Many Americans are already painfully aware that violent crime is experiencing a massive upsurge in the United States. As the U.S. economy has tanked and as unemployment has skyrocketed, many Americans have found themselves becoming increasingly desperate. Hard economic times usually lead to an increase in crime, but what is happening across the U.S. now is absolutely stunning. In economically-troubled areas such as Detroit crime statistics are climbing into the stratosphere. In fact, there are many communities in the United States where it is simply not safe to go out at night anymore. Millions of Americans find themselves prisoners in their own homes as they lock themselves in their houses in an attempt to keep the crime out. The truth is that it is really hard to live the American Dream when there is a raging crime wave going on right outside your door. The truly frightening thing is that crime is almost certainly going to get even worse as economic conditions continue to deteriorate.
The following are ten facts about crime in the United States that will blow your mind....
#1) The city of Detroit, Michigan literally looks like a war zone and violent crime is thriving. So far this year in Detroit, car thefts are up 83%, robberies are up 50%, burglaries are up 20% and property destruction is up 42%.
#2) Lawmakers in Illinois say that violence has become so rampant in Chicago that the National Guard needs to be sent in. In just one night last week seven people were killed and 18 were wounded - mostly by gunfire. In fact, there have already been 113 murders in Chicago this year.
#3) The city of Phoenix, Arizona has become the car theft capital of the world as millions of illegal aliens who can't get work have found that stealing cars can be very profitable indeed.
#4) There are approximately 12 million crimes committed in the United States every single year. That is by far the worst in the world. No other nation has more than about 6 million reported crimes per year.
#5) In New York City, the number of homicides in the first quarter of the year had shot up by approximately 22 percent compared with 2009.
#6) U.S. prisons are already bursting at the seams. As you read this, there are over 2.2 million people in prison in the United States. In fact, America leads the world in the number of prisoners and in the percentage of the population in prison. The United States has 5% of the world's population, but 25% of the world's incarcerated population.
#7) U.S. law enforcement authorities claim that there are now over 1 million members of criminal gangs inside the country. These 1 million gang members are responsible for up to 80% of the crimes committed in the United States each year.
#8) There are over 100,000 rapes in the United States every single year. That is the highest number for any of the countries in the United Nations.
#9) According to USA Today, 58% of state and local law enforcement agencies in the United States reported that violent criminal gangs were active in their areas in 2008. That was up from 45% in 2004.
#10) Every year, one out of every five people is a victim of a crime in the United States. No other nation on earth has a rate that is higher.

Startling statistics but painfully true. I would suggest that we have prayer meetings to ask for God’s intervention and deliverance but would find it very difficult to locate a church in the US where God was welcome. We have lots of Osteen-ites that think we can just “invite Jesus into our hearts” for a guaranteed ticket to heaven and then refuse to acknowledge that there is anything called “sin” and that Jesus is the only hope of salvation. We have taught our children this same nonsense with values clarification. With the public school teaching of values clarification and the Osteen-ism teaching that “there aint no such thing as sin”, why are we even calling these things “crimes” and why are we locking any one up?
I live in Detroit and since our 4 children have moved to other states, no one is at home for stretches of the day. We have had three break-ins in the last two years, and at least one other attempt 3 years ago when my wife came upstairs to find a kid had broken a small window by the front door and was reaching in to try to open it. It has cost us more in security costs than actual loss, but we are concerned…What the mind-blowing stats don’t tell you nis that you are much more likely to be victimized, especially for violent crime, by people you know, especially family members. This is the fruit of family neglect, verbal abuse, drunkeness, addiction, and enabling. People tolerate a family member who uses drugs out of “love” and get victimized, not willing to apply the tough love.
By far the best way to stay safe is to always keep a safe distance from individuals who:
1. Own a lethal weapon.
2. Use drugs recreationally or habitually.
3. Abuse alcohol
or
4. Have at any time displayed a violent temper.
Do not engage any of these people in conversation, and when approaching strangers, be conscious that some of them may be as described above, so tread cautiously.
It is also worthwhile to learn self-defense martial arts such as Krav Maga, Kung Fu, or Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Welcome to the dumbing down and deliberate distraction of society that has been partly deliberate and partly out of malaise by people who are supposed to be ADULTS and PARENTS at the same time.
We have babies having babies, dilapidated schools that teach anything but KNOWLEDGE, and churches at every corner packed with naive (desperate?) souls who are too afraid to control their own destinies.
To top it off, you have a CORRUPT government that:
* panders to oligarchs by reversing the ideals of Jefferson, Washington, Franklin, Eisenhower and other great American PATRIOTS.
* wages wars around the world in the name of the almighty (er worthle$$ dollar)
* spends like it’s the end of the world — especially it’s Military budget
* etc.
I could go on…but I think u get the picture. BTW, I don’t even go to the US to visit my family.
What does Joel Osteen have to do with this article, Greg?
I’ll tell you: Nothing. You just wanted to preach hate and used
griping about Osteen to do it.
Furthermore, I am a minister’s wife, and I really like Osteen.
At least he can preach love; all YOU are doing is passing along
hate. Shame on you.
Osteen is amazing; it is your mind that needs changing my dear.
Romans 12:2: Be ye transformed by the renewal of your mind.
Greg, you sound so brainwashed, its sad. Really sad.
Brainwashed, and inappropriately angry at things that “conveniently” make some sort of sick sense to you.
Interesting point, Ari. Many of these recreational drug users seem harmless. It’s easy to say: “Oh, he’s just a pothead.” But many of these people, not all, are members of the Entitlement Generation. They may seem harmless, slacking on the couch and collecting their welfare checks, but what happens when the checks stop coming and the social safety net collapses?
Linda,
Perhaps you have been deceived by the sweet talking salesman.
Joel Osteen’s teaching are nothing short of sweet bread for the pew sitters. He admits that he does not want to talk about anything negative. Sin, Hell, God’s wrath onto the unbelievers at the end time are not part of his vocabulary. He admits that he just wants people to feel good and to feel good about themselves. The sad part of this is that he then should have become a counselor not a preacher.

Linda – this has everything to do with the destruction of Christian faith in this nation. Osteen is no more Christian than Michael Jackson, yet he has convinced false believers like you that there is something good in his denial of Biblical truth. It always puzzles me why misguided fools attack people as being “hateful” when the truth is spoken. The only thing that I hate is the fact that so many people who claim to believe in Jesus Christ – like you – have been deceived and led down the path to hell by false preachers like Osteen. However, I would love to see you and other lost souls repent and be saved.
I find it funny that People of the United States (Who like to refer to themselves as ” Americans” ) keep referring to their country as home of the free and land of the brave, especially after statistics like these…. sucks to be you
I have been saying for years that crime rates in this country were going to escalate. Anti-social behavior has been slowly increasing over the last couple of decades. We have raised several generations with a strong sense of entitlement. When I say entitlements I do not mean social security or medicare. I am talking about how if a man works his whole life and earns material possesions everyone around him wants what he has and if he refuses to sell or give away his stuff, people will just take it and that is why crime is growing.
First, the last couple of generations, people between the agaes of 1 and 50-years-old, have had it so easy due to the abundance that our society has generated in the last fifty years has turned them into sel-absorbed and serving, mean, egotistical maniacs that will do anything, including force against others, to gain what they want. Secondly, our police forces have been formatted to generate money for the prison-industrial-complex, they let crimes slide or go on(unless you are not a criminal). This has created a sense of invulnerability among the citizens, one which causes people to scoff at the law and ultimately believe that they can do what they want and get away with it.
first off if parents would teach their children what it means to earn what you get we would not be in this predicament. secondly not everyone between the ages of 1- 50 were just handed things on a silver platter some of us were taught that we had to earn what we have and have done so for most of our lives. have you ever stepped into a prison? they are over populated because some people did not take the time to instill respect into their kids as they expect the government to hand them a check every month. take a walk through a small community called covert, Michigan. it is one of the richest communities in the area and yet no one does anything to take care of what it looks like because they expect the government to take care of it. the houses are dilapidated and broken down yet they spend money on designer brand name clothes so that they look rich. that is the way it is across america. IT IS NOT EVERYONE between 1 – 50.
The Detroit statistics are a misrepresentation of the situation. Those stats are for the downtown area only, which is a small area of the City of Detroit. It would be similar to saying that 90% of the people in New York are criminals, where as the area that the statistics were taken from was a prison in New York. It is not a fact!
Lies, damned lies, and statistics…
AKA BS
So what now folks
“Things can only get better” – while we rich folk avoid the street and drive from safe zone to safe zone crime will prosper.
This “article” is absurdly biased and commits the fallacy of significance. You cannot claim that a single statistic is significant without comparison statistics. For example, what’s wrong with “fact 4″?
“There are approximately 12 million crimes committed in the United States every single year. That is by far the worst in the world. No other nation has more than about 6 million reported crimes per year.”
First of all, the US is the 3rd largest country in the world. 12 million crimes in Peru e.g., would be unbelievably high, but they contain only a fraction of the US population – the comparison in population: 28 million vs 307 million.
Second, the US law enforcement is (in general) significantly more advanced and the law more strictly upheld than most countries in the world. Therefore, the US tends to incarcerate far more people for more minor legal offenses.
Third, the author claims that “no other nation has more than 6 million reported crimes per year”. The key word is “reported”. The US crime report rate is fairly accurate, and most crimes are reported immediately and recorded quite efficiently. Compare this to a third world country where the majority of crimes are never reported, and even less often solved.
Also, 1/3 of the prisoners in the US are illegal immigrants, who, instead of being deported, are held at US taxpayers expense in order to stop them from continuing their life of crime in their native country, and from reentering the US illegally in the future.
Also, statistics provided in the article show significant crime increases in 2009, yet makes no long term comparison. The author conveniently fails to report that crime in the US had actually dropped significantly since the early 1990s. In New York, by 2008, the crime rate had dropped to its lowest point since the great depression. In relation to 2008, perhaps crime had increased, but compared to 1990, crime is still remarkably lower.
The author’s points are out of context and show very little academic proficiency. The article is full of one sided statements and irrelevant assumptions.
The following TIME article discusses the reality of crime in the US: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1963761,00.html.
I hope i don’t sound uneducated, but couldn’t this mean we just have more crimes reported opposed to committed? Americas is nowhere near perfect, but these facts could just mean more people are able to report their crimes or be caught than commit them.
true haha
I mean absolutely no disrespect but some of these “facts” simply are not true, or exaggerated. We are lucky to live in the United States. Yes, crime rates may be rising but they have not even come close to reaching those of other nations. For example, The Democratic Republic of the Congo. More than 1,000 women are raped every day in The DRC. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/400000-rapes-in-congo-in-one-year-2283102.html
http://www.raisehopeforcongo.org/sites/default/files/10reasons%281%29.pdf
Another example is Burma (Myanmar).

Yes, as American citizens we should be concerned about problems within our own nation, but we need to be realistic about what the problems are. I live in New Orleans, one of the “most dangerous” cities and our nation, and I have seen the crime and poverty we face; But it is nothing compared to other nations.
in the U.S. are taught from the cradle to TV violence, perversions. So many movies about zombies from the end of the world, and always remains only a few survivors). That is, the authorities deliberately instil fear, for this even svvoi tower undermined, for the U.S. intelligence services created and financed by al-Qaeda – to carry out acts of terrorism and subversive activities in Muslim countries. All U.S. war – this is shameful and dirty swamp – invent an enemy, then fed decades of military-industrial complex. And the citizens – just hamsters – they are told the media – and to believe
But the president is engaged in important work – it protects homosexuals))
From the above responses, I realize that most Americans dont know at all what ‘poverty’ is and that peoples of poorer countries live in far worse conditions than anything close to the ‘recession in the US’. Linda here is right – you are simply lucky that you were born in America. So instead of bickering about religion and stuff, just plant your feet on the ground and use your common sense ~ your God given brain! When you read about facts, you try and understand them – don’t take a tangent and talk about everything else but the topic. Stupid people.
America is becoming a melting pot of the entire world. This country did not come from any one race or religion. This is a “Christian nation” in the mainstream sense of the word. Meaning you believe in “God” and are a relatively good person. But the fact is there is a True God who is over and above all the theoretical “gods” out there, and He is just, and truthful, and loving. God will soon be active (although from the earthquakes, tornadoes, and solar storms, it seems He has started His terrible work) but how is destruction a loving thing? Well sin is also a reality and God wants to put an end to both sin and those who cling to it. Osteen and other modern evangelist preachers do not tell you about the justice and vengeance side of God, no sin, no devil, nothing to be worried about. It is a lie, they are False Prophets. God will soon be active, both in calling people out of this New Age Babylon America, and by serving heavy judgments on those who continue in their godless indifference. There is so much evil in the accepted religions of today that God wants to destroy them (Catholicism, False Protestantism, and Luciferianism/Satanism)
Awake because the American dream will truly turn into the American nightmare! Jesus offers you a new life in exchange for your sinful existence, He gives you the opportunity to be pure like Himself. Jesus occupy our hearts!
thats wrill don i wouldnt want to do such thing like that i wouldnt want to steal thing because i wouldnt want to be called a stealer i like to be call my name ok i dont care if you were in the desert and you had to still some thing to surve dont do dom things ok.
how about instead of putting down our country for the crime rate why don’t we look at the reasons for the crime rate? seriously how many of the gang bangers grew up with out a dad? or watched someone hurt their family? why don’t we deal with the real problems instead of looking at the statistics. if we taught our kids respect for human life and did not make somethings so “bad” then there would be no reason for there to be any crime to get the mysterious “bad” stuff. firearms are not mysterious they are a tool. drugs are not mysterious they are a way to calm down and relax so why don’t we make a safe environment for the people that need to use it for medical purposes (example MICHIGAN) so that it is not a danger to anyone else. people wake up and look at what we have done to our kids. the 60′s was all about flower power and feeling good and peace so why have the 60′s children made it so wrong for the next generations to do the same thing that they did? is this a free country or a bunch of hypocrites?
