What Do They Know? The U.S. And Russia Have Both Been Developing Plans To Deal With Incoming Asteroids

When the Russians take decisive action, it is usually for a reason.  As you will see below, the Russians have suddenly decided that now is the time to create an organization that will be tasked with detecting, tracking and potentially destroying incoming asteroids.  Are they doing this now because they have finally decided that this is a good idea, or has something gotten their attention?  Of course they are not likely to publicly admit if they have come to the conclusion that a gigantic space rock is heading directly toward us.  Just like the U.S. government, the Russian government is very interested in maintaining social order, and so they would probably delay telling the public about a potential asteroid impact for as long as possible. Earth Is Moving Toward The Same Meteor Swarm That Scientists Believe Caused The Tunguska Explosion Of 1908

Over the next several weeks, our planet will have a close encounter with the Taurid meteor swarm.  It will be the closest that we have been to the center of the meteor swarm since 1975, and we won’t have an encounter this close again until 2032.  So for astronomers, this is a really big deal.  And hopefully there will be no danger to Earth during this pass, but some scientists are absolutely convinced that the Tunguska explosion of 1908 which flattened 80 million trees in Russia was caused by an object from the Taurid meteor swarm.  As you will see below, the last week of June will mark the point when we are the closest to the center of the meteor swarm, and so that will be when the risk is the greatest.  According to CBS News, our planet “will approach within 30,000,000 km of the center of the Taurid swarm” by the end of this month… (Read More...)

Is An Asteroid Coming? The Proposed Budget For NASA’s ‘Planetary Defense Coordination Office’ Is Suddenly Increased To $150 Million

It didn’t make many national headlines, but the proposed budget for NASA’s “Planetary Defense Coordination Office” was just increased by 90 million dollars.  At a time when our national budget is already stretched to the max, this seems like an odd thing to be spending so much money on.  As you will see below, the “Planetary Defense Coordination Office” is only two years old, and it is in charge of tracking threats posed by near-Earth objects such as asteroids.  Needless to say, if a giant asteroid suddenly hit our planet it would be the greatest catastrophe in modern times and for those of us that survived our lives would be radically different from then on.  So the threat is real, but in recent years NASA has assured the public that there are no imminent threats.  Has that now changed? 100 Foot Asteroid Could Pass Earth 20 Times Closer Than The Moon At 34,000 MPH On March 7th

Meteor Impact - Public DomainDid you know that a huge asteroid is scheduled to make a “close shave” with our planet on March 7th?  This asteroid is known as “2013 TX68”, and it is estimated to be anywhere from 80 to 170 feet in length.  Most news reports are saying that it is 100 feet long.  Scientists are telling us that they are not certain exactly how close this giant space rock will come, and that is rather unsettling.  They say that it could come within roughly 1/20th the distance from the Earth to the moon, or that it could pass by millions of miles away.  Because the orbit of this huge asteroid is unpredictable, they tell us that they don’t really know what will happen, but they insist that it will not hit us.  If it does pass us at 1/20th the distance from the Earth to the moon, that would be about half as far up as many of our communications satellites.  That would be incredibly close, and many are wondering what may happen if our scientists are just slightly off in their calculations. NASA Creates A ‘Planetary Defense Coordination Office’ That Will Track Meteors Headed Toward Earth

After telling us that “no large object is likely to strike the Earth any time in the next several hundred years” last year, NASA is now spending millions of dollars to set up a “Planetary Defense Coordination Office” that will be headed up by a designated “Planetary Defense Officer”. According to NASA, more than 13,500 near Earth objects have been found so far, and another 1,500 new NEOs are being discovered each year. Approximately 10 percent of all near Earth objects are one kilometer or larger in size, and if one of those giant space rocks ever hit us, it would likely be considered an “extinction level event”. Why Is NASA Working On A Way To Destroy Asteroids Using Nuclear Weapons?

Asteroid Meteor - Public DomainYes, I know that headline sounds like it comes from the 1998 movie “Armageddon” starting Bruce Willis, but this is actually happening.  NASA and the National Nuclear Security Administration are teaming up to try to figure out a way to use nuclear weapons to either destroy threatening asteroids or to at least nudge them off course.  This seems very odd considering the fact that just a couple of weeks ago NASA publicly announced that it knew of “no asteroid or comet currently on a collision course with Earth” and that “no large object is likely to strike the Earth any time in the next several hundred years“.  If what NASA told us previously is true, than it would seem that it would be a tremendous waste of time, money and resources to work on a way to destroy asteroids using nuclear weapons.  Why is NASA suddenly so interested in the threat of large asteroids if one is not likely to hit us “any time in the next several hundred years”?  Could it be possible that they know something that they are not telling us? Why Has NASA Announced That A Meteor Is NOT Going To Hit The Earth In September?

Meteors Apocalypse - Public DomainInternet buzz about a giant meteor that is going to strike our planet in September has become so intense that NASA has been forced to issue a statement publicly denying that it is going to happen.  NASA insists that the agency knows of “no asteroid or comet currently on a collision course with Earth”, and that “no large object is likely to strike the Earth any time in the next several hundred years”.  To be honest, NASA should perhaps hold off on making such bold statements concerning what will happen in the future considering the fact that the Chelyabinsk meteor that exploded over Russia in 2013 took them totally by surprise.  In any event, what we do know is that our region of space is absolutely packed with meteors and asteroids.  At this point, approximately 10,000 major near earth objects have been discovered by scientists, and about 10 percent of them are one kilometer or larger in size.  If any of those big ones were to hit us, we would be looking at another Tunguska event or worse.  Very large meteors have struck our planet before, and they will hit us again.  It is only a matter of time.
