A National ID Card For American Citizens? Get Ready – The Real ID Act Goes Into Effect On May 11

For a moment, imagine a future where you are not able to drive a car, get on a plane, get on a train, vote, enter a federal building, open a bank account or get a job without a national ID card. You don't think that could ever happen in America? Well, you might want to brush up on the Real ID Act because it is going to go into effect on May 11, 2011 unless something is done to stop it.  When I first learned this, I was absolutely stunned.  After all, wasn't the Real ID Act supposed to be "dead"?  A few years ago state legislatures across the nation were in an uproar over this law.  The Department of Homeland Security was forced to delay implementation of it several times.  But now it is back.  You see, this is what the federal government often does.  They will try to push something very unpopular through, and if they meet resistance they will "play dead" until the uproar has died down and then they will come right back and implement it anyway.  This is what is happening with the Real ID Act.

As of May 11, all driver's licenses across the United States will be required to conform to federal national security standards.  In essence, our licenses are now going to be federalized.

Yes, this is really happening.  A Fox News article from a couple weeks ago confirmed that these "national ID cards" will be required to board airplanes and enter federal buildings....

States must be in compliance by May with the regulations laid out in the 2005 REAL ID Act. The law, a recommendation of the Sept. 11 commission that investigated the 2001 terror attacks, creates a national security standard for state-issued identification cards to be used for purposes like boarding airplanes and entering federal buildings.

Isn't that great?

Now security goons will be able to ask us for our "papers" just like they used to do in Nazi Germany and the USSR.

Back in 2008, former U.S. Representative Bob Barr wrote the following about how not having one of these new national ID cards will automatically strip us of some of our most fundamental rights....

"A person not possessing a Real ID Act-compliant identification card could not enter any federal building, or an office of his or her congressman or senator or the U.S. Capitol. This effectively denies that person their fundamental rights to assembly and to petition the government as guaranteed in the First Amendment."

Of course the Department of Homeland Security insists that the Real ID Act is just here to "help" us and to make life "better" and "more secure".  According to their website, some of the goals of the Real ID Act are "to help prevent terrorism, reduce fraud, and improve the reliability and accuracy of personal identification documents."

But is this really what we want America to become?

A nation where we are constantly passing through checkpoints and where security goons are constantly checking our national ID card?

What kind of liberty and freedom is that?

Eventually these national ID cards will likely be required for virtually every single interaction that we have with the federal government.

Can you imagine the kind of power that the federal government will have to watch us and track our activities if this thing gets fully implemented?

The more you really think about the notion of a national ID card for Americans the more repulsive it becomes.

Eventually, without a "Real ID" you will not be able to be hired by most employers.  So in essence, you will be required to get the permission of the federal government before you can work.

Without a "Real ID", your ability to travel will be greatly restricted.  Eventually there will be very few modes of public transportation that you will be able to use without having a national ID card.

And what if you lose your national ID card?  Talk about a headache!

Hey, eventually they might just decide to solve that problem by putting a microchip directly into our hands.

Wouldn't that be convenient?

Can you see where all of this is headed?  Many of the people that are attempting to implement this thing may have "good intentions", but we all know what they say about "good intentions".

We do not need a national ID card to have a nation that is safe and secure.

Please contact your representatives in Washington D.C. and let them know that you want the Real ID Act repealed once and for all.

If we put up with a national ID card, then the Obama administration will be emboldened to try to implement the "universal Internet ID" that they have been talking about.

The sad truth is that America is no longer "the land of the free".  The government has decided that in order to keep us "safe", everything that we do must be watched, tracked, traced, recorded and controlled.

It doesn't matter whether the Democrats are in power or if the Republicans are in power - every year the United States becomes even more like a prison camp.

Hopefully the American people will wake up and will realize that this is not what our founding fathers intended.

So what do you all think about the coming implementation of the Real ID Act?  Please feel free to leave a comment with your thoughts below....

    @ Mike:

Belief in Christ is irrelevant to this conversation. Your god specifically said (assuming any of it is true, which is an assumption I do not make)that he he had not come here to establish an earthly kingdom. Therefore, we are left to our own devices when it comes to creating systems of government for ourselves.

The fact that the bible later goes on to command obedience to Government ought to tell you something about the true nature of your religion; it is a control mechanism cynically foisted on the world by evil men who had no interest in the spiritual truth Jesus had to offer.

If YOU were interested in having a bunch of people obey your criminal ‘government’, and if YOU were able to read while your subjects could not, and if YOU were declaring what your god said and what he didn’t (like the catholics deciding which books would be included in your bible and which would not)— how hard would it be to slip an extra verse in commanding obedience to governments?

“Oh, and by the way, you know that thing where Jesus said his was a spiritual kingdom and he wasn’t concerned about earthly government? Yeah, that was a mistake! turns out God wants you to obey me and my pals who rule over you! Honest! I swear on a stack of the Bibles me and my buddies put together! You can’t read, SO JUST TRUST US! So go forth and be ye righteous and obedient! Now pay your taxes, fools! errr…..I mean, Children!”

This analogy illustrates what you and your friends are doing:

“Hey everyone, the house is on fire! wake the kids, everybody out of the house!”

    “You must believe in Spiderman!”

“What? The house is on fire! Bring hoses, bring buckets, bring COFFEE MUGS! Anything that we can use to put out the fire!”

“No no! Turn to Spiderman! Spiderman will save us!”

“We will all die in this fire if we don’t put it out right now! Let’s all work together, otherwise we’ll all die together!”

“Spiderman says to turn to him!”

“Look dude, this Spiderman thing is unproductive. Believe in Spiderman if it makes you feel better, but he isn’t going to help us deal with the house fire. Find a more productive response!”

“Believing in Spiderman is the only thing we can do, really.”

“Oh yeah? well, I guess I’ll just keep spraying water and trying to actually put the fire out.”

    “Spiderman!”

My dad tells me that when bar codes were introduced back in the 60′s everybody thought it was going to be the End. “It’s the Mark! THE MARK!!!! DOOOOOOM!!!!!!” But it wasn’t.

They thought Hitler was the Anti-Christ, but he wasn’t.

Stop forcing everything through the lens of your hysterical holy book. How many times must your fears turn out to be groundless before you stop looking for Satan under every rock? We don’t need Satan, human beings are doing a good job of enslaving one another all on their own.

Now please…I implore you….forget about Spiderman for the moment, and pick up a hose.

We need you, Mike. Bring your friends!

tao, tao, tao. No matter what any person or persons do, the machine will not be stopped until JESUS returns and HE defeats satan and all the armies that are going against Israel. Its called prophecy. No other religious books or writings speak of what is to come, except GODs word, the Holy Bible. If you would read it, you would understand. To avoid a debate,I’ll make it simple. There is coming a day, very soon, when many people will mysteriously disappear. After this happens, those still on earth will be subjected to unprecedented horrors. In order to buy or sell anything, they will be required to “take” the mark. The reason the 60′s or Hitler didn’t make this come to pass is because prophecy hadnt been fulfilled yet. In Hitlers case, Israel wasn’t even a nation yet. However, once Israel did become a nation in 1948,the clock began counting down. This generation, according to GOD, will see HIS return. Im sure you’ve heard this before. All im saying is, when it happens, please don’t accept the mark. Try to endure. Its going to happen. When it does,I pray that you remember these things. I would like to meet you in Heaven one day.

  • Rod

Taylour, please explain why there is no rapture. What is the basis of this thought? Regarding the tribulation, I believed that we Christians were taken off earth prior to it. Now, however, I’m leaning more towards a “mid” trib rapture, meaning we are here for the first 3 1/2 years, and then snatched out. It rained on Noah how long before the ark floated? It’s vain to think,as Christians, that we won’t be subjected to some degree of “rain”. However, believers won’t be around for the last 3 1/2 years of the trib. That is the judgements for the non-believers.

In some form, the National ID card has been around for some time now. Check your drivers license, do you see a black strip on the back? I wonder, do you work at a place where you are required to have a proximity card to get in and out of the building? Guess you didn’t know your information was registered on it too. You would probably be surprised how many ID cards you carry around in the form of credit cards, debit cards, health cards etc that have your most private information on them. You just didn’t need to scan them when you went through the Airport or other high risk areas.

Yes, Big Brother is watching, has been watching and will continue to watch and track you wherever you go. Now, don’t you feel more secure?

  • martian

Wow… Jesus freaks and all kinds of retards congregate here as I see… I feel totally hopeless. I’m leaving.

  • Jay

I say the governments are dictators! They are probably already working with the future anti-christ predicted in the bible. I’m sure there will be some of you who will argue against me but hey I am entitled to saying my thoughts. They want to control everyone but they WILL NOT control me. I will not comply with these dictators.

  • great but the explanation of the pre-tribulation rapture is the only way that all the Bible makes literal sense

  • ter

Look, there are valid points that I have seen here on all sides of this issue…what every side still has in common is that we do have the freedom to refuse this “tagging” whether its the God given freedom and you are refusing because you stand up for Jesus or whether its the human freedom of choice that our country is supposed to stand for either way we should stand up for what WE AS INDIVIDUALS believe in…THAT is the freedom we all want right? by the way I stand up for Jesus, but believe that God gives us the right to choose him or to not choose him….I do however pray that all will decide that He is the way…if they hear God’s truth and still decide to deny him, then HE will decide in the end…it is not up to us to pass judgment on our fellow man. That is a job for our creator….

  • ACincinnatiButler

This one caught my eye, so read your article. I followed your link about the May 11,2011 deadline to the NCSL website and see that on March 4th Napolitano extended the deadline to January 15, 2013. Evidently either comments to Congressman were successful, or the DHS is having empathy with the states in these ‘tough economics times’.

I have a suggestion for your posts – could you post a date on the header? It would help in knowing how to respond.

  • kaori

I dont get it, you guys say gov or fed is evil and yet you lot of you guys probably voted, why do any of you even participate in voting, since everyone is basically evil or puppet.

Like for presidents[same applies to senators governors so forth] for example if he was religious, im prety sure ton of you religious folk would vote for him in a heart beat, then a few months down the line, he doesnt accomplish anything, just a bunch of lies, thats all they really have to mention is a simple religious thing, and they have fished ya in. Really dont get the voting. Votes are kinda of pointless?

I thought christ was coming in 2000? now its 2012.

  • Robert F. Savio

Those who sit back and do nothing about the government insanity that is destroying our country because they believe that “Jesus” will drop by and make everything better are delusional.
Their inaction and passivity CONTRIBUTES to the government’s strangle hold upon the nation.

  • ter

Yes I think voting is pointless, but its our “right” right? and I don’t think Jesus is going to just “drop by and make everything better” either. I believe that God will help me decide who to vote for IF anyone…That is a choice I am free to make.

  • smarterthanyou

    Dear Tao Jones,

IF YOU DONT LIKE FREEDOM OF SPEECH… LEAVE!

    @ Tao Jones

God and Jesus are very real.It is because of God that we wake up everyday and because of Jesus that if we repent, then our sins shall be forgiven. It’s not to late to change your comment.

  • Vidar

There are a few issues with this article.

1: Huge assumptions. It claims a slippery slope argument that tries to say that once we have a federal I.D., everything will go bad. This is untrue. This I.D. could potentially replace interstate travel’s need for passports, driving, etc. And it will help for security. There have been so many threats against federal buildings, they already have weapon checks at the start of the building. This is nothing new.

2: Tracking us? Really? Give me a name, and I could go on google, find articles on that person’s life, where they live, probably what they do, and almost anything else. The government is the same way. They just have access to our credit card records, our birth certificates, and everything else. This is the technological age. Even the conversation about this article can be tracked. So this won’t change anything other then knowing who went in and out of special buildings that could be targets for security threats.

As for religion, well, to each his own on that topic. Though there are reasons why our forefathers, in their wisdom, decided that church and state should be separate. Clearly that got lost along the way somewhere.

  • Alex

Now security goons will be able to ask us for our “papers” just like they used to do in Nazi Germany and the USSR.

Bullshit, in the USSR we couldn’t imagine something like this even in the worst nightmare.

  • Israel

matthew 24:29-44 Yeshua said after the tribulation! people! no one is going anywhere til all is fulfilled! no secret rapture! a lie from the Roman Empire christianity!

  • JonBL

its like the stories in matthew, the weeds and wheat< the feild is the world , the harvesters are angels, the wheat is gods people and the weeds is satans, for jesus says the farmer does not have his servents remove them for it will damage the crop, let them grow together and we will seperate at the time of harvest< they first gather the weeds and pile them to burn them, and then they harvest the wheat and they put it in the barn and the barn would be heaven

  • Drummergirl5

In the world I live in you already need a social security number to be hired and a photo ID to board a plane. I don’t frequent federal buildings so I don’t know what kind of ID is required presently. I don’t see a whole lot of difference in having a card. What’s going on with TSA bothers me much more than a Real iD card. But its a strange new world since 9/11, that’s for sure.

  • FreedMind

You people need to wake up!
Our government lies to us on a daily basis, that’s a fact.
This issue is not about religion or anything else it’s about our freedom and keeping it. I’m not saying this will happen because I can’t predict the future. I’m just saying it could happen. I’m sure the Jews didn’t think they were going to be herded into prison camps and gas chambers but it happened.
To say that we need to not worry about it because Jesus is coming is not a viable solution to the problem. I’m not saying not to have faith. Just don’t have faith in anything but yourself to protect your freedom of religion.
America is the greatest country in the world. We the people need to keep it that way.

  • Tom

Yeah. So what are we going to do about it? Do you believe petition-writing is effective with this stuff? NO! This is the type of thing that happens because we allow it to and it doesn’t matter who you vote for. So why doesn’t someone on here tell me why America is still the best place to live. I’ll tell you if your response is bullshit or not.

  • Heather Sunde

Vidar, Have you read the Constitution?? The words “separation of church and state” are NOWHERE in the Constitution. Our Forefathers did NOT decide that church and state should be separate! That phrase was actually contained in a LETTER written by Thomas Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists Association in 1802–15 years AFTER the Constitution had been written. The Danbury Baptists were a minority religious group that feared they had no “inalienable” right granted them by the state of Connecticut to worship as they chose. So, they wrote to President Jefferson seeking his guidance and comfort that they could continue to worship as they wanted. Jefferson responded with the exact words from the Constitution to allay their fears. He then mentioned the “establishment clause” created a “wall of separation between church and state”. If you read the letter, Jefferson’s clear meaning was that the religious were protected from the state, not the other way around. “The legitimate powers of government”, he told them, “reach actions only, and not opinions”.

It didn’t get lost along the way somewhere, it is a misinterpretation by the Democrats. They put a spin on jefferson’s letter, always bringing up the topic, making it SEEM as though it is in the Constitution. CLEARLY, it is NOT.

  • anon

Can we have names of those who support this bill and the names of those who brought this bill into action? I saw the satanist U.S. Representative Bob Barr mentioned but there must be more fascist nazi’s working inside the US government to still have this bill alive…I guess all those nay sayers will have to eat crow when they are standing in line for their “freedom lost” card.

  • anon

Rod there are plenty of religious books that talk about the end times. And if your not willing to stop this remember “you’re lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!” Rev 3:16

  • anon

Vider are you taking the mark of the beast on your right or left hand?

  • Lightworker

Tao Jones, you are the only person on here who made any sense. Keep spreading the truth!

  • Tribe of Manasseh

The Messiah was not white. Scripture proves that. So if you’re Jesus is blonde haired, blue eyed, you’re already serving the image of the beast.

  • Overcomer

Amen Rachel. You’ve obviously drawn the fire of the spirit of anti-Chrits.

And to you TAO – what you depict is not all true. Jesus will return eventually and set up a kingdom here ON EARTH and WILL reign for 1,000 years. We are instucted from the BIBLE to pray for our govenrnment and obey those who have the rule over us and given clear examples that show that obedience to mans laws ends when it is contrary to Gods law. We are instructed to NOT take the mark of the Beast which will come in time.

I do not like the direction the world is headed. It will end up in a one world government eventually but I will fight it tooth and nail to delay it.

  • Dennis

Only a morron whould not want to Have I.D. cards either that or an illegal alien . I.D. card would secure our borders ,stop voter fraud . It’s a good Idea. photo I.D. is a good thing. There are times we should need to prove who we are ! The only person who would not want this is someone with something to hide !!!!!!!!

  • oxbobend

I already have a fed. id.

    It’s called a passport.

  • Revelation 13:16,17
And he (the anti-christ)will cause all both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond to receive a mark in their right hand or in their foreheads:
And no man may buy or sell, except that he has the mark or the name of the beast (the anti-christ) or the number of his name.

  • Dave Rice

We’re screwed. The Bible will not be proven wrong. Babylon is falling. The great power of the East is killing “the great satan”, with the help of their messiah, Obama, the liar and deceiver.

  • Veet

I thought it was advertisers that were the ones who got to decide if every moment of our life is tracked.

  • Bill Gecko

don’t be stupid people. Birth certificates, driver’s license, passports, WIC cards, Social Security numbers, et al. These are government documents that have existed for decades. What difference does this make other than it consolidates these documents into one.

The only people fearing this are those who have a reason to fear.

  • Jennifer

all i can say is i read nearly all of these posts, and i agree w rachel..i pray for those who arent saved..and those who mocked the words of the bible to use them for your own satisfaction..rapture will happen more than likely very soon, and i hope you’re all ready..it will be a horrible place if your not http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xks83CAIrC0

copy and paste this link for some info, it just may be what u need to hear!!!
    GOD BLESS!!!!!!!

  • George

Are you all nuts? Read Romans 13. What is wrong with wanting all states to have some standardization of security? If a national card is wrong (MARK OF THE BEAST!) then what makes a statewide card OK? Aren’t we also screaming on other boards about the need to control illegal immigration and keep illegal aliens from depleting resources like healthcare? Grow up. Educate yourselves, and live in reality. Jesus IS coming soon. And he’s not worried about national ID cards.

  • murmaid

Why in the hell does this govt. want to crawl up our asses all the time?! I just don’t understand this “control mentality” and need for ultimate power! Isn’t it funny this was planned to go into effect right after Bin Laden gets whacked? Got all our minds off of ID’s due to the constant puking up a terrorist getting whacked…..tricky, tricky, tricky. I’ll just leave this whacked out country and not let this govt. get more of my dollars!

  • Dave

While I’m not going to dignify all the religious stuff that’s been posted on here with a response I will respond to the websites primary purpose. First, it’s important to remember that the act requires that ID’s meet the following requirements:

    Full legal name,
    Signature,
    Date of birth,
    Gender,
    Unique, identifying number,
    Principal residence address,
Front facing photograph of the applicant.

Most state drivers licences meet that to begin with. I know Massachusetts does and I got my latest one in 2008. They just changed it to include my signature.

Second the small # of states that don’t meet the requirements have all requested and been granted extensions.

This isn’t Nazisim or Stalinisim or any other kind of “ism.” It’s trying to ensure that all drivers licences have the same information to prevent fake ID’s and other things of the kind from being used as generically as they are used now

Second, the Secretary of Homeland Defense extended the deadline in March to 2013

    http://www.ncsl.org/default.aspx?tabid=13577

That gives the states 20 more months (or 18 now) to change their licences, in some cases very slightly.

Third, you have one big myth at the start of your argument

“get on a train, vote, enter a federal building, open a bank account or get a job without a national ID card”

ID cards have never been required to enter the House or Senate buildings. I know because I do so every week. ID’s have ALWAYS been required to open a bank account, and it’s illegal to prevent someone from voting without an ID. You need to do so to register sometimes, but only an Act of Congress can change voting requirements and there is nothing in the Real ID act that impacts the Voter Rights Act of 1965

  • Reginald W

I’m sorry, did I break your concentration? Please continue. You were saying something about… “Best intentions”?

  • Wes

    Dave -

Although my thinking slants towards those expressed by the author of this article, your point about State licences having that information, at least in Wisconsin where I reside, is dead on and is worthy of readers’ consideration.

However, I must address one point you made, “but only an Act of Congress can change voting requirements and there is nothing in the Real ID act that impacts the Voter Rights Act of 1965″. In Wisconsin, my State governtment, “act of congress”, is attempting to change my voting rights. We are still in the streets here. So it is good to point out that it doesn’t matter if the Real ID act impacts voter rights, because this is being challenged in more States than just Wisconsin currently. Sure, I agree that “it’s illegal to prevent someone from voting without an ID”. However, I’m not sure anymore that I am qualified to discuss with you, or anyone, about what is “illegal” in terms of what government can/cannot do. I have already had many of those thoughts abruptly over ruled in the past months. I would argue that not only could this new ID negatively affect our daily lives, and rights, but it might very well have more impact than what we here now, can think of.

  • ghostmakermice

you already have to have government supplied ID to work anywhere – it’s called a Social Security card

I’m still against this crap though

  • I Think I Read Something About This In Revalation::

Revelation 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
Revelation 13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Revelation 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. (666)

  • We are simply moving one step closer to the implementation of the “mark of the beast” that the last book of the Bible Revelations warns us about! May Christians everywhere know and believe God’s holy Word!

Well, today is May 24,2011. No National ID Card. That is not to say there won’t be. I believe there will beand i beieve it will get much worse for the citizens of the US. I have been told i am crazy but i believe the FEMA camps exist. I believe they are unused military bases . Some may have even been used to hold Japanese living in America during WWII. My mother worked at a prison of War camp for Germans in S.C. so i know they exist. As long as Americans support these war then there will be no intereference from the Government. As a exMarine veteran for three tours in Vietnam i thought after American realized that war was bases on a lie they would think seriously before supporting any more wars. Iraqi War, Afghanistan War, Kuwait and now Libya proved how wrong i was. i see American supporting a war with Iran. The propaganda machine in Washington supported by the CIA controlled news media will convievce the US has to protect the people of Iran. Never mind that the Bauchi Rebels in Iran have been recieving help from the CIA for two years. Now, Hillary Clinton has been advised to send millions to back the MEK. A very powerful terrorist group. My bad! There aren’t terrorist if the US backs them. What was i thinking? I keep getting a patroit mixed up with just a citizen. The war with Iran will be a bloody war because the US has been busy surrounding Iran with more than 60 military bases. I realize the US is planning to use nuclear bombs but when the troops are on the ground it won’t be a slaugter like it was in Iraq where most of the Revolutionary Guard was decimated in a few days.More American lives will be sacrificed for oil,gas and US global hegemony.

  • john jane

the Department of Homeland Security insists that the Real ID Act is just here to “help” us and to make life “better” and “more secure”. what this really means is they want to contral all of us even when we take a dump

  • Ashley

well if your a beliver in the lord’s word we all knew this was coming he gave us warnning years ago and its finally hear and that just lets me know 1 very exciting thing is that its almost over i will be meeting my lord my god face to face THANK YOU JESUS I CANT WAIT TO MEET YOU IN HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it is interesting that just below the article is an advertisment for Mitt Romney and a link to his campaign whom happens to be a supporter of a national ID.
