How Will History Remember You?

How are you going to spend your life?  When it is all said and done, how will history remember you?  Unfortunately, these days most people do not spend much time thinking about those kinds of questions.  Most people just kind of stumble through life without any clear direction or meaning.  Sadly, our society makes it far too easy to remain “comfortably numb” the vast majority of the time.  We are absolutely addicted to entertainment and there is more of it available today than ever before – television, movies, music, video games, sports events, food, gambling, shopping – the outlets for feeding our addictions are seemingly endless.  But do you really want to spend your life feeding your addictions and keeping yourself entertained as much as possible?  The following is a saying that has stayed with me my entire life: “Life is like a coin – you can spend it any way that you want, but you can only spend it once.”  If the fact that we are all hurtling through space on this giant rock is just some kind of cosmic accident and life really does not have any meaning, then yes it would make sense to fill up our lives with as much pleasure as possible before we die.  But if life really does have meaning and the things that we do today can have a permanent impact on the future, then perhaps many of us need to start thinking about what kind of legacy we are going to leave behind once we are gone.


Most people don’t think too much about this, but the reality is that we all have the privilege to be living during one of the most amazing times in all of human history.

For decades, it has seemed as though history has been slowly building toward some sort of crescendo.  The pace of change just keeps getting faster and faster and faster, and our world is becoming incredibly unstable.

Just look around you.  Virtually everything that can be shaken is being shaken.

The economy is falling apart, the fabric of society is starting to come apart at the seams, war in the Middle East could erupt at any moment and the planet itself is shaking in unprecedented ways.

All you have to do is look at a population chart to realize that we are living during an absolutely unprecedented time….

Back in 1800, there were about 1 billion people in the world.  Today, there are about 7 billion.

Do you know what that means?

It means that we potentially have the opportunity to touch more lives than anyone else ever has before.

The amount of suffering in the world today is absolutely mind blowing.

Did you know that 3 billion people survive on the equivalent of $2.50 or less every single day?

There are hundreds of millions of people that do not have enough to eat today.

There are hundreds of millions of people that do not have clean water.

All over the globe children will go digging around in public trash dumps today to try to find something to eat or something to sell.

Countless numbers of other children have been sold into slavery and live every day without hope.

In some areas of the globe, children are purposely blinded with acid by their masters so that they will make more money for them begging on the streets.

Other children are chained to beds as an endless parade of sick perverts pay to have sex with them.

When you start realizing the horrors that are going on in our world, it makes it a bit more difficult to live your life only for yourself.

Tonight, there will be millions upon millions of people all over the globe on the verge of suicide because they think that life is hopeless.

Do you ever think about them?

Tonight, there will be millions upon millions of children all over the globe that will be abused by their parents or by close relatives.

Do you ever say a prayer for them?

There are so many people out there that could use a little love.  Millions are rotting away their lives in prisons – including a lot of people that are completely innocent.  Millions spend lonely day after lonely day in “retirement homes” without anyone ever coming to visit them.

This very night there will be families sleeping on the streets of every major American city.

Do you ever think about them while you are sleeping in your warm bed?

In North Korea, it is estimated that somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 people are incarcerated in nightmarish gulags.  In many cases, entire families have been imprisoned because one family member said or did something that a government official took the wrong way.  In order to survive, many of the prisoners eat “plants, grass, bark, rats, snakes, the food-stuffs of the labor camp farm animals.”

But it is not just North Korea that is sick and twisted.

The truth is that the entire global system is deeply corrupt and this has caused massive amounts of suffering all over the globe.

So instead of living your life selfishly, why don’t you make your life something to remember?

Decide to be a light in the darkness.

Thanks to technology, it is easier for the average person to make a difference than ever before.

In the old days, the elite pretty much had a monopoly on mass communication.  But today the Internet has totally changed that.

Something that you post on the Internet today could end up being seen by tens of millions of people.

Without ever leaving the comfort of your own home, you could literally change lives on the other side of the world.

Ideas are incredibly powerful, and today we are in the middle of a global information war.  Use the Internet to make a difference while you can, because the free and open Internet will not be around forever.  Already the elite are taking steps to clamp down on it.  That is why you hear so much chatter about SOPA and ACTA and CISPA.  The powers that be do not like what the Internet has turned into and they want to get it under control.

Even now, everything that you do on the Internet is being watched by governments all over the world.  But that is no reason to quit spreading the truth.  Perhaps some of the “watchers” will even be persuaded by what you have to say.

It is when times are the darkest that the greatest heroes are needed.  The world has become a very dark place and things are going to get a lot darker before it is all said and done.

But that just means that we need as many heroes as possible.

The great war between good and evil is reaching a climax.  Do you want to spend your life doing things that will make a permanent difference or do you want to spend your life on your couch staring at your television?

History is not going to care how much stuff you were able to accumulate.

But if you are able to make a true difference in the lives of others that will definitely count for something.

When people tell me that they are “bored”, that just blows me away because I honestly don’t know how anyone could be bored in this day and age.

We live during one of the most exciting times in all of human history, and I know that I could easily fill up three or four times as many hours in the day.

There is always more that could be learned and more that could be done.

All over the world, the darkness is growing, and it is going to continue to grow.

You can choose to curse the darkness, or you can choose to shine your light in that darkness.

The choice is up to you.

You don’t need to be famous to make a difference.

Neither do you need an audience of thousands upon thousands of people.

The truth is that every single person that is reading this has the ability to make a difference.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.  In a previous article, I listed some of the things that you can do right now to start making a difference….

Talk to your family.

Talk to your friends.

Share the truth on Facebook.

Share the truth on Twitter.

Join an organization.

Go on a march.

Write a letter to the editor.

Write a letter to your representatives in Congress.

Run for office.

Start a blog.

Start a website.

Make YouTube videos.

Make new friends.

Connect with new people.

Feed the homeless.

Visit those who are hurting.

Give to someone in need.

Volunteer for a cause.

Pass out fliers.

Pass out books.

Pass out DVDs.

Give a speech.

Send out emails.

Write a book.

Make a movie.

In the Declaration of Independence we find the following statement….

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

All men, women and children (including the unborn) all over the planet were created equal.  They all deserve to be loved and protected.

Unfortunately, we live in a world that is becoming very, very cold.  All throughout society, people have become greedy, selfish, boastful, proud, abusive, disrespectful, hateful, unforgiving and cruel.  People have become addicted to pleasure and to all of the good things that our debt-fueled prosperity can buy.

Where are all of the strong men and women that are willing to put God, family and country before themselves?

Where are all of the strong men and woman that are willing to stand up for what is right even if it is going to cost them everything?

The years ahead are going to be incredibly hard.  Millions of those that are living only for themselves are going to have their lives absolutely shattered by what is coming.

But if you have a purpose that is bigger than yourself, you will likely find that the years ahead will be absolutely teeming with meaning and adventure.

So how will history remember you?

Hopefully it will remember you as someone of great love.  Hopefully it will you as someone that loved God, family and country.  Hopefully it will remember you as someone that made a difference in the lives of others.

You only have one life.

Spend it wisely.

      How do you know that? Without the God stuff nothing would exist. The deminishing belief in God co-insides with the deminishing values of society…and that’s very easy to prove, just look in the mirror.

    Based on sustainable energy extraction the carrying capacity of the Earth is estimated at one billion.
    According to M.K.Hubbert our exponential growth is a mere blip in the history the earth and that human civilisation has the potential to collapse. This could be wrong but given human nature I suspect collapse will be an eventual outcome. What does history me in this context?

    I am, I suppose like everyone else, living during a period of abundance and as to being remembered I don’t really care. Many people are remembered for the wrong things – Hitler, Stalin, etc. Remembrance is a human construct that only has meaning as we as a species exists. Human civilisation will collapse…maybe some will survive and there will be some historical memory. Irrespective of this the Earth has a finite existence with an end coming through an event like an asteroid strike, other natural event or ultimately the demise of our Sun.

    History is ultimately finite and everyone’s history is finite so there is no point in worrying if history will remember any of us. Each individual’s existence is ridiculously short in the context of the vastness of time and so we cannot comprehend this.

    Given the finite nature of our existence and the uniqueness of our consciousness – we only exist once. It is sad that we fritter our limited time away in a futile hope of something else rather than addressing our earthly issues.

  • Question more to the point-when one is at Judgement, how will God see you? History is an abstract. That said, though, your article is very cutting and appropriate. I used to pass out DVD’s/CD’s…no one wants to here it. Do something? by all means, charity and little acts daily are always good and needed. Dont look for Sam Govt, do things for someone on your own-DIY. Dont look to political parties ( I was a state chair of a Third Party, never grew, before me, during or after, most want to keeping complaining, then keep doing same things.) I try to do charity and increase prayer life. At this point, prayer and one-one charity only thing left. Hold unto your seats, next few yrs will be revealing……

    What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world but forfeits his soul?
    It grieves me the most when your bloggers respond with a call to morality that is then rebuffed by some idiot, trying to be funny but with nothing to say, who takes offence at the call.
    Laugh and scorn all you want, but the truth is that moral people sleep very well at night, enjoy their families, look forward to the future with hope and don’t need drugs or alcohol or fornication to fill in any empty holes in our souls.
    This isn’t boasting but a plead to the remainder to turn around and embrace the true life your Creator designed you for.

    Thsi topic is very important. There is very little genuine talk of doing anything for any reason except big money these days.

    The world is a dump in many ways, but Americans are in their mass delusion still – but it is rapidly disappearing. I wonder how nuts they’ll go when they wake up? More and more wake up every day since they are forced to, but the favoured people in the upper middle class and above keep having a great time on their permanent vacation.

    It can’t last, not with the rest of the world wise to the fact we have had more all this time.

    “Life is like a coin – you can spend it any way that you want, but you can only spend it once.” I used this old quote on my children as they were growin up. It’s one that goes to the core of measuring your life.

    Also, what legacy do each of us want to leave behind for our children? “Oh, dad was good on video games” or “dad had a great DVD collection”

    Each of us need to devote part of our life to a cause that is great than ourselves.

    I think about what you have said each and everyday. I cry for all the childen that go hungery, I will be glad when Great Spirit gets ahold of these preverts that use children for their sick fun, I am far from cruel but we will all have to face are maker someday. How many of us thank the field workers whom put your produce on the shelves at Wal-Mart they work for very little pay, but we grip because their taking the jobs, jobs that most would not think of working, it’s below them, in South America many people are dieing of kidney problem because they work in the sugar cane fields in terrible heat and because they work such long hours for an american based comp which pays them very little they don’t have the proper hydration, no water breaks.

    I will not boast about the good I have done in my life. It just seems to never be enough. The problems are so enormous and the pain is so widespread, that even when I do one thing or ten things that are good,I still feel like I haven’t done anything that can make a real difference. I donate money and food and time and prayer, but it still is not enough. What more can I do? My heart aches for all of the abused people in this world and the hungry and the homeless and the sick and the dying. Jesus Christ is the only One who can make a worldwide difference, as He is the only One with the power to do so on a worldwide scale. I might be able to rescue one child, but what about the other 10 million? I can give aid to one, but there are so many others that I can’t help.

    [We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal…] Before we get too misty-eyed, it’s good to remember that, when these words were written, they did not apply to women, slaves, the indigenous peoples, or the Mexicans whose lands we would later steal. Even after the American Revolution, political rights remained largely in the hands of the wealthy and the land-owning, and little had changed for the overwhelming majority. We prefer the mythical comic book version of US history, though, because it’s so much more comforting than the reality.

    We need a breakdown before there can be a breakthrough, or at least a chance for people with better ideas to form workable living arrangements. And there needs to be a conflagration of the bad before the good can flourish, like a brush fire. There is no turning this thing back, let it burn.

  • I must say that I often disagree with you, but this article really hits home with me. I’ve written much about the same things, and admire your candor and clarity on this issue. Chris Hedges has written eloquently on it as well, and the more we adopt our position as a consumer rather than a citizen with an active ethical position, we will continue to tumble toward some sort of existential abyss. Nevermind the fundamental immorality of a global economic system that commodifies everything, certainly not the least of which are people. Global capitalism cares not about concepts like these when profits are to be made.

    “How will history remember you?” That’s a valid question that deserves a valid answer. Most of us should count ourselves lucky to be remembered by a few family members and friends, when we depart this earth. Better-known people may rate a higher-profile upon their deaths, and a select few make it into the pages of the history books. Even then, within a few short decades – studies suggest two generations is sufficient – the memory of the departed person has largely been lost into pages of history. The sands of time continue to flow, and soon, all trace of the person who once was – vanishes. Perhaps this accounts for the chapter Ecclesiastes in the Bible, which ruminates upon this very subject. The Judeo-Christian worldview once taught that human beings attain immortality through worship and belief in God, and by one’s good works. And of course, by siring children and helping teach them so that our civilization can be passed along into the future. As far as history goes, if one’s reason for being is to be remembered by history, then things look bleak at the moment. Why? Young people – most of them anyway – no longer care to study history.

    Great article and so very true. You got me here…. I’m guilty of the very things you list. I watch too much TV and am too concerned with my own comfort. There are terrible times coming and I think we all have a sense of that. As Scripture says, “2 Timothy 3: 1-5 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.”
    I realize that many people do not believe in God or in the accuracy of the Bible, but you have to admit, the above description is right on the money.

  • I will be remembered for showing people how to prepare for and survive the threats of terrorist attacks, natural disasters, economic collapse, or a pandemic, so that they can protect their families.

    When the support system fails and people are without food, water, electricity, etc., the thin veneer of civility will be removed and cities will be overrun with crime.

    If you haven’t taken action to prepare, we’re in the calm before the storm. Once a crisis hits, it’s too late to prepare.

    I’m not someone imbued with an overabundance of positive optimism, but more of a pessimist. I see little reason to believe things will turn out particularly well, but it’s nice to hope. Man is just too damn stupid to listen for his own good. That being said, I’ve always liked Chaplin’s speech from the Great Dictator. For those who never saw it, check it out.

    I’m sorry but I don’t want to be an Emperor, that’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible, Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another, human beings are like that. We all want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone and the earth is rich and can provide for everyone.

    The way of life can be free and beautiful. But we have lost the way.

    Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate;
    has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed.

    We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in:
    machinery that gives abundance has left us in want.
    Our knowledge has made us cynical,
    our cleverness hard and unkind.
    We think too much and feel too little:
    More than machinery we need humanity;
    More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness.

    Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.

Then in the name of democracy let’s use that power, let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give you the future and old age and security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power, but they lie. They do not fulfil their promise, they never will. Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people. Now let us fight to fulfil that promise. Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers, do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness.

    Soldiers! In the name of democracy, let us all unite!

    Look up! Look up! The clouds are lifting, the sun is breaking through. We are coming out of the darkness into the light. We are coming into a new world. A kind new world where men will rise above their hate and brutality.

    The soul of man has been given wings, and at last he is beginning to fly. He is flying into the rainbow, into the light of hope, into the future, that glorious future that belongs to you, to me and to all of us. Look up. Look up.

      In Acts 26:18, Jesus told the apostle Paul that his (and our) mission is “To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.”

      In Revelation 3:21, Jesus addressed today’s lukewarm Laodicean church, and said “To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.”

      And that my friend is worth fighting for. :-)

    Stuart Dobson wrote above, “Forget the god stuff, it’s completely unnecessary.” Why is the “god stuff” unnecessary?? Why is the mention of the God who gave us life, and who gave him self for us, giving us the right to move from “children of wrath” to become “children of God” so unnecessary?

    When folks make statements like this, I would like them to substantiate there presuppositions why they claim that “god” is unecessary. The small “g” in the word god gave him away. Mention the things of God today and people get all nervous and defensive, perhaps because our culture has “proven” that the Bible is not the inspired book that it claims to be, or perhaps because science has “proven” the THEORY of evolution, and concluded that the creation story is only a fable, or perhaps it is moral absolutes that the Bible proclaim in the midst of a morally realative & humanistic society, etc, etc.

    If you are rich or famous it really is not going to matter 100 years from now. We are here on earth for such a very short time. It is very admirable to try to do good works and treat your fellow human being kindly and with respect, these are all good things to be remembered for. But, it will not save you on judgement day. All the talk of this “god stuff” here on this site, is not foolishness or unecessary, it is the most important thing that you can be remembered for….not only how we treated others or affected our world, but also whether you were a witness to the Lord Jesus Christ, whom the Bible says “Is the only Name under heaven given to men by which they may be saved”

    I have no children and no kin to remember me, but I don’t really mind.

    In my opinion, there will not be a “History” after it’s all over. Like the Dark ages, humans will have no history to speak of for centuries, if ever.

    Whoever left standing will write their history long, long time after most of the people here will be gone. However they will remember the Rothschilds, the Rockefellers, and maybe Bill Gates.

  • The church in America has a strong tendency to only talk about the benefits of being a Christian and rarely talks about the cost. We are so eager to tell lost and broken people all the benefits that they can have as a free gift that we neglect to tell them of the cost. There is a cost. Paul says, “I consider everything a loss.” He says, “For we are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake.” Jesus says, “If anyone would come after me he must deny himself, take up his cross daily and follow after me. Whoever wants to save his life will lose it but whoever loses his life for me will save it.” The whole argument of the gospel is that what I must “lose” in order to gain Christ is nothing compared to the value of having Christ. However, you cannot be a Christian without losing your life. We are not telling people the truth if we do not also tell them the cost of being a Christian.

    Christians will be hated by the world because…

    I. The world hates Christ and His Father (vv. 18-21, 23, 24b & 16:3)

    First of all we need to be clear about what Jesus means when he uses the term, “world”. He is not talking about the earth and the sky and the stars and the trees. He is not emphasizing how big the world is. Rather, this term is referring to the world of men as it is in rebellion to God. “World,” especially in John is not referring to “bigness” but rather to “badness”. This word is used 78 times in the gospel of John. If you were to look up every reference you will discover that the world is the society of human beings who were created by God the Father through God the Son and who love evil and do evil and therefore hate Christ. John 3: 19-20 says, “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.” In John 7:7 Jesus says to his brothers, “The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that what it does is evil.” PLAN ON SUFFERING JAIL TORTURE EVEN MARTYRDOM!!!!HOPE YOU LOSE YOUR LIFE NOT SAVE IT!!!8“If the world hates you, you should realize that it hated me before you. 19If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as one of its own. But because you do not belong to the world and I have chosen you out of it,[f] the world hates you. 20Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21They will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me.
    22“If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have any sin. But now they have no excuse for their sin. 23The person who hates me also hates my Father. 24If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not have any sin. But now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. 25But this happened so that[g] what has been written in their law might be fulfilled: ‘They hated me for no reason.’[h]
    26“When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. 27You will testify also, because you have been with me from the beginning.I HOPE THE WORLD SEE THE JESUS IN YOU AND HATES YOU!

      I don’t hate Christians, in fact I am totally indifferent. However, I do hate so-called “Christians” who try to use the power of the State to impose their version of “Christianity” on everyone else.

      Why does the world worship Satan? Well, I’m not good at Bible chapters and verses – not yet, anyway. But here goes:

      Jesus was tempted by Satan 3 times, after fasting for 40 days. He was tempted to turn stones into bread, to jump off a cliff and be saved by angels, and He was offered all the kingdoms of the world if He would bow down to the devil. Jesus refused all three.

      Unfortunately, many, many other people have taken up Satan’s third offer (humans can’t turn stones into bread, and most of us would die if we jumped off a cliff.) But being offered the world if you worship the devil (i.e. money, women, worldwide popularity, etc. etc) – now, that appeals to a lot of people. Short term fame and fortune – long term existence in hell. Lots of people have made that Faustian bargain.

      A few examples: Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Tupac Shakur, The Notorious B.I.G., Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, John Belushi, Elvis Presley – the list goes on and on and on.

      You can enjoy your money, fame, drugs, parties, women/men, and so forth, but in the end, what does it matter? What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

    History will remember any of us as those in power choose. The bad might be remembered as good and the good as bad. When it is advantageous for those in power any shade of grey will be employed or the colors switched altogether.

    The question is can you sleep well at night?

  • When people tell me that they are “bored”, that just blows me away because I honestly don’t know how anyone could be bored in this day and age.

    ^ PUT THESE PEOPLE TO WORK! Cajole them into service through fear if you have to! Try love first! These kind of bored people need to be doing the countless lifetime of things that I need to be doing. DELEGATE, DELEGATE, DELEGATE!
