than anyone else on the planet.

#12 The United States has the highest rate of illegal drug use in the entire world.

#13 According to the Pew Research Center, only 51 percent of all Americans that are at least 18 years old are currently married.  Back in 1960, 72 percent of all U.S. adults were married.

#14 The United States has the highest divorce rate in the world by a very wide margin.

#15 According to one study, one out of every four teen girls in the United States has at least one sexually transmitted disease.

#16 The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate on the entire globe.

#17 The United States has the highest child abuse death rate on the entire globe.

#18 The United States produces more pornography than any other nation has in the history of the world.

#19 One survey found that an astounding 30 percent of all Internet traffic now goes to pornography websites.

#20 Consumer debt in America has increased by a staggering 1700% since 1971.

#21 There is more credit card debt in America than anywhere else in the world.

#22 There is more mortgage debt in America than anywhere else in the world.

#23 There is more student loan debt in America than anywhere else in the world.

#24 Nobody in the world gets more plastic surgery done than Americans do.

Have you read enough?

For even more signs that America is becoming a nation of slobs, you can check out one of my recent articles entitled “16 Signs That People Are Becoming Stupider“.

The sad truth is that this nation is a complete and total mess and the decline is accelerating.

Many want to blame our politicians for all of our problems, but replacing all of our politicians would not fix any of the things listed above.

Yes, we definitely need different leadership, but each one of us also needs to look into our own hearts.

It is not just the government that needs to change.

The American people need to change as well.

So what do you think about this article?

Am I being too harsh on the American people?

Am I not being harsh enough?

Well, none of this is new. The American economy is built on consumption. The truth is that we as human beings don’t really need much to survive. A huge percentage of the world survives on a few dollars a day. What we have today in America in is extremely unnatural. Corporations create the desire for items that have no real value outside of our minds. There is no reason why kids should be killing each other over sneakers that cost $5 to make by slave labor in China. We are massively brainwashed as society to desire things that we have no real need for. There is a big stink about the evil 1% in America who are a bunch of greedy slobs who horde massive amounts of wealth. But the truth is that even the poorest people in America are the 1% compared to the rest of the world. Many notoriously dangerous ghetto areas in America are actually beautiful places with large well-maintained homes with long driveways and big front lawns. When the ghetto people move out, property values jump astronomically in newly gentrified cities. Compton, Oakland and even Detroit have many huge houses in the worst areas. Although even most American ghettos are much richer than ghettos in the third world, American ghettos are statistically equally, or more, violent as these much more impoverished foreign locales. It is the mentality of many Americans that makes these places dangerous. We don’t want just one pair of shoes or one pair of pants. We all want to live lives of excess, luxury and decadence. This is why expensive American luxury brands like Polo Ralph Lauren are popular from the country club to the projects. We don’t want to put in a hard day’s work with our hands because why should we when rich people don’t do that. Working hard for a humble day’s wage is for illegal Mexicans and losers. Everyone wants to live like the rich in America. Everyone going to college is evidence of this. The care-free binge-drinking lifestyle of the shiftless college student was once only reserved for the elite. Today, this lifestyle is pushed as the norm for our young adults. Doing whatever it takes to make big bucks is the name of the game in America even if it means hurting people and poisoning entire communities. People who sell hard drugs in American inner cities are no different from wealthy alcohol companies who market their toxic swill to people. Except the moneyed class of big corporations, banks and extremely rich people who oppress people to make money are rarely caught or brought to justice. Yes, we Americans have been sold out by this gentry class, but average Americans, too, are to blame for some of it.

    • mondobeyondo

Yes, pretty much our entire society is based on consumption. We are the best at the world at it.

iPads. iPods. Laptops. Clothes. Black Friday. Christmas. 4th of July. Memorial Day. Honor our soldiers by buying a brand new Ford! No interest until 2015!

Buy, buy, buy, buy, buy, and when you run out of money, keep buying.

Add flour and sugar, and you have a recipe for debt. Is it any wonder we’re in the trouble we’re in?

    • Tatiana Covington

All economies are built on consumption, which always drives purchase and trade. We must consume. Otherwise we starve to death.

This was true when we were first starting to chip flints. This will be true when we finish terraforming Venus and Mars.

  • Tatiana Covington

God Bless the U.S.A.! Only the free and rich get to be slobs.

Besides, ere long the robots will be doing everything. Including fighting. So there go bravery and honor, as obsolete as the Edison wax cylinder.

    • Kev

Is that a vacuum cleaner Tatania?

      • Kev

        Sorry,Tatiana.(Typo)

  • Colin

I am puzzled, are you saying that overweight people in Alabama are causing potholes, and the reason that the infrastructure in our country is crumbling is because of all the overweight people?

    • Michael

No, the potholes are just another sign of how slothful we are becoming.

      Michael

      • Gary2

I think the potholes are a gign that we are not taxing the rich hard enough to pay for these needed infastructure repairs.

        Go France!!

        • Sunshine

What happened with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act? Weren’t we supposed to have shovel ready jobs with that to fill in those potholes?
OH! Who knew that was/is being blown away in research on geoengineering the climate? I rather liked our weather the way nature intended without the aerosols in the atmosphere. Trees, the lungs of the planet, I think would agree.
“Through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science received $1.2 billion, with $60 million allocated to the ARM Climate Research Facility.”
          http://www.arm.gov/about/recovery-act

        • Jerry

Obama needed more stimulus money to fix the potholes…$800 BILLION wasn’t enough! Well, as the annointed one snickered “guess those jobs weren’t as shovel ready as we thought.”

      • Colin

I disagree. I think our infrastructure is not in the shape it is in because of sloth. I think it is because our politicians prioritize the wrong things when they should be prioritizing the right things, and by not identifying that maintaining our infrastructure is essential to our national security.

Cows standing in mud and manure where they are fed in the winter doesn’t hurt them at all. It washes right off when they cross a creek that is already brown with mud fron the winter rains. Anyhow yuou skin a cow and the dirt or whatever does not get on the meat. I don’t eat the hoof. I might be overweight and I do like to eat good food. Yesterday I took advantage of the real low tide from the moon being so close to dig clams. Those nice big clams sure are good and I caught 22 crabs too. Then stopped off and picked up oysters and scallops. Going to have a bunch of friends over to eat a feast. That is not being a slob to me, just having a good time. I can’t be all bad as I don’t have any debt and I stay far away from porn. I might drink a soda once or twice a month. Never been divorced and I’m not a pregnant teen, too old and the wrong sex. I do like bibs and teeshirts, but I do wear a suit and tie to Church. Well I should point out that the ones that spend all that money on plastic surgery care too much on how good they look to be slobs.

    • Gary2

dude–you caught crabs?? I would not be bragging about this.

  • Gary2

Michael–is that you on the bed with all the cash??

    • Gary2

PS–If that’s you in the bottom picture you may want to consider a diet. :)

      • Michael

Nope, that is not me. :)

        Michael

    • Michael

Nope, that is not me either. :)

      Michael

    • mondobeyondo

It’s not me either, but I wouldn’t mind having that guy’s cash. :)

  • Gary2

Michael–it seems to me that most of the problems are caused by people being selfish and only thinking of them selves. There is a profound lack of empathy and the emotional intelligence in a lot of people is non-existent. I think much of the selfishness is related to the importance we in America put on the individual. There is such a big “I” focus as opposed to a more “We”.

My perception is that a lot of people on the right use the word “I” a lot where as those of us on the left use “We” more often.

    • Kev

Wise words Gary, research the Tavistock Institute for Human Relations. They have promoted behavioural change and long term conditioning.Their targets are,Nation state,Family, religion (Christianity) and Marriage. Are they winning? Look around.

    • Graham

      Gary2:

You have just hit two “key” words right on the nail.

      “Emotional Intelligence”

  • BeenThere

No you are not being too harsh. As you said, the addict needs to face up to their problem before any cure can begin. Unfortunately, America has exported it’s problems to other parts of the world. Most Western countries are experiencing the same things you detail here because of the export not of Americans but of American culture. Best wishes in your attempts to turn this around but there sure is a long way to go.

  • N S Dahiya

What a tragedy! A nation that had it made, abundant resources, limitless farmland, industrious population, and no proximate enemies. And this is what it does to itself. And American leaders would have the people believe that they are hated for their freedoms. America isn’t free, it’s gone horribly sick, politically, socially, and economically.

    • mondobeyondo

“My country ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing…”

I’ve stopped singing – better to chirp the reality that’s out there.

  • Reality

It’s because most Americans are ignorant, greedy, religious fundamentalists that sit around watching propaganda news programs. The obedient sheep slaves love their chains. Come on Proles chant what you’ve been brainwashed into thinking “WAR IS PEACE,” “FREEDOM IS SLAVERY,” “IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH”. Party politics and elections are nothing more than the new bread and circuses and like Rome, we will fall. It amazing how many people think with hard work they will someday get rich and retire but the truth is none of you will ever join the 1%. It’s a pipe dream to keep the ignorant wage slaves from revolting. If you are not retiring within 5 years you will work till the day you drop dead. Everything is fine, nothing to see here, Have a nice day:)

    • Gary2

As more proof you are correct–I saw a survey (sorry I do not remember the source) that said 19% of Americans thought they were in the top 1% of income and wealth distribution. The number of folks who think they will soon be the “Haves” yet fail to see they will in reality remain “Never Wills” is truley astounding.

  • Mainuh1

    Sheer gluttony on all fronts.

  • tommcd

The amount of meat that an American family purchases, or the amount of pornography that someone watches, are not “problems” that need to be “fixed”.
As humans become more affluent they purchase more expensive food and entertainment. This has been true for all of human history. Americans are not the only people around the world who are eating more meat or watching pornography. Condemning pornography however is a uniquely American puritanical affair!

    • Gary2

so then they are eating steak as they watch porn???

  • Uncredit Worthy

The Lord’s Prayer can help divide and conquer consumer debt. Yes, we can end endless error.

#21 There is more credit card debt in America than anywhere else in the world.

#22 There is more mortgage debt in America than anywhere else in the world.

#23 There is more student loan debt in America than anywhere else in the world.

  • WarriorClass III

What they fail to mention is that with all the sugars and GMO food and drugs (in the food supply) they force on the population it is virtually impossible not to get fat unless you grow your own food. Even eating “right” will not do it since the veggies and meat is all contaminated and has no nutrients. And of course they are trying to outlaw supplements so you can’t get the nutrients you need to stay healthy. This is planned obesity, folks. It’s all part of the slow kill. All you can do is try to stick with organically grown veggies and free range beef and chicken, and supplement that with vitamins and exercise. It’s more expensive, but what is your health worth? You can’t fight back if you are sick and fat.

    • Michael

Yes, that is a very good point about how our food is made.

      Michael

      • Michelle

Yes, our food supply has been changed DRASTICALLY since the 1940s. If we were eating as they ate…more natural, less processed foods….alot of the diabetes and obesity would not exist. But our culture is not the same as back then, and there is no going back.
When you both work, who has time for growing, canning, and cooking? Order a pizza.
        Sad.

  • Lisa

The only way to solve these problems is to put God back into your life. We have become such a Godless country full of disgusting sin!!!! HE will deal with us very very soon!

    • Klem

I do not see how getting God back in my will fix potholes, make my ass less flabby and modify what’s in the food I purchase…. Invoking a supernatural being to solve rationnal real world problems has never worked and never will.

God will not change the world for the better on Its/His/Her own… Only Humans will, maybe with His help (I conceed you that). And if God created Man to his own image, does that imply that *************?

  • Kevin

Over time the people have adopted an attitude of “Live for today”. To a large degree it is fueled by the ability to do so and be sheltered from the outcome of poor decisions. Mom, Dad and Government overly protect you and shelter you. Easy credit gives you the ability.

  • Debbie

The moral fiber of the United States is basically gone. As a former high school teacher I was dismayed
about the total disrespect of teachers and anyone in authority. People say that teachers are important
but over the past 20 years the teaching profession as been the lowest on the totem pole. I could not believe the caliber of parents that we have today raising children. If this is going to be the future of
America I am afraid.I had very high standards for my students, but when I tryed to implement them I was
met with resistance from the administration, parents, and board of education. After 33 years I had enough
and retired last July. When I visit other countries education and teachers are held in high esteem.Americans are getting lazier,self-centered,and greedy. There seems to be no respect for the follow man. Can we continue to survive like this?

    • Kev

The Stanford Institute may be worth investigating Debbie. From there you will be led to 30 Tabernacle street in good old London Town.Dig deep. But hold your nose whilst doing so.

  • Pastor Glenn

Well, sadly, it is true – and the fact that many of Western ‘sillivization’s’ nations are right behind us is no comfort at all.

You forgot to mention the underlying factor of why all of this is, Michael.

We’re spiritual slobs, for the most part. Go read Dimitru Duduman’s book “Through the Fire Without Burning” and compare his life as a Christian in communist Romania to what Americans and westerners act like spiritually speaking, and you’ll see all you need to understand.

As for narcissism, well that reflects perfectly in the “leader” we as a nation have selected for ourselves, doesn’t it?

How to fix it? At this point, it’s going to take a miracle. Truly.

    • Michael

      Pastor Glenn:

I have read “Through the Fire Without Burning“. It is a great book and I highly recommend it for everyone.

Also people should check out the work of his grandson, Michael Boldea.

      Michael

Sadly this article hits the nail on the head. Stats? Just sit down and people watch and see the truth to all of the statements in this article. We have become morally corrupt! The most truthful and hard hitting statement is this article is that each and everyone of us needs to take a long hard look in the mirror and search our own heart to see if we can’t make some serious changes, one person at a time, starting with SELF.

  • William

This is NOT by accident. Adam Weishaupt set up the basic tools to be used to destroy the world for the rule of the Illuminati over two centuries ago. As for America, if one REFUSES to examine FACTS, then they are DOOMED! Americans simply REFUSE, in large part, to accept FACTS!

    • Kev

Edward Bernays and John Rawlings-rees did way more damage.

  • El Pollo de Oro

Michael T. Snyder writes: “Americans like to believe that the rest of the world looks up to us, but the truth is that the rest of the world is laughing at us.” Having done a lot of traveling outside of The Banana Republic of America (formerly the USA) and visited about 15 different countries, I can state without hesitation that Michael is absolutely correct. The rest of the developed world (if you can still call this a developed country) sees the BRA as a collapsing empire that is in serious decline on so many levels.

It wasn’t always that way. I was recently watching an old Italian comedy from 1954 called “Un Americano a Roma,” which was about an italiano who looked up to the USA so much that he became downright buffoonish in his attempts to act American. A few years after that, Italian singer Renato Carosone had a big hit with a song called “Tu Vuo Fare l’Americano,” which poked fun at post-War italiani who were obsessed with Americana and wanted to emulate us as much as they could. In those days, this country was looked up to. The USA was a symbol of hope and opportunity. But now, it is a symbol of rot and decay. Now, the BRA is synonymous with an ever-abusive police state, a crumbling infrastructure, a currency that’s in peril, a dying middle class, violent crime, a wretched nightmare of a health insurance system, widespread poverty that is getting worse by the minute, schools closing, bailouts, and a massive federal deficit. Back in 2009, I hung out with a well-to-do Australian businessman who was avoiding the U.S. dollar like the plague; that right there says it all.

Michael mentions “the guy who shows up for an important event in sandals, sweatpants and a stained t-shirt.” Whenever I’m in Europe and see someone dressed like that, he usually has an American accent and is about 50 pounds overweight. On top of that, he’s usually the same asshole who is upset because someone speaks to him in Italian in Rome or in French in Brussels. Embarrassing.

“It is becoming increasingly impossible in America to get a good job without being connected to the system that serves the elites.”—Paul Craig Roberts

“Los Estados Unidos is turning into a banana republic.”—Gerald Celente

“Capitalism should not be condemned, since we haven’t had capitalism.”—Ron Paul

“I don’t think people realize just how evil and what an abomination our country has become.”—Alex Jones

“We are headed straight for a military dictatorship in this country, but it isn’t too late to fight back.”—Justin Raimondo

“I’ll show you America: terminal, crazy and mean.” ― Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America”

Neocon imperialists love to run around screaming about “American exceptionalism,” but the reality is that The Banana Republic of America is exceptionally broken. And the true patriots are not the flag-waving neocon imperialists, but rather, people like Ron Paul, Gerald Celente, Alex Jones, Paul Craig Roberts, Katherine Albrecht and Justin Raimondo (AntiWar.com). They’re the ones who are smart enough to realize that we’re in serious trouble and that instead of invading foreign countries, we need to worry about trying to fix things at home.

Welcome to the fall of the Roman Empire. Welcome to The Banana Republic of America, collapsing empire of the Third World. Che dio ci aiuti.

    • mondobeyondo

The sandals, sweatpants and stained T-shirt might be appropriate attire on a European beach – maybe (and even then, I have my doubts..!!) But definitely NOT for any kind of professional setting.

      • El Pollo de Oro

In some cases, the attire I saw on the beaches in Barcelona consisted of nothing more than a birthday suit (on a Barcelona beach, a bikini is considered modest attire). Visca Catalunya!

  • Patrick

You are so right! I hope and wish that many people could awake with articles like this one. You have stated nothing but the truth. Another thing that´s very sad and tragic is that several countries take United States as a model country and as a example to be followed, such as Mexico and other countries. The copy and try to do the things that do their neighbor U.S. Also, all this crap ends in Mexico, and also Mexico is a faithful servant or should I say slave of U.S. always following orders and instructions in a way that is secret to its people, even the candidate who gets to be president and how to run the country (Mexico) is by following orders of U.S. So sad all of this.
I pray for a revival in the U.S. Only a true revival with the true gospel proclaimed and restated by the Reform in 16 century… We need to go back to the Bible and God. Soli Deo Gloria

    • Klem

“We need to go back to the Bible and God”

Considering the disastrous consequences it had for 400 years in Europe, I can assure you that you do not want to go down that road. As I said before, Relying on a supernatural being to solve rational real world problem does not work and never will….

Look at Afghanistan since the last 10 years, they went back to their God and their Gospel….how do you feel about the results?

  • deborah

You are not being harsh enough. You have left out the fact that very few people have manners, too many people spoil their children and think that it is “cute” and we have very little respect or regard for each other anymore. I used to wonder what it was that I found so charming about old movies. I have recently come to the understanding that it is the respect that people spoke to each other with as a rule in the “old days”. It was in our language. Now we as a country have little respect for others and more importantly, little respect for ourselves.

    • Tim

      Deborah,

You are absolutely right. I forgot to mention this in my comment. Many of my teenage neighbors have no respect for others. Just the other day one of them said something terrible to me. I was in my own yard minding my own business. He was walking up the street to meet someone who was parked at the end of the street. I believe he was going to buy drugs.

Another neighbor has been in and out of the county detention center on drug charges. Frankly, this kid frightens me because he is absolutely lawless. He’s Jordanian, but he looks like a member of a Mexican drug cartel. Most of his upper body is covered in tattoos. His mother is always running him out of the house, yelling in her native language. It’s really bizarre to listen to.

Another teenage neighbor used to post his recreational drug activities on his Twitter account allowing anyone with internet access to read it. Smart! I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets high inside his house with his parents’ knowledge as his mother sometimes looks like she’s high.

    • Michelle

Can’t believe how many young parents say “I’m not going to make my children work as hard as I had to growing up”
They are doing them (and society) a disservice.

  • Alan

You are so right. Also Americans are taught to submit to social class systems. Very unconstitutional!! Should you disagree with a doctor, scientist, or anyone with a PHD, you are immediately marginalized, mocked, and scoffed at by intellectual tyrants by reason of your education. When the fact is that in most formal education free thinking is frowned upon and indoctrination into foolish Darwinism, the big bang, and every Godless form of idolatry is the norm. As for obesity, there is so much slow poison in food to the point of contamination of our food supply. Hexane in soy bean oil at the top of the pollutant list. It is in so many foods and is the primary cause of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

  • http://www.declaringthywordministries.com Phil Stallings

    The plain truth!

  • Chris

We are only a shadow of what we once were as a nation, and we desperately need to change course.

Well a change of course is coming but I’m not sure it’ll be what you want. Think gulags, slave labour and few possessions. That might sum it up. And that’s for the ones that choose to be part of it and live.

  • http://stopneocons.bravejournal.com Winston Smith

Not harsh at all, what it is-and arrogance would add too. US always felt they had all the answers and knows best, even at point of gun will make people be like US

  • joseph

the picture of the slob at the bottom pretty much sums up the U.S.S.A! fat ,lazy, loss of competetiveness, complacency, brain washed by television…….the list goes on!

  • Cinderella Man

Hmmm America is obese! Really no kidding being since the fact we have GMO corn in our diets since 1996 and Mexico is a large consumer of corn products no wonder we are 1 and 2. Also take into account that we demand cheap food and we could really care less where it comes from and how its produced. America is a decaying empire and most of us are just too comsumed with food, sex and entertainment to care about anything but ourselves. There is a change in the wind though, folks happy sparkly time is almost over. Time to get off your fat ass and start fighting for something besides who has the TV remote!!

  • Tim

“#1 Right now, approximately 36 percent of all Americans are obese. It is being projected that number will rise to 42 percent by 2030.”

Yeah, this is confirmed whenever I go out in public. For example, I recently went to Pep Boys to have my car serviced. After I told the man at the service desk what I needed done and gave him the key to my car, I went to the customer waiting area and sat down. There was a woman there who was just HUGE. I became restless after a while, so I got up to look around the store. While I was browsing, a man and a woman came into the store. The man was slim but the woman must have been close to 400 lbs.

“#6 Large numbers of cows that are killed for hamburger meat in America stand ankle-deep in their own manure all day long.

A lot of the meat that is consumed by Americans is raised in Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) and is very unhealthy. However, meat and dairy from animals raised on pasture is very healthy.

“#9 The average American drinks more than 600 sodas every single year. That is by far the most in the world.”

Most sodas are sweetened with High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). According to a recent article by Dr. Mercola, fructose is metabolized much like alcohol and causes metabolic dysfunction. Is it any wonder that rates of obesity and diabetes are so high?

“#12 The United States has the highest rate of illegal drug use in the entire world.”

I don’t doubt this stat at all. Many of my neighbors are teenagers, and most of them are on drugs. And it seems that the local news is always reporting about a Meth lab that was busted. Yeah, down here in the so-called Bible Belt. Why anyone would use Meth is beyond me. When I see what it does to a person I shutter.

“#18 The United States produces more pornography than any other nation has in the history of the world.”

Is it any wonder that the divorce rate in this nation is so high? Women don’t want to be treated the way they’re treated in pornographic films. What’s depicted in that filth is not love. It’s abuse. Enough said.

“#20 Consumer debt in America has increased by a staggering 1700% since 1971.”

Yeah, the same year the Dollar’s last ties to gold were severed. The party’s coming to an end.

  • http://prophecyupdate john

While your list of self destruction is true, it is by far incomplete. If we could pull ourselves away from the internet long enough to see an even greater threat, we only have to go as far as the T.V. to see the unbelievable emphasis placed on all sports. One of the reasons for Rome’s demise was that too much time was placed on sports and of course (not forgetting ) the unions and entitlements. The people got sloppy, lazy and self serving and expected someone else to work and think for them. We were a once great nation. We do not need illegals cutting our grass. We need a government body that’s sworn to uphold the constitution and be held accountable as a treasonous act if they don’t and much if not all of the current national problems would be diminished or gone.

  • Magdiel

As always Michael, you have declared things the way they are. There is no doubt about something,in order for the government to change for the better the people has to change for the better first, after all,who put them right there in office but the people? As I read the History of Rome,I can find more and more similarities between ancient Rome near the time of its collapse and modern America. They were addicted to entertainment (gladiatorial shows, horse races, etc.) as we are today (UFC,MMA,Boxing,NASCAR,etc, etc.) They were sexually immoral (cities like Rome,Pompeii, and others, had plenty of brothels and whore-houses) just like we are today (Las Vegas, escort services, etc. etc…) The Roman government had awfully great amounts of debts, obviously America is in the same situation. I could make this list a lot bigger, but I just wanted to give an idea of where we are standing right now,and unfortunately,it is not solid ground. If we continue this course,we are DOOMED!!

  • Joe

You are sadly CORRECT! You can blame the commie-libs for the failing of society and the family entirely since the 1960′s.

    • VerdiLowe

Don’t blame the tame commie-libs from the 1960′s…It all started much earlier & all far more sinister than we realise.
Check out The 1923 School of Frankfurt…a cabal of all the creepy loony lefties from Europe & America, who have determined the gradual disintegration of all Western institutions.
To further the advance of their ‘quiet’ cultural revolution – but giving us no ideas about their plans for the future – the School recommended (among other things):

      1. The creation of racism offences.
      2. Continual change to create confusion
      3. The teaching of sex and homosexuality to children
      4. The undermining of schools’ and teachers’ authority
      5. Huge immigration to destroy identity.
      6. The promotion of excessive drinking
      7. Emptying of churches
      8. An unreliable legal system with bias against victims of crime
      9. Dependency on the state or state benefits
      10. Control and dumbing down of media
      11. Encouraging the breakdown of the family

One of the main ideas of the Frankfurt School was to exploit Freud’s idea of ‘pansexualism’ – the search for pleasure, the exploitation of the differences between the sexes, the overthrowing of traditional relationships between men and women. To further their aims they would:

      • attack the authority of the father, deny the specific roles of father and mother, and wrest away from families their rights as primary educators of their children.
      • abolish differences in the education of boys and girls
      • abolish all forms of male dominance – hence the presence of women in the armed forces
      • declare women to be an ‘oppressed class’ and men as ‘oppressors’
Munzenberg summed up the Frankfurt School’s long-term operation thus: ‘We will make the West so corrupt that it stinks.’

  • Matt B.

    Mike,

You’ve been on a roll lately. Great work!

It’s extremely hard seeing examples of this country’s moral decline everywhere you go.

I’m fortunate to have “woken up” to the technocratic Elitist agenda years ago and that realization has absolutely changed my life. Since my “awakening” I’ve become immune to statist propaganda, stopped watching television, I’ve put more value on my health, my diet, my music, who I spend time with, ect.

But even I’m not perfect; I’ve recently been coming to terms with my alcohol abuse and it’s been extremely hard for me to change the way I operate daily.

What I’ve figured out is that life is an ongoing battle and what makes life worth it is bettering yourself, defeating those obstacles and being proud of your successes.

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • Robin

I’m fortunate enough to know the older generation of Americans who retired to England. Well mannered, very polite, an example to every human being. They don’t have many kind words to say about their own country and folk. Laughing with sadness from a distance.

  • Matthew

All I can say is that we as a country are in our teenage stage we are still young and have many more mistakes to make before we grow to maturity … I just hope we make it through it and grow up before we are no longer a super power! We all need more pride and less arrogance!

  • El Pollo de Oro

Here’s another one: The Banana Republic of America incarcerates, per capita, more people than any other developed country (if you can still consider us a developed country). The Prison/Industrial Complex is a major growth industry; privatized prisons have high inmate quotas, and the prison lobby has a lot of influence on politicians and on our kangaroo courts (thus inspiring our kangaroo courts to railroad as many appeal as possible for nonviolent offenses). But does that mean that American cities are safe? Hell no. BRA cities are some of the most violent on the planet.

Alex Jones, one of my favorite right-wing libertarian commentators, put it best when he said: “I don’t think people realize just how evil and what an abomination our country has become.”

  • Georgiaboy61

Re: “It is not just the government that needs to change. The American people need to change as well….Am I being too harsh on the American people?”
John Adams, the second President of the United States, said “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” Benjamin Franklin provided the other bookend to this line of thought, “As nations become more corrupt and vicious, they have more need of masters” and “Laws without morals are in vain.” These wise men were telling us that the basis of our freedom lies in ourselves, in winning the struggle each person must wage to become a virtuous individual. If enough people become corrupt and lose virtue, it is only a matter of time before our political institutions themselves are corrupted. Absent the checks upon our baser natures provided by strong character and moral development, human beings will – as Franklin and Adams noted – turn to external restraints upon their vices, appetites and flaws. When the law proves insufficient to control them, they will turn to the strong man figure – who, as a tyrant, will be only too happy to rule over them.

  • Brontemilan

Just got back from the States and had a great time. To be contrary to what some people are saying, it seemed to me that the more secular and educated people were the thinner they were. The more fundamentalist Christian they were the fatter they were. I was surprised to find how physically unatractive people were in general there.

    • http://urbansurvivalguidesecrets.com Urban Survival Guide

Your comment begs the question… what state(s) did you visit?

And what country are you from, where the majority of people are educated, thin and physically attractive?

To say that ‘the more fundamentalist Christian they were the fatter they were’ is just idiotic.

Did you interview all of these people to assess their beliefs?

    • El Pollo de Oro

Brontemilan: Here in The Banana Republic of America, there is a definite correlation between size and income level. I live in Philadelphia, where folks tend to be thinner, more fit and more attractive in the upscale parts of town (such as Rittenhouse Square and Olde City) but are more likely to be overweight or morbidly obese in the poorer neighborhoods. Poverty is getting worse and worse in the BRA; so is our obesity epidemic. The BRA in 2012 = widespread poverty, lack of hope, high unemployment and high underemployment, unhealthy diets, inadequate health care, morbid obesity, and a lot of broken-down slobs running around in ugly gray sweatpants. Remember: jeans are way too dressy for many Americans, whose wardrobe consists of sweatpants and more sweatpants.

  • mondobeyondo

Indeed, we are exactly that – a nation of slobs.

Most of my generation wouldn’t dream of going to a job interview in Bermuda shorts or jeans, flip flops and a T-shirt. We dressed professionally, because it’s true, you don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. These days, anything goes.

If you did get hired, you were expected to dress professionally as well, especially if it was an office job, and ESPECIALLY if it was in the executive or legal field. Maybe it started with “Casual Friday”, then “casual every day of the week”.

So many people have no pride or self-respect anymore. It’s pathetic.

    • El Pollo de Oro

Just this morning, I was walking around my Philly neighborhood in jeans and a black button-down short sleeve dress shirt—kind of what folks in the tech field consider “business casual.” And I felt overdressed.

  • mondobeyondo

It’s obvious from looking at the above stats, that our nation has made vast improvements since the antiquated, prehistoric 1960′s and 1970′s. What a backwards society we were back then. So many people getting married in 1962. Shame they never heard of “cohabitation” and gay marriage then. We’ve advanced so far!

    (*tongue in cheek, of course*)

    • http://usconcealedcarrytraining.com Concealed Carry Training

Hey Atlas, I was thinking the same thing when I read the article.

If the average American drinks more than 600 sodas every single year, then someone is drinking 1,200 to make up for my 0 :-P

    • Tim

  • Graham

That second picture looks like a beached whale! What a “GuttBucket”.

Re the video link (ad) below it, so glad I make the effort to get out regularly and mountain bike, hillwalk, walk. Scotland is ideal for all three, despite the wettish climate and summer “midges”. When the skies are clear, it is great for fresh air and scenery. Doesn’t beat the Alps though, although we have a “mini” version of them near Loch Lomond (Arrochar Alps).

  • John Doe

Blaming Americans for things like this is like blaming ordinary people for the destruction of the environment. These stats are no mistake, they are the ongoing consequences of deliberate plans and actions by the powers that be.
Ordinary people follow where they are led. It is those doing the leading who are to blame.

  • Andrew

    #25 countless sects…

  • Overweight American Woman

Don’t blame Americans for being fat.

Do you realize what they have done to the food?

Do you realize poorer people have a harder time accessing nutritious good food?

Do you realize that high cortisol levels [which cause obesity] are elevated by stress?

Do you realize that they use MSG ON PURPOSE to FATTEN RATS in the LAB? That this is a known lab technique for instantly obese rats? I looked it up and it’s true, so why is MSG in great amounts added to all our processed food?

Do you realize that high fructose corn syrup was used to fatten livestock before they decided to start pouring that one into every food they could find, even canned spaghetti sauce?

Why are growth hormones outlawed in so many other nations and not in America?[the same chemicals used to fatten the livestock, END UP IN US.

Did you know they use antibiotics to fatten up cattle?

They have done studies in some sectors, speaking of the chemical obesogens that are throughtout our society, animals and babies–have grown fatter:

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/life/health/new-health/conditions/obesity/are-chemicals-not-calories-making-us-fat/article2297775/

This is a good website, please do not buy the corporate-industrial lies about obesity. They are fattening us up on purpose and ignoring other factors.

The whole world claims Americans are fat because they are lazy, sloths, etc, but whenever the corporations move in elsewhere, people gain weight…

    so think about that one.

    Please post this.

I agree with your other comments, but people are trapped in the system. Too many of us bought the lies while we woke up later and realized we got sold nonsense. I would stuck to a rural life or obtained one, etc.

Now I’m too poor to get out of the apt, or even obtain land to grow decent food. The whole system stinks and modern American life is not one that brings physical or even emotional health.

  • sondar98

A good diet and healthy lifestyle needs to start at an early age. If you were to walk into a school lunchroom you would be horrified at what they are feeding American kids these days. They should eat more vegetables and fruits. The kids need to be educated on nutrition and where their food actually comes from.

  • mondobeyondo

Watch any American made movie that was filmed before, say, 1975. Or just browse through old issues of Newsweek and Life magazines, old yearbooks, TV shows, etc. Count how many fat people you see.

    • mondobeyondo

Perfect example: John Belushi’s character in the movie “Animal House” (1978) was named Bluto. From what I see at the mall now in 2012, his character should have been named “Svelte”.

As long as the customers demand burgers, fries and soda, there will be a supply. Since I live in a country where most of us consider the government servants, instead of evildoers, I’m welcoming the idea to remove consumer tax from healty food, and triple it on unhealthy food. If you can tax tobacco, you can tax soda! That would be a good example of quality government intervention:)

With that said, this is a hot topic here as well, but the discussion has started.

  • Urtica dioica

You know the guy who shows up for an important event in sandals, sweatpants and a stained t-shirt?

So, most Americans have become “The Dude” from “The Big Lebowski”?

  • http://christnotreligion.blogspot.com DL

Michael, many of the ones you list above are true, but you also forgot the following:

Horrendous grammar, not only in the MSM but on alternative blogs as well, and some (see the blog called Lone Star Watchdog for example) bloggers actually revel in their bad grammar!

Horrendous use of words as well, such as every other word the “f” word or the “s” word.

Sagging, as in pants. Gee you’d think sagging was the dress code in public schools. And, for girls, complete immodesty!

Reality TV, which is neither “reality” nor creative…it is contrived, however.

Remaking the same movies over and over again (using “3-D” as an excuse), because creativity in Hollywood and beyond is dead. Everyone raves about “Avatar” but much of it is based on a 1980s movie based on a true story, the “Emerald Forest.”

    Speaking of movies…

We are becoming like the movie “Idiocracy” where ignorance is a badge of honor…when some govt. official suggests we put anything else but water on plants, then we’ll know how bad it is!

  • Kelby

Reason #25: Burger King is (or has!) come out with a new menu item – an ice cream sundae with TWO STRIPS OF BACON in it, and there’s actually people who actually want to try it!!!! Who in their right mind would eat this CRAP?!???!!!

I know, I can come up with a gross menu item! Lets see:

HICKORY SMOKED COW DUNG! Freshly excreted cow dung, deep fried in high fructose vegetable oil and garlic sauce, and served on a turf of freshly roasted cow rump!! Yayyy!!!!
Dont wait, get it now and you’ll get a bonus of BIG ASS FRIES!! Made from genetically engineered potatoes that grow unaturally huge, and fried in a salty, garlicky concoction to make you think this really is food! Fries anywhere else are NOTHING compared to BIG ASS FRIES! order now!!

  • Tom Osborne

Not sure who you are or what your agenda is, but the fact that you include point number 5 as something “bad” besmirches your entire website…you may as well be Al Gore. Are you saying that we should all be vegan? Then you’re a bigger fool than any greenie globalist and your sheeple readers need to understand that.

Also, most of your other statistics say nothing except that America has a large population and spends money.

  • Clubfoot

Fact 16: teen pregnancy. In Afghanistan and Kenya, 100 % of girls are mothers several times over while still in their teens
Fact 22: more mortgage debt than anywhere? THIS is BAD? No mortgage=no house. What part of the American Dream don’t you understand? Maybe your parents bought you a house for cash that grows on trees in your Hometown.
This site is not legit. Articles containing unvetted “facts”, bogus assunptions, and a pandering to the ill-informed who shamelessly, through ignorance, reply as if this is to be taken more seriously than Howard Stern! “Burrrp.”
End of the dream, SEE YA!

The moral decline of this country is not caused by consumer consumption–it is caused by the consumption of pornography, voyeristic entertainment, video games, the internet, texting, and smart phones. Americans used to devote their leisure to reading the Bible for spiritual enlightenment, charitable activities, participating in sports, self education and family events. Americans are so stupid they turn to politicians to solve problems instead of God, and
have become ever more foolish, fat, and cowardly.

    • bitchtits

    AMEN!

We cannot change other people but we can change ourselves.

That means stop being a slob and start taking proper care of yourself. Lay off the TV and computers and interact with your family and live human beings. We need to stop living in these fantasy worlds! It’s making us unhappy, unfulfilled, depressed, and miserable.

When you have more respect for yourself you tend to respect others around you and that will pay it forward.

    Grow up, America!

Our food, water and air has been poisoned. We do not know all the damage the toxicity’s of all these things are doing to our bodies. Food: GMO’s, Water: Fluoride and dumping from factories, Air: Chemtrails that have poisons in them. Do a search and find out what all is in the chemtrails. People did not get obese in the old days because they had to do an honest days work. Today, we have all the work taken from us. When I was in school, we had recess for the younger kids and in high school, P.E. was a mandatory class to graduate and you had to take it in the 9th through the 12th grade; didn’t matter. This topic is not a one-size-fits-all. People are obese for all sorts of reasons.

    • Jean Bush

      Thank you, well said.

  • xtracheese

You weren’t harsh enough, but carry on America. Ingest more toxin filled meat, cheese-food, and sugary drinks, and hatred. ( you forgot to mention the hate stats, segregation and disparity of educational opportunity)

Of course since 75% don’t travel and have no idea how a modern infrastructure or society should function. They instead blame the “liberals” ( better known as lesser Nazi’s in any civilized county)and demand more guns, because they are really afraid that all of the violence that they have perpetrated against others will be returned. The average American’s response is “no place is perfect”, but those places don’t call themselves a “superpowers”, with pizza-sized pot-holes, and other bizarre and frightening stats.

Ironic isn’t it… a people who diseased millions of natives to death, and kidnapped and killed millions of Africans, ( I know, no-one was responsible for that. Lol!) only to become hostages to giant Corporations/Persons who could care less about you, and are now holding YOU hostage, making you deliberately sick and stupid, so that they can ply you with toxic food, and “fix” you with over-priced prescription drugs.

Of course, you have the “freedom”, to live like crabs in a barrel, while your “inventive” Corporations are buying private islands for when they have used you up… then on to the next..but again, carry on, blame the blacks, (that you kidnapped. Wonder why some of them are a so hostile, lol!) immigrants who work too hard for too little, like you would really do those jobs, and of course “the government”, for your personal ignorance.

Unfortunately for you, no one will miss a big, fat, mean, racist, religiously violent, bloated, dying bully! They will carry on, and find another “investment.” Harsh, but true…sad for the children though.

For having the great displeasure of having to live in the US for work (smugness down… for a few really decent Americans trapped in this mess, we tried to help bring jobs back to the US, so you didn’t give us anything, but other cultures are so much easier to deal with in general, so…goodbye, and good luck with that)

Now, I’m going to buy stock in diabetes meds, and maybe and island, yeah!! ( sorry for any errors, English is my 4th language)

  • Bill_the_cat

I just love how these discussions are filled with people who rant against liberals (rightly so), but ignore how much the GOP has had a hand in America’s decline!

It’s just bizarre that they ignore:

The GOP, not Liberals, have made greed a virtue.
The GOP, not Liberals, have taken God out of Christmas.
The GOP, not Liberals, have turned weekends into workdays.
The GOP, not Liberals, have turned envy into a marketing plan.
The GOP, not Liberals, use the military to protect the interests of the top .5%.
The GOP, not Liberals, hide behind the flag while they send others to die for their cause.
The GOP, not Liberals, have filled the streets with guns.
The GOP, not Liberals, actually believe that “greed” and the “best and brightest” are synonymous.
The GOP, not Liberals, actually believe that families who’s net worth (and therefore influence) rivals that of small nations is a good thing for a Democracy.

Spot on. There isn’t one thing wrong with this article. I’m embarrassed by how most people look, dress and act today to the point where I don’t feel like getting to know anyone. Common sense doesn’t seem to exist anymore and people have lost self respect for themselves and one another.
No wonder the Middle East wants to bomb us and take our lives. We’ve become a nation not to be reckoned with anymore. If our forefathers could see us now, they would be apalled, to say the least.

    • Jean Bush

Oh grow up! The Middle East does NOT want to bomb us. The only terrorists are YOUR government. Wake up, kid.

  • Vinny

Not that I disagree with the article, but some items on your list reach false conclusions based on the source you used. You’ll notice that lists on nationmaster only include available data and not data from every country in the world. There are over 190 countries on earth. Many of those lists on nationmaster include only 20-30 countries. Also, data between reporting sources don’t always agree. For instance, UN data reports that Russia has the highest divorce rate. Some of your conclusions imply that something is bad, but don’t give a reason why. For instance, #13 and the % of married adults. That is a rather complex topic that will reveal different conclusions depending on which demographic you study.

    In any event, good article.
